How to find an adequate superlative for the Kitchin... the amount of awards Tom Kitchin has won over the past year does it all to be honest - youngest Scottish chef to ever win a Michelin star, Scottish chef of the year, restaurant of the year... all after being open for a mere few months. The word exceptional springs to mind.
Their tag-line is "From Nature to Plate", and my, in what fashion does it get there!
for instance, if you were to go for a starter, there's "seared hand dived Orkney scallops, served with endive tarte tatin and sweet Chateau de levant syrup". Everything seems to be locally produced, from wild mallard from the Glenalmond Estate, to Roast apples "from Moira's garden". So its ethical too. If none of the hundreds of top critics who've ever reviewed the place can find a negative, how on earth do you expect me to?!
As far as i'm concerned, there's no better place to eat in Scotland, the UK or perhaps even the whole world. And they're so frustratingly young, Tom and Michaela, and have so much energy, it just seems unreal.
While the pricing might be a little above some restaurants, and you might have to book well in advance, take it from me - you won't be disappointed.

Calton Hill

Why oh why does Carlton hill hide in the shadow of Arthur's Seat fame-wise? I've never understood. For me, the views from up here are just spectacular - of the crags, of the firth, of the castle, of princes street, everywhere.
Whether you're coming up for a romantic evening in front of the setting sun, for the fireworks or for a crazy fire festival, this is pretty much the first place i'd take someone visiting Edinburgh.
The best part of it is that you only need about five/ten minutes to walk here from the very centre of town, then back down for a cosy drink in a warm bar - there're plenty around!

Studio 24

Studio 24 has, i hear, got a reputation for being the place to be if you're into you're heavy death grunge hard-core mash-up metal. But if that's not your sort of thing, don't rule it off your map just yet.
I've personally never been to one of those nights (its partly just the whole dressing up the same in order to be different thing that i don't quite get), but i've rarely been disappointed with the nights i have ended up going to here. I think the trick is just to make it the kind of club you come to because there's a certain night on, rather than for it in itself.
Having said that, after its fairly recent revamp (and change of management?) the place has got a slightly new vibe compared to the grimey-cool berlin feel that it used to have.
All in all, definitely worth checking what's on here if ever you're looking for a night out - various from almost one extreme to the other.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but for some reason Henderson's remninds me somewhat of an up-market, old-fashioned tea room/cantine.
Having said that, the food is good quality (if not superb) and its a great place to go for lunch, whether you're vegetarian, vegan or pagan. Keep a check on the wallet, though, cause there's a tendency to get pricey here...

Jazz Bar

Well, for a comprehensive review, there doesn't seem to be much i could ever add to the one below. I just wanted to give some third party support to the argument, and add an extra star - i can't see how this place could ever not get five.
If you want a decent evening out, but you're not sure where to go, you're unlikely to be disappointed if you head to the jazz bar. While it does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin (so i wouldn't come here if you want a cheesy night of pop and r'n'b), i've seen some incredibly unbelievable talents performing here.
The sort of people that could quite easily have recording contracts and deals, if only they had the money and the contacts. Its seriously good live music without the price you'd pay elsewhere.
