The Tamar Valley Donkey Park - Gunnislake
St Ann's Chapel, Gunnislake, Cornwall PL18 9HW
11-08-2009
We’ve been to the donkey park today -against my better judgement - and it is the biggest regret of the summer holidays so far. It’s dirty, lots of the toys are broken (e.g. in the adventure playground), its expensive to get in, the cafe looks and smells greasy and grimey - need I go on? I know its all in a good cause but less time spent chatting (by the staff) and more time with a broom or a cloth would be time very well spent. If you are in this area - I recommend Cotehele as a wholeheartedly nicer destination.
National Trust: Glendurgan Garden - Falmouth
Mawnan Smith, Falmouth, Cornwall TR11 5JZ

A very beautiful and beautifully kept NT garden. Set in a valley so there are lots of hills to negotiate but the paths are beautifully made and the views are magnificient. There is a great maze for the children which they loved and a swing called a Giant’s Stride which is also lots of fun. Lots of nooks and crannys to explore. The garden runs down to the village/hamlet of Durgan and the beach which fronts a very busy piece of water - perfect for sitting and wathcing the world go by. Very nice tea room - reasonable prices - good cakes. Nice shop. Very helpful and informative staff. The toilet block is also worth mentioning - brand new, very clean and green. Enjoy!
Pentewan Sands - St. Austell

Absolutely fabulous position right on the beach. Flat, well cared for pitches. Clean and warm shower block with hot showers but no hairdryer. Staff in reception were a bit unhelpful suggesting we pitch on a roundabout first of all which was completely unnecessary as the park was only about 5% occupied. Once we’d found somewhere we preferred however there was no problem to change. Check out is 10.30 which is a little early but not unusual and they do offer the possibility of a late check out for £5. Have heard that it gets very, very busy and full of caravans in the busy season which may not be yours (or our) cup of tea but well worth a visit off-season if you can cope with the lower temperatures! Also have a heated pool (open in the summer) and a pub/restaurant and shop.
The Ship Inn - Noss Mayo
Plymouth PL8 1EW

This is a fabulous pub in a perfect setting on the water at Noss Mayo. Only 20 minutes from Plymouth yet a million miles away! Noss Mayo is a very tranquil village on the river a shortish walk from the coast path. The pub is full of charm in a shabby chic kind of way - made up of lots of smaller rooms, lots of wood, a library and a great outdoor patio area. Great coffees including the ubiquitous cappuccino (great after a walk along the coast path). Food is not a particular strong point but good for ham and chips or a sandwich and a bowl of chips and the atmosphere and setting more than make up for the mediocre food. Definitely worth a visit.
Ullacombe Farm Shop - Bovey Tracey
Ullacombe Farm, Haytor Road, Newton Abbot, Devon TQ13 9LL

This is a real gem of a place. A farm shop with adjoining cafe selling homemade cakes, breakfasts and lunches. The farm shop sells their own free range eggs, vegetables grown on the farm, jams and marmalades made in the shop, 'ready meals’ made in the restaurant as well as the more usual produce that is more widely available in farm shops across Devon. There is a great little comfy area for children with a sofa and toys - perfect for letting them play while the mummy’s enjoy a well deserved cuppa and a chat! The rest of the cafe is also very cosy and comfortable. A perfect stop after a wild walk on Haytor!

Have only been here for coffee and cakes but it’s a very nice, clean, bright cafe with plwnty of space. Great selection of cakes - there were about 8 or 9 different ones to choose from when we went there. Good coffee with the (now) usual range of cappuccinos and lattes etc. Youc an see through to the kitchen (which looks immaculate) and the staff were very busy preparing for lunch - must try it one day. Icing on the cake for my littel girl was that the waitress gave her a lollipop to go home with!
Market Garden - Tavistock
Unit 4 The Market, Tavistock, Devon PL19 0AL

An independent green grocer’s near to the Pannier market in Tavistock. Supplies a lot of the local cafes, pubs and restaurants. Has a good range of fruit and veg and tend to stock lots of locally sourced goods including daffodils from the Tamar valley which are always great value at a £1 a bunch and last for at least 10 days - one of the highlights of spring. Service is quick and friendly. Not as wide a range as Stokes on the main street but I think the quality is better and the prices more reasonable. Also more likely to find unusual things like purple cauliflowers here. Don’t tend to feature many 'end-of-day’ bargains or similar.
Cornish Arms - Tavistock
15 West Street, Tavistock, Devon PL19 8AN
31-01-2009
A very busy and bustling pub in the centre of Tavistock. At 38, you can sometimes feel like the oldest in there by several decades! Limited seating area - don’t expect to be able to sit down without a wait. Large outside smoking area. Also houses Monterey Jacks, a restaurant that serves tex-mex-style food that has a loyal local following. Great decoration in the restaurant - US-style road signs etc. Good for a quick pint after work or perhaps a quick pint after a curry at the Ganges. However, not recommended for a romantic drink or a drink to linger over (unless you are under 20!).
Blacksmiths Arms - Lamerton
Tavistock, Devon PL19 8QR
31-01-2009
A very nice, cosy pub in the village of Lamerton a few miles from Tavistock. Ample parking. Covered smoking area outside. Small outside area with children’s play equipment. Recommended for traditional pub food e.g mixed grill, gammon, steaks etc. Large pub area for eating also large dining restaurant area in an extension to the main building. Landlord very friendly and accommodating and the kitchens are good at dealing with large groups e.g christmas meals, work nights out. Beer is good too.
HSBC Bank - Tavistock
Bedford Square, Tavistock, Devon PL19 0AH
31-01-2009
A very friendly branch of the HSBC in the centre of Tavistock. Wheelchair/pushchair-friendly doors but the steps can be a challenge. Not open on Saturdays - otherwise reasonably convenient opening hours. Automated paying-in facilities inside and a cash-point outside. No nearby street parking but not far from the town centre car parks. Facilities for meeting with a branch manager if you need to - by appointment. Cash point facilities also available at the NatWest around the corner.
