The Porterhouse - Bournemouth
113 Poole Road Westbourne, Bournemouth BH4 9BG
13-04-2012
Great pub this one, especially if you enjoy a pint of real ale. They have the usul fare on lagers but the have a good selection of hand drawen real ales from the Ringwood Brewery, names like Old Thumper and 49’er both delicious and more than capable of reducing me to a mewling kitten the following morning!!!! Go easy on these two!
The pub is not huge but can attract some of the more interesting people from the area and by that I mean interesting, this is a great place for a conversation with a stranger.
Never miss the chance to visit here whenever we are out in Westbourne.
St Peters Church - Poole
Church Road, Poole BH14 0NN
13-04-2012
If you are an advocate of High Anglican Worship then you will enjoy the services at St Peters, there is a Eucharistic service eveyday and Evensong on Sundays at 6.30pm.
The main service on Sunday starts at 10am and will last approx’ 1 hour followed by coffee/tea and biscuits.
I have worshipped here for some 5-6 years now and have made some true friends, the Church is very welcoming and allows newcomers to join in as much as they wish be that standing on the edges and watching or jumping in with both feet. Either way you are accepted as you are.
The choir is a beauty to the ears and I can say on occasion I have been near tears, nothing to do with the fact my kids are part of it, honest!!!
St Peters is not a gospel/clappy Church but the more traditional style of worship but we do try to be there for families and couples as well as those who come on there own and just hope you will come back again.
The Church itself is stunning, the first time I walked in I was amazed at the size of the place and how was it that having lived in Poole for more years than I wish to mention I had not been there or really noticed it before.
Try it, you may just be surprised.
Mr Kyps - Poole
8a Parr Street, Poole BH14 0JY
13-04-2012
Hi, Kyps is a brilliant night out, where else can you get such varied live music with tickets at the £10 mark, the beer is cheap too, especially compared to the pubs close by.
The music is normally V LOUD but all part of a good night to me but even I on occasion have resorted to the foam ear plugs just to take the ring out of the next days hearing lol.
If you wanna dance there is a dance floor at the front, not huge but big enough, the rest of the place is carpeted but that can sometimes be sticky due to loads of beer glasses being balanced whilst head banging!!
All in all a brilliant little secret in the heart of Ashley Cross. As for a previous comment on dodgy parking, I have left the car on loads of accasions and never had a problem, the hardest part is finding a space so get there early or cab it.
Filippo's - Poole
222 Ashley Road, Poole BH14 9BY
13-04-2012
My wife and I have been visiting Filipo’s since before we were married and that is plenty of years ago! We love this place, the boss is just the same as he was when we first went there, nothing changes, the decor does, a little!, the menu is pretty much the same and the music, which tends to be loud!!! It is the place food damn good Italian food, cooked the old way, so Filipo tells me.
It is nice to go to a restaurant where you kinda know what you are going to get and know that it will be good and the boss is going to welcome you in whther he knows you or not. Let them know there is a reason, birthday, anniversary etc, in fact we have seen just about every concievable reason for going out celebrated over the years, and following Filipo getting eveyones attention with the aid of a cow bell, the victim or should I say lucky person will have the entire place sing happy birthday, or whatever suits the occasion, which will then be followed up by a free Flamin’ Zambucca.
I have suffered/enjoyed this many times and look to have a few more! If you are after a quiet night look elsewhere but if it is a fun night with good food and drinkable house wine, Filipos is the place to go.
BowlPlex - Branksome
382 Poole Rd, Branksome, Poole BH12 1DA
13-04-2012
Hiya, this place is a good fun place for the kids, doesnt look much from the front but inside is great. 24 lanes for bowling so unless it is really busy (when raining) you dont wait long for a lane. The food is exactly what you would expect for a bowling alley, warm and filling, nuff said.
This place is very good for the start of a night out as the bar is close to the lanes and the music can be loud but usually it is good enough to get you in the mood.
I will always rate this place over the Tower Park venue as parking is nearly always easier and if you don’t drive the bus stops are right outside the door, this is on a main bus route for Poole/Bournemouth so you won’t be waiting long.
Only recent downside is that they shut the Woodman pub next door and havent as yet opened it up again, the nearest pubs to here are te Railway (!!) at branksome or a short bus trip or a level 10 minute walk to Westbourne. Plenty of good food and beer there :-)
