A Shot In The Dark - Cardiff

12 City Road, Cardiff, Wales CF24 3DL

10-12-2012

A bit of a gem at the Newport Road end of City Road - unless you are a fan of Wetherspoons and early morning drinking then I can't think of anywhere else you'd rather go in this area.

Very laid back and relaxed, the hot chocolate is amazing and they've often got interesting things going on in the evening.

The Potted Pig - Cardiff

27, High Street, Cardiff, Wales CF101PU

06-12-2011

I first went to the Potted Pig a few months ago on a Friday night and was really impressed. Located in the old Lloyds bank vaults it’s very atmospheric. The walls are stripped bricks and there is a lovely wine cellar. Also, being able to choose from a vast number of gins has it’s benefits in enabling you to view everything with a warm, hazy glow!
The food is fab, apparently the belly pork is a wonder of the world. I had some chicken which was beautifully roasted – and the chargrilled squid was excellent. Service is great and I thought the bill was reasonable considering the quality of the food. We need more places like this in Cardiff!
Just to note, I went in recently for Sunday lunch and had to say I was a little disappointed. Only beef or belly pork and a veggie option to choose from – and the beef was pretty chewy. However, I’m willing to put this down to a poor cut of meat which can’t always be helped. The yorkshire, potatoes and vegs were cooked really well so it’s not a major complaint – however I think it’s more of an evening meal venue than a Sunday lunch location.

Simplicity Restaurant - Prenzlauer Berg

Possibly some of the best sushi and massaman curry i've had in ages. Absolutely loved the food here and it was fanstastic value for money.

They had an extensive sushi menu and then a limited menu of noodle dishes and some thai curries. Curries were about $6.50 each which i thought was amazing value for money. Sushi was also really reasonable and I'd recommend the ebi tempura maki - yum yum!

Service was a little slow but really polite and friendly. I think the slow service was more a sign of how fresh everything was. Some of the platters of sushi going out looked just incredible.

The picture that's been posted up here looks out of date, it's had a new sign out the front and was very modern and comfortable inside.

Esquina - Prenzlauer Berg

Danziger Str. 35, 10435 Berlin

22-03-2010

According to our guide book, Sunday brunch is an institution in Berlin - particularly the buffet kind.

Esquina is a 10/15 minute walk down Danziger Strausse from the tube station and on a Sunday offers a traditional buffet brunch from 10am - 3pm for $9.50.

Me and my friends thought the food was fab, lots of meats, cheeses, cannelloni, potatoes, salads, roast potatoes, meatballs in creamy sauces, cheesy veg - i could go on! So much food it's untrue. They also do desserts including what seemed to be a Berlin favourite - pancakes! Once you have been seated you can stay as long as you like up until 3pm.

Great value for money and a good way to while away a Sunday and ensure you won't need to eat again for hours. Also full of lots of locals so it has a really authentically German feel.

Dr. Pong - Prenzlauer Berg

Love it!

Ok, so for some people wandering into this bar might be a bit frightening - it looks and smells like a squat and is covered in graffiti and the toilets are NOT for the faint hearted - however it's brilliant fun!

One ping pong table takes pride of place and once you've paid your deposit for your bat you just join in the games where you all run around the table and take it in turns to take a shot. You miss and you are out. The final two competitors left aim to be the first to reach 10 points and therefore be crowned the winner. Easy!

Cheap beer and much fun to be had. I'd almost like it to remain our little secret please... please?

Veramente buona posizione in Prenzleberg.

Wirklich gute Lage in Prenzleberg, rundum fabelhaft!

This is a fantastic hostel - clean, stylish and friendly. Myself and 3 friends rented their 4-bed room with en-suite downstairs and it was a lovely room. Everything from the beds, bedding and furniture etc was in really good condition and fantastically clean.

The staff are all helpful and friend, particularly one member of staff whose name i didn't get who went on a full search to find us the bottle opener on our first night when we were desperate to get the wine open!

It was a bit noisy on the evening (I think because our room was downstairs near to the lounge) but didn't seem to carry on very late - not past 12pm so not really a problem and to be honest it's what I'd expect from a young hip hostel!

Fab coffees in the morning and we got 15 mins free internet when we bought them, also cheap beer in the evenings!

Really good location in Prenzleberg, all round fab!
