The Carr Mill offers a man vs food extreme challenge, which is not for the faint hearted. For just £9.99 you can try to conquer the flaming burger challenge which consists of two 12oz burgers, two breaded chicken fillets, crispy bacon, chilli, cheese, chips and onion rings ( a 1kg burger) Eat it all in 15 minutes and you can achieve a photograph of yourself on the wall of power. I tried …. and failed.

The crown is a remote pub which is well known for it’s exceptional food as well as it’s excellent real ale selections. The surroundings are warm and cosy and the staff provide a service with a smile. The butchers block is a must. With a choice of fillet, sirloin, rump or rib eye you won’t be disappointed as the beef comes from locally reared cows and with the scales on hand you can have as much or as little as your heart desires. Choose how you want your steak cooked (pan fried or flame grilled, rare, medium, well done) then choose your side orders. I highly recommend going on a Tuesday night though as the butchers block is half price and the price makes a big difference, especially if your in a large party of people, but make sure you book as you could be left drooling. All in all the best steak I’ve ever had … if you can find it!
Birchalls - St. Helens

Birchalls is a family owned pork butchers in the heart of the town centre. Every morning you’ll be amazed as the queues gather outside, with Tupperware boxes in hand, patiently waiting to get their hands on the finest pork pies in the country. However this is the only downfall. With such high demand comes great disappointment somedays, as you can be left empty handed, especially if you arrive after dinner time. If you are lucky enough though to sample one of these glorious creations, be sure to eat the pie correctly. Make a small hole in the crust of the pie and drink the luscious salty juices before biting into it. This WILL prevent scalding of the chin which is a common error to all birchall newcomers.
Exsthelener I recently went down for a stroll down memory lane in St Helens and called in at Burchalls for a pork pie. It was late lunch and the lady serving me said that there was only one pie left. I told her I only wanted one and she then advised me that it was broken… but could have it for 50p. This pie tasted even better than they did in the 1960s.

One word … Perfection.
Ladyj July 2011 this pub was good but owner amanda put it up for sale but it never sold so she left and has really gone down hill its just like any other housing estate pub now. a year and half can see a big change in a bar shame but local pubs like this are often built up around the person running it and when they go it falls into decline Avoid in 2013

Excellent kebab counter. Donner, chicken, chicken tikka, HOT chilli sauce, garlic Mayo, one of the best around.
knibbd Nice one – I must try it some time. It looks as though the map marker is more than a little out!
Go onto “edit this information” and one of the choices is “move map marker”.

This has gotta be the most famous bistro in the town centre for several reasons. 1) it’s been going since my dad was a lad 2) It’s like stepping back into the 1970’s when you walk in there. Wood chip Walls, dusty ornaments and jubilee photographs 3) they still provide you with salted peanuts and ready salted crisps whilst you sit in the bar and order your food 4) other than that the food is your standard traditional British grub. Roast dinners and gammon and pineapple etc, it’s not the best meal you’ll ever have but it’s bad. It’s just more of a St.Helens institution now but the town wouldn’t be the same without the charcoal grill. Everyone should go at least once. Just for the nostalgia of it all.

One of my favourite places to go for a meal. The baileys creme brûlée is out of this world. It’s worth going just to try that. Great service, friendly staff, great food at a great price. Well worth a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Quick, efficient and reasonably priced. New & part worn tyres are available as well as tracking tests which are free if your tracking is ok. Recommended.
