Middle Farm - Lewes

Firle, Lewes, East Sussex BN8 6LJ

10-08-2008

The Cider collection at Middle Farm is unrivalled - pop down and try the widest selection of cider I’ve ever seen. Once you’ve found your favourite select a container and fill it up!

As well as the Cider, there is a great farm shop, with butchers, bakery and delicatessan selling local cheeses.

If you visit with your children a tour of the farm is fantastic - just to see the variety of chickens, play in the hay barn or the outdoor play area - be sure to take a camera.

You could also buy a picnic from the farm shop and eat it on site or at the nearby reservoir which has ample picnic benches and as very peaceful.

There is no charge for entry to Middle Farm, apart from the Open Farm where tickets are £3.00 per head. There is no charge for children under 3. Season tickets also available at a cost £25 per person or child.

Ample free parking, and the car park and farm shop buildings are all within easy walking distance of each other, with good access facilities for the elderly and disabled.

If Cider isn’t your thing - pop down the A27 to Alfriston and the English Wine Centre.

English Wine Centre - Brighton

A27, Alfriston, Brighton BN26 5QS

10-08-2008

I love this place so much that we’re holding our wedding reception in their barn.

Pop by to try the best selection of English Wines - you can take a tour and arrange a tasting session complete with a light lunch of regional cheeses, homemade soda bread, local sausages, mixed salads and hot new potatoes served with a glass of wine, cider or organic apple juice. for approx £27.50 per person

You can also get wine personalised.

The owners of the centre are absolutley love.
They also have a beautiful self catering cottage for hire.

The centre is located between Brighton and Eastbourne on the A27 and is located close to the beautiful village of Alfriston, the very child friendly Drusillas Park and Middle Farm - home to the national collection of cider.

You can’t go wrong with a bottle of English white - try to the Ortega!

Ample parking as well!

We took 4 French cousins here and they loved the wine - says it all really!

Prangsta Costumiers - New Cross

304 New Cross Road, London SE14 6AF

10-08-2008

Wow heaven - if you are looking for a fantastic costume made by a true professional Costumier then stop by Prangsta and visit Mel.

This isn’t cheap and cheerful, don’t bother if you want a space man or Darth Vadar suit, this is the real thing. View the website to get a great idea of what you’re aiming for.

If you fancy learning to sew then ask them about their excellent classes that Mel hosts in her workshop in Deptford - great value for money and you can learn the basics upwards.

The talent from the team here is unrivalled and you will not be disappointed if you commission a piece from them and most of the materials the team use are recylced fabrics.

I’m a fan and a one of her students - never picked up a sewing needle in my life but have a fully boned corset, and two dresses to show for the classes over 6 months.

Deptford Market - Deptford

Deptford High St, Deptford, London SE8 3DR

10-08-2008

Deptford market is the place to find a bargain on a Saturday or Wednesday.

As well as the shops lining the high street you get a plethora of fruit and veg folk selling their wares - my favourite is the Pound a bowl man on the corner near Barclays - you’ll get all the weird and wonderful veg as well as your normal apples and pears and it is great quality.

Looking for herbs and spices then check out the green gorcers for 5 bunches of coriander for £1 if you are lucky, fresh spinach and bags of scotch peppers.

If you are lucky you’ll pick up a high street bargain as well - spent winter in a Monsoon coat - £20 and Summer in a jacket from Red Herring - £10 - all new!

Move further up the high street and on a Wednesday you can find the man with magazines - many top titles for sale at bargain prices.

I shop here every week and always enjoy the experience and the great value for money - forget a large supermarket for your fruit and veg!

Cubana - Waterloo

Book in advance, we held a 50th Birthday party here for 15 people, the quality of the food was superb with all of us eating together and without feeling rushed but it was clear that you didn’t have a chance of getting in without a reservation.

Main courses range from about £6.00, i tried the Garbanzos Grillios with Chirozo - this was a chickpea stew with garlic and coriander and simply oozed flavour.

The cocktails were fresh and very, very tasty (from what we can remember), especially those with lashings of fresh crushed mint leaves - buy the pitchers they work out better value.

After dinner the restaurant becomes part of the bar with live music.

Well worth staying around for after you’ve eaten.

One tip - wear as little as possible this place gets very, very warm.

Tai Won Mein - Charlton

39 Greenwich Church Street, Greenwich, London SE10 9BL

03-08-2008

I love this place. After a hard days work in the docklands and the walk through the Greenwich tunnel you can park your behind on a communal bench in Tai Won Mein and feast on a huge plate of noodles for less than a fiver.

Don’t expect all the trimmings but two of you can eat here for less than a tenner - the portions are huge, try getting one starter and one main and sharing - you will not go hungry.

This is a simple place, so take note - cash only and no bar licence but worth it for fast, delicious food and it is close the bus stops, DLR and ferry.

San Miguel - Greenwich

18 Greenwich Church Street, Greenwich, London SE10 9BJ

03-08-2008

Fantastic range of tapas that suits all tastes.

We ate here with a died in the wool carnivore who devoured the flaming chirozo and a vegan who certainly didn’t go hungry.

You can also have more traditional meals or hearty paella.

Reasonable prices but not the cheapest - exactly as you would expect in the tourist trap that is Greenwich.

Book a table at the weekend if you want to eat between 6 - 8pm but you can get a walk in after 8ish and mid week you generally are pretty safe to just pop in.

Bill includes a 10% service charge - the waiting staff don’t get a share and they work really hard so if you want them to have a tip get it taken off the bill and give it to them directly.

2 Sisters Tandoori - Peckham

4 Gibbon Road, Nunhead, London SE15 2AS

02-06-2008

Now, i have been promised a great Indian takeaway before and been gutted to receive an oily carton with reconstituted chicken. Not here - top quailty ingredients where the pictures on the menu really do reflect the finished product. The menu is so varied and you get the chance to try dishes only really found in a restaurant rather than a takeaway menu, for example the fantastic Achari Chicken and Shatcora Gosth. To top it all off the price range is great with a set menu with all the trimmings for two at £20 and most mains with chicken around £4.30 with prices rising if you want the King Prawn option.

Be sure to book early at peak times as they are so popular you can expect around an hours wait but it is worth it!

OXO Tower Restaurant Bar & Brasserie - South Bank

Barge Ho Street, Oxo Tower Wharf - South Bank, London SE1 9PH

30-05-2008 (updated on 02-06-2008)

I wanted a great first meal after 6 months on a really boring diet. Booked in advance for a great table with a view for 8 friends. Every single one of was in a state of bliss, the portions looked tiny on huge plates but each bit was so full of flavour you didn’t want to over do it!

Lunch is a great time to go, expect a limited menu for larger groups but the price is incredibly reasonable for the quality and service - felt very Sex in the City! £40 a head 3 course and coffee.
