Fish In A Tie - Clapham

105 Falcon Road, Battersea, London SW11 2PF

20-01-2010

Oh my Gosh! I can't believe that I don't go here more often. It's well worth the trek across London for. The choux de crab is fantastic, and even better, it's on the lunch menu, which is only £5 for two courses - Starbucks can shove it's luke-warm panini (o?) where the sun does not shine!
The original decor is cosy and kitsch, and a table for two tucked in the corner is an ideal place for a romantic dinner.
The staff are attentive, but not overbearing... all in all, a jolly good time was had by all.
Yum yum, and thumbs up :)

Rush Hair Designers - Epsom

29 High Street, Epsom, Surrey KT19 8DD

28-04-2009

I’ve been to Rush three times now, and I’ve never been disappointed. The other reviews seem to find it quite expensive, but I don’t think it’s so much more than the other hair dressers out there, and certainly not a lot for the service you get!! Coffee in a cafetière in a hairdresser?! Magic!
The cuts themselves are always well executed, and even if they don’t look much better than you’d normally get, they last amazingly well. Which is good if you, like me, only get round to getting your hair cut twice a year!!

Veng Hour - Part-Dieu

ok food, ok atmosphere, but very expensive for the quantity you get!! Not overly impressed to be honest!

rouge tendance - Monplaisir

74 boulevard Jean XXIII, tram T2 jean XXIII maryse bastier, 69008 Lyon

An original idea of all you can eat stir fry, but i would council caution and just get one bowl (not the antelope, the kangaroo and prawns are much better) - you’ll still be full afterwards and won’t have paid for the privilege of feeling ill from eating too much!
A bit on the pricey side, and the waiters are a bit scary (they’ve obviously been told to say bon appetit to everyone they see with food, which means that you have it said to you about 6 times before reaching your table - a bit odd). The decor is pretty good (and the toilets are amazing) but definitely a to go with friends rather than for a romantic evening.

CHEZ GUILLEMETTE - Bellecour

11 Rue François Dauphin, 69002 Lyon

21-02-2009

This place is amazing and cheap. It’s run by a lovely woman who speaks really good English, but is a bit of a mentalist. Get there early enough to try the soup… it’s always amazing: made fresh everyday from the ingredients at the market that seem the nicest.
The sofas are so comfortable and the whole “lounge” experience is given a twist as you really do feel as though you are monging out in someone’s front room :)
Enjoy!

The Breakfast Club - Soho

33 D'Arblay Street, Soho, London W1F 8EU

A great place for any time of day, not just for breakfast! The eclectic decor, great food and location are just right for a either a mid-shop lunch for those who start early, or a meeting spot for those who don’t often see the morning!! And the fact tht it doesn’t do alcohol makes it the perfect get away spot for the morning after the night before for those of us for whom the hair of the dog is more hinderance than help!
Food is wholesome, filling, tasty and cheap (ie amazing!) and the service is always very friendly, if not always totally on the ball… I also have had to chase up drink orders in this joint!
A regular haunt wrapped up in pretty paper and tied with a bow. With bacon.

Cafe Sol Dos - Clapham

56 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7UL

A normal four-star restaurant, but my gosh, the blackened cajun tuna is a star in its own right! I have been here a few times, including for my last night before running off to france for 9 months. The food hasn’t disappointed me yet, and we got a discount for being a large group - we promptly put the money saved behind the bar for some extra tequila!
For those who like their cocktails extra stong, it’s probably not the best place to go (try the newly opened B@1), but for those who don’t stomach the taste of tequila particularly well, the extra sweetness helps them slide down just that little bit too easily!

La Perla - Covent Garden

28 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7JS

A place to check out - the yummiest fajitas I have tasted in London, served with the best refried beans, and make sure to leave enough room for the chocolate bownie. The service is good, friendly and quick, and they can normally find you a table pretty quickly, even if you don’t book. Don’t be put off if it looks rammed, that bar area at the front is normally pretty full, especially at the weekend: the restaurant is at the back, and reserved for diners only.
The also do a cheap lunch menu with drink included - winner!

Feng Shui Inn - Leicester Square

6 Gerrard Street, London W1D 5PG

This was my second favourtie chinese in China town, but with the lamentable passing of ChinaChina (so good they named it twice) I guess that this dark red, good value place has been bumped up a notch. I first came here when I was dating a BBC (that’s British-born Chinese, and nothing to do with the broadcaster) guy he recommended it as a place his dad (a chinese cook) said used good ingredients. I haven’t been disappointed when I’ve gone. The ingredients are indeed good, and cooked, if not to perfection, then to a high standard.
The decor is typically chinese, right down to the paw-waving cats, but the last time I went in I was surprised to find it decorated for halloween, which I don’t normally think of as a chinese festival!
The service is better by Western standards than a lot of similar places in China town, where they stick to their culture of “fast is better than friendly”; feng shui manages to strike the West-East balance almost perfectly.

The Tankard - Lambeth

111 Kennington Road, London SE11 6SF

19-02-2009

This place used to be a BRB, but was done up fairly recently. It’s really chilled out, pretty swanky-looking place that seems a bit at odds with its close proximity to E&C. Not that I’m complaining though, despite the lack of clientele (it’s always been pretty empty in there when I’ve been in) this place does good pizza (calzone is amazing) for pretty cheap. I am assured that the guinness is top quality and the gin comes in pretty generous measures.
The upstairs room is to hire for groups and private parties, and in summer they have a lovely roof terrace overlooking the War Museum gardens.
Spread the word!
