Shanghai International Circuit - Shanghai
Jiushi Tower 29/F, 28 Zhongshan Road (South), 200010 Shanghai
30-10-2008
I had visited the event last year and was also my first visit to an F1 race. As for the tracks, I was told that they didn’t meet international standards at first. :-P
The coaches were plentiful though I remember finding the coach stop took quite a long walk on departure.
For a big scale, large crowd event, it was very well organized.
Crewe Hall - Crewe

Great place for a traditional afternoon tea even if you don’t stay in the hotel. Great traditional setting! Selection of sandwiches, cakes, are served on a 3 tiered silverware.
Gourmet cafe - Shanghai
Shan Xi Lu 455, near BeiJing Lu, Jing An District, Shanghai

Great selection of burgers. I love the blue cheese burger! Their chips are also great! It’s pricier than Munchies for sure but you get what you pay for!
Nice smoothies also!
Nice and bright interior decor and makes an alternative to burger in a bar/pub.
Coolzey - Shanghai
Shanghai

There are 3 branches of Coolzey, but I don’t normally go to their cafes (the one near me is Shan Xi Lu is quite small). The best thing about coolzey is it’s great for lazy people like me. You can order on MSN and they remember your address for next time. Their pizza are the thin base and ingredients have always tasted fresh. Efficient, consistent with quality.
However, be warned when you order a large group delivery. It took them over an hour to deliver the goods (ok, it was for about 25 people without prior warning).
Highly recommended!!
Munchies - Shanghai

There are many burger joints here in Shanghai, but that are really quite pricey. Munchies is a small diner that’s sells burgers and some tex-mex items at a much more affordable price. 38rmb bought me a burger with coleslaw (or fries, potato salad, salad, etc) - so not bad at all considering most burgers in a western restaurant will cost 70rmb (not counting the McDonald’s or Burger King).
For sure you can get tastier burgers, but at that price, it’s not bad at all for here.
They also deliver within 1km distance. There goes the waistline…
O'Malleys Irish Pub - Shanghai
Tao Jiang Road 42, near Heng Shan Road, Shanghai

It does have traditional pub feel, with wooden interior and real fire, however, recent visits gave me impression that place is tired, and especially if you sit outside on the benches, feels like it’s some hall. It’s still a popular venue here in Shanghai in terms of pubs. However, be warned that a group of us went and asked about happy hour, one waitress specifically pointed to the list of Drafts and said all in happy hour. But when the bill came, apparently all except for the cider which we had all ordered believing it was happy hour. To add insult to injury, we went to use the voucher we had won in their pub quiz stating all food and drink included, then the waitresses returned and said 'oh not included in voucher’ and basically try different excuses not to let us have what we were told was included in happy hour. A friend even called the manager, and after a half hour discussion, the manager offered us a 30% discount. My friends went back again for pub quiz and reported the complete 'cold shoulder’ by the waitresses (the same ones who served us).
Me personally, it would have to be a very special event for me to go back there.
Cloud 9 - Shanghai
Jin Mao Tower 88, Pudong, im Grand Hyatt, 87. Stock, 200121 Shanghai

5 stars because it’s damned well better value than going up the hypodermic needle that is the TV Oriental Pearl Tower! I would definitely recommend it to visitors - best time to go is for dusk, watch the lights over the city come on.
Bulldog - Shanghai
Wu lu mu qi lu 1, Shanghai

As pubs in Shanghai go, it’s improved a lot since it changed from British-Bulldog to Bulldog (new management). It has a projector for watching sky sports and also a pool table.
Serves British 'classics’ like cottage pie, bangers n mash… (Not sure how it now deals with large groups of people. Had been there as a company outing with a group of about 12, and the time it took to serve all our food took over 1 hour! Some colleagues got their food straight away whilst others waited - the reason was 'they had only 1 oven’. Having said that, service for drinks at least had improved a lot since it had changed hands).
There’s 2 for 1 dinner deals every Monday and Happy hour every hour! (Yep, not kidding).
Thai House - Shanghai
Wu Ding Lu near Xi Kang Lu 657, Number 12, Apartment 205, Shanghai
10-10-2008
Down-to-earth, unpretentious Thai food at a price that’s very right (esp. in comparison to the other Thai chains but ok, their decor is not fancy like the chains). They open till late and offer food delivery also.
Beaware if you’re looking for this for the first time. You need to go down a dark alley, turn right, walk up the stairs to what looks like an office building!
Borders Books & Music - Ellesmere Port
34 Coliseum Way, Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire CH65 9HD
10-10-2008
Great place that has a HUGE range of books, comfortable for browsing, reading, drinking coffee from Starbucks. Best thing is - it’s open till late.
It’s kind of a like a library - great for reference, only more modern in terms of decor and stocks up-to-date books.
Though I still prefer to buy online afterward and save cash! ;-)
