Gorgie Fish Bar - Edinburgh

136-138 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 2NS

11-05-2009

Stopped in here the other day as I was walking home and was utterly disappointed. I got the fish and chips - which had apparently been sitting under a heat lamp all day. The fish and chips didn’t seem to have been cooked well…both seemed very soggy and actually caused me to spend the rest of the evening curled on the couch with a trashcan nearby as a result of an awful stomachache. Hopefully this doesn’t happen often…

Bodrum Express - Edinburgh

6 Parkhead Gardens, Sighthill, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 4SQ

Definitely the best Kebab I’ve had in Edinburgh - they are not afraid to pile on your choice of meat (even cooked to your liking if you ask) and toppings. The pitas are also pockets so you can even eat it without a fork if you don’t get too many toppings!

Prices are the most reasonable I’ve seen in Edinburgh - for a fiver you get a large doner kebab, fries, and a drink. Although I haven’t tried most of the things on the menu - everything has looked delicious and I will be trying other things soon!

Black Medicine Coffee Company - Edinburgh

108 Marchmont Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH9 1BG

Honestly, after all the reviews that I read I had so much more in store for this shop. Don’t get me wrong - the selection of pastries, sandwiches, and all was pretty good and they did a great job making them. But this is a coffee shop…and they don’t serve coffee. Now true, they do serve “Americano” but for any person trying to find a good cup of coffee, this simply won’t do and for that I refuse to give this place any higher than 3 stars - it’s almost like false advertising! Anyways, the atmosphere was very studenty and laid back, but I don’t think I’d come here to read a book - it was very noisy at times. All in all, I’d highly recommend Elephants & Bagels just down the street - better bagels and proper filter coffee.

Biddy Mulligans - Edinburgh

94-96 Grassmarket, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2JR

07-03-2009

Biddy Mulligans gets pretty crowded on weekend nights with students and adults a like. There is typically sport on TV that draws in fans of all ages and keeps the bar extremely lively. Students enjoy drinks for 2 quid - but you have to tell them you’re a student and show ID or they’ll charge you the normal price every time. There are a ton of Stag and Hen parties that take place here which can be a good or bad thing dependent on how belligerent they are.

The only true negative thing I have against Biddy’s itself is the barstaff. They tend to be pretty slow, just hang out and not serve, or skip over people that have been waiting the longest. The other ups and downs I can’t really hold against Biddy’s - but I can say I’ve had a fun time everytime I’ve visited.

Shanghai - Edinburgh

16 George Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2PF

23-02-2009

Apparently I entered Shanghai on a night drastically different from the nights the previous comments defined.

I found Shanghai to be one of the worse clubs I have been to in Edinburgh. I got there after pre-gaming at some other bars around Edinburgh and was definitely feeling good and excited for the hype of Shanghai. I walked in to found myself hit with an exorbitant entrance fee - after convincing myself that it was worth it I walked in to find the place absolutely packed. It was incredibly difficult to move about and the dancing was less “dancing” and more trying to stand straight as belligerent drunks continued to fall over throughout the night. The place was in awful condition - people dropped their drinks as they finished them leading to a humongous collection of broken glass and ice cubes on the floor making it dangerous.

I will admit the bartending was quick but found that they were poorly prepared - the were out of several drinks before I finally ordered one that they had and then found that to be extremely more expensive than drinks around Edinburgh (compounded with the entrance fee I was not happy).

Music was good - but it seemed to repeat certain songs several times. Over the course of the 2 hours that I was there I believe I heard two separate songs three times each - either they have a lot of turnaround in the club or people really, really like those songs. By 2:00am it seemed that it was about 75% guys in the club and that the remaining girls were making frequent trips to the bathroom to purge the one-to-many drinks.

Overall I don’t see myself coming back here ANYTIME soon unless they’ve got a night with some good deals and there’s less belligerence. Several better places to go in Edinburgh - check those out first.

Kebab Express - Edinburgh

252 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 2PL

12-02-2009

This was actually where I got my first meal after arriving in Edinburgh - it was the first place (besides McDonald’s ugh) that I found to be open. They also deliver for quite reasonable prices.

Food was really good and they will grill right before you and adjust the food to your liking - instead of one generic “one meal serves all” sort of approach that some places seem to take. Prices are fairly average for the city of Edinburgh - although I haven’t had one yet, the pizzas looked pretty cheap for how good they looked.

