Borders Books & Music - Ellesmere Port

34 Coliseum Way, Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire CH65 9HD

30-11-2008

Borders is usually one of my favourite shops. Hundreds of magazines to flick through, thousands of books to peruse and a proper cafe to tuck yourself up in while you flick through all the literature you have collected. Borders in Ellesmere has a huge children’s section which is well stocked and has a good range of graphic novels which most book shops neglect.
Borders in Ellesmere is spoiled by its cafe. Either its brilliant and however many staff were working there would still be huge queues, or there are too few staff to handle the volume of customers. Nothing spoils a relaxing trip more than a twenty minute queue for coffee followed by a good stand because there is nowhere to sit. Boo.

PizzaExpress - Ellesmere Port

Unit 57 Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village, Kinsey Road, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire CH65 9JJ

30-11-2008

As with most Pizza Express restaurants I’ve been to, this one had lovely food and good service in a nice atmosphere. We were kept waiting a little while longer than we would have liked before ordering, but it is a small gripe. The food arrived quickly once ordered and was very tasty. The music playing was unobtrusive, which is rare when a restaurant is quiet. It is situated within the Cheshire Oaks retail park, and so was quiet in the evening as it is one of the few places there open until 10. This also makes parking very easy - we were able to pull up right outside the door!

Wrexham Maelor Hospital - Wrexham Technology Park

Croesnewydd Road, Wrexham, Wales LL13 7TD

Had to rush my daughter to A&E a few months ago when her face swelled up after having some cows’ milk for the first time. The staff were absolutely wonderful. We were seen very quickly and the nursing staff were very claming and lovely with my daughter - really cheering her up. We were referred up to Children’s ward within an hour and the fantastic service continued. We saw everybody we needed to from the consultant (allergy specialist) to the dietician. We even got to see the dermatologist after waiting for months for our referal to come through. I really can’t praise the staff enough. They were calm, professional and friendly. I hope I never have to see them again though!

Silly Barts Wrexham - Wrexham

Unit 2 Jaeger House, 141 Holt Road, Wrexham, Wales LL13 9DY

I took my daughter to her friend’s second birthday party here. It did seem to be very well set up for parties. The kids had about half an hour free play and then went through to the party room for a few games and some food. They tailored the games to the age of the children and didn’t push them too much. There was also plenty of time for more free play after the party bit. The mother of the birthday boy loved the fact that she only had to keep an eye on her own child and not worry about anything else. However, I wouldn’t take my daughter here any other time. There were a lot of older children being very stupidly on the big slide (throwing themselves down it) and they weren’t being stopped by staff. This made the atmosphere quite tense and chaotic and I didn’t feel very safe there. It just felt too big for small children.

Blue Bear's - Wrexham

106 Coed Aben Road, Unit 108, Wrexham, Wales LL13 9UH

30-11-2008

Have been here a couple of times with my daughter (18 months old). The first time we went, she was only crawling but still really enjoyed being able to crawl up the ramp thing and through the tunnel. The second time she was walking, and although it took her a long time to get used to the place, there was no stopping her when she got her confidence. It does get very busy in the school holidays and on the weekend especially if it’s raining, but out of these times it’s very quiet and is great for little ones to build up their confidence. The staff are lovely. They serve Costa coffee and a range of snack type meals (sandwiches made to order) and there are comfy sofas and lots of tables and chairs for the adults. Very clean and tidy too.

Chequers Wine Bar - Wrexham

7-9 Church Street, Wrexham, Wales LL13 8LS

27-11-2008 (updated on 30-11-2008)

Chequers Wine Bar is the antithesis of everything a wine bar should be. If you cannot avoid the club itself, you must certainly avoid the wine which is the most god awful plonk you are likely to every get your mouth around.
Chequers has all the atmosphere of football match just before a riot starts, it is intrusively noisy, frequently dirty and bewilderingly packed tighter than a sardine tin.
If there is anything less appetising than the wine it is the cocktail list. The Sangria which has to be seen to be believed (but certainly not tasted) is white opaque liquid that looks nothing like the red wine sangria should be made from..

Lemon Tree - Wrexham

29 Rhosddu Road, Wrexham, Wales LL11 2LP

30-11-2008

I’v only visited the Lemon tree once and have not been tempted to come back. While there was nothing shockingly awful about the experience, everything )the food, the wine, the service) was distinctly average.
I found it particularly galling when I told the waitress I wanted to order wine. She asked if I wanted red or white. I told her white. She asked if I wanted dry or sweet. I decided I’d had enough of this joyless guessing game and asked for the wine list. I didn’t like the feeling that I couldn’t be trusted to order my own wine. There are better restaurants in Wrexham.

Cherry Hill Childrens Day Nursery - Wrexham

91 Borras Park Road, Wrexham, Wales LL12 7TF

29-11-2008

We visited three nurseries before settling on Cherry Hill. For us it seemed to maintain the balance of a place where our child could have fun and be cared for while we were at work, while also having a range of activities that could stimulate her to develop. Cherry Hill did not have the atmosphere of a pre - pre school like one nursery we visited, but neither did it have a TV afternoon or a 'sausages for different ages’ policy.
Our little girl has a milk allergy which has done much to test the staff but they have yet to be defeated. All the staff I have met at Cherry Hill interact wonderfully with our daughter and I am content that we made the best choice in sending her there.

Venture - Chester

19 Upper Northgate Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 4EE

29-11-2008

We went here after we had received a voucher for a free photo after buying a new car. Our little girl was a few months old and it seemed like a good opportunity to capture the moment. It was easy to book, although I sensed they didn’t want to give precious weekend sessions to people using a voucher, and they were persistent in suggesting grandparents attended to maximise the buying potential.
The photographer we had was an instant hit with our little girl and spent an hour or more snapping away until she got bored with the whole thing.
We arranged to see the pictures a week later and then they hit us with how much it was all going to cost. I’m not exactly poor but I thought their prices were staggeringly expensive. Ludicrously expensive. The point I am trying to get across, it they were expensive. Took our free photo and bought the cheapest picture on the menu to go with it and even then I don’t think I got value for money.
The pictures were fantastic and if you can afford it I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. If money is a factor I’d give them a wide berth.

Jamuna Tandoori - Wrexham

18 Yorke Street, Wrexham, Wales LL13 8LW

For me this is the best value indian takeaway in Wrexham. There must be something special about it because I’ve started to use it regularly, rather than the old indian I used to use which would deliver to my house.

The food is consistantly good and the staff are always polite in the restaurant. Every now and then when I telephone to order there is a bit of an issue where my thick welsh accent and the waiters bangladeshi accent are a bit too strong for each other and neither of us can understand what the other is saying. He is normally pretty quick to put me on to someone who can comprehend me better and this minor inconvenience is worth it for the quality of the food they provide.