Would definately advise stopping by this Kebab shop if you’re in the area - however beware that there’s virtually nowhere to eat inside so best to plan on takeout.

The Mercat Bar - Edinburgh

28 West Maitland Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH12 5DX

12-02-2009

Absolutely terrific bar! Technically called a “Gastropub” I can see why they make the distinction - I’ve gotten a few meals here and they are among the best that I’ve had in all of Edinburgh. Meals are very reasonably priced and portion sizes are more than adequate

There’s a fair selection of draft beers - typical Tennent’s, etc as well as a few other beers that are less common. All prices are average for Edinburgh.

Staff is absolutely terrific. They are very friendly and when the bar is a little bit slow they spend a lot of time getting to know the patrons and swapping stories - great fun!

Atmosphere is great - really nice reclining area downstairs in the basement that shows American Football games - no better way to spend a Sunday evening. Highly recommend this pub!

Stereo - Edinburgh

28 Kings Stab Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2JY

11-02-2009

I originally came to Stereo after hearing about the infamous “ShagTag” night and promises of students and cheap drinks, boy was I disappointed.

The bouncers collect your money well outside the doors so you have little chance to see into the club before you enter, so we entered unaware that there was absolutely nobody there - perhaps 10 people total and only 2 girls. It did get busier as the night went on, but it was mostly obnoxious drunks that couldn’t get out of their own way. For the most part it was everybody dancing with the groups they came in with and very little mixing - we couldn’t even find the Shagtag boxes!

The actual club was unimpressive - we were going to play pool downstairs when we were waiting for it to hopefully pick up but found the pool tables to be the half-sized pool tables that just aren’t that fun to play on. The bars and dance floors were covered in fake smoke which was unappreciated, and everything was sticky from spilled drinks (again, this was also the case when there were only 10 people there).

The bar tending staff were incompetent at best. I had been drinking Fosters (one of the student deals) and when I went for my second beer I was told that they were all out (again only 10 people here at this point…) and there was no offer of a similarly priced drink, discount, anything and instead I got ripped off on a Corona which they couldn’t even compliment with a lime and ruined with a lime-flavored something-or-other. Later in the night one my mates came back to the table with a Foster’s - apparently they weren’t out and they refused to make any concessions for their poor bar tending earlier in the night.

All in all it was several pounds that I essentially wasted and do not intend on going back anytime soon. The most fun part of the night was leaving the club.

PizzaExpress - Aberdeen

402-404 Union Street, Aberdeen, Scotland AB10 1TQ

11-02-2009

As a traveling American I have been looking for a decent pizza since I have been in the UK. Pizza Express had the promising look of a local pizza joint, but after entering it to be very dressy and “high-life” which I was not prepared for.

The pizza was nothing exceptional - I ordered an American Hot which was not spicy at all and the pepperonis were some of the saddest attempts I’ve ever seen. The pizza was incredibly overpriced for the what I got. Despite the poor performance, the pizza is still better than Dominos, etc so don’t discount the pizza entirely.

Drinks were prohibitively expensive and drove me to drink water. Also, it was difficult to find any sort condiments - pepper, etc. Service was alright.

Elephants Bagels One - Edinburgh

37 Marshall Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9BJ

11-02-2009

Terrific little bagel & coffee shop right off a main line of bus routes, so relatively easy to get to. I’ve been searching Edinburgh for a good bagel and coffee shop and have finally found one that’s worth the weekly trek. The bagels are freshly made and absolutely delicious - much better than anything else I’ve had in the UK. There’s a variety of toppings for your bagels (including full bagel sandwiches) but I would definitely recommend a fruit bagel (blueberry, raisin, etc) with peanut butter - you can’t go wrong! The prices are fairly reasonable.

Atmosphere is great - you can come here to get a coffee and bagel to go, come to sit and chat with friends, or just come to enjoy a little time to yourself and read a book over coffee. The decor of the place is very unique with all the elephant pictures all over and has a nice, quaint feeling.

Staff are very friendly and willing to accommodate any requests you may have. Can get a little busy at time, but the line still moves fairly quickly.

All in all, if you are looking for a great bagel and coffee - definitely make this your next stop!
