the Bristolian cafe - Montpelier

2 Picton Street, Bristol BS6 5QA

One word. Fantastic. I loved this place. My wife and I were visiting Bristol over the weekend and stumbled across this place.

Its brilliantly tucked away in a really bohemian/student/arty area of Bristol which in itself is lovely.

The menu is excellent with plenty of choice for vegetarians and us carnivores alike. I was hugely impressed by the fact that all their meat is free range and/or organic.

We both had 2 flat whites which were exceptional and the full English which was easily one of the best breakfasts I've had in a cafe for a very long time. The staff were friendly and the whole place just had a really pleasant and relaxed vibe.

I'll go back here on my next visit. Its almost enough reason to up sticks from London and move there!

This place is no longer open. In its place is now Istanbul Meze Mangal, a fantastic new Turkish restaurant.

Istanbul Meze Mangal - Colliers Wood

Fantastic new place opened up on the site of the old Delhi Heights restaurant.

We went there last Friday and were amazed with how good it was. We used to live in North London where Green Lanes is the place to be if you want good Turkish food. Not so any more.

They've kept the decor of Delhi Heights, a mixture of eastern european nightclub and bollywood bling. The men's loo's are incredible with a changing lightshow. Strangely, this only adds to the atmosphere and charm of Istanbul Meze Mangal.

Starting with a mixed hot and cold starters was a masterstroke and everything was incredible. Particular mention must be made to the tomato and cous cous dip of which I cannot remember the name.
We ate Iskender, Kuju Beyti and my favourite Yoghurtlu for mains. Brilliant dishes all. The only critique I can give to the fabulously cooked meats was the lack of Iskender sauce on my yoghurtli kebab which I typically expect. Not to worry though, because at the mention of this I was very quickly supplied with a little pot of sauce which completed the dish perfectly.

I live down the road and will definitely be back on a regular basis to this place. Fantastically friendly staff (who kept the phone I left for me the next day) really made our night fun.

Meat Liquor - Marylebone

76 Welbeck Street, London W1

So, I'd been wanting to go here for a few months after hearing rave reviews and the hype surrounding the place and its humble street-food beginnings.

There was a queue when we arrived (Saturday night) though it was moving surprisingly fast. I could imagine it would get to be pretty annoying were it for any longer than we waited (about 40 mins). They have a quite strict queueing system, which means you cannot hold places for people in your group, which is actually something of a good idea but goes to show this places' popularity.

Once inside, you're greeted with a wall of sound, both from the blazing speakers pumping out 50's rock'n'roll and from the bar and tables of the punters themselves. This is definitely not a place to come to quietly pass the time with a burger and fries. This is party-time! And a very well organised party at that. The atmosphere is, for want of a better word, hedonistic, in that you feel as though you've stumbled into some little-known underground speakeasy where the clientel are making the most of its secrecy. The thing of course is that everyone now knows of this place, so I'm impressed at how they've managed to keep the vibe going...They also have the novel addition of a photo booth which takes surprisingly good quality pictures, definitely a big bonus for any group night out.

We were seated within about 15 minutes of arriving and had the change to get in some photo booth time, a pint of 'house grog' (excellent) and a shot at the bar.

The menu is nice and simple, a few variations on the burger, 2 hot dogs, fried, onion rings etc... Nothing looked overly expensive and I suspect that they offset keeping the food reasonable by charging well for the booze.

We ordered a burger each (4 of us), a Chilli Dog, Chilli & Cheese fries and Onion Rings to share. Definitely plenty of food and a good rounded selection from the menu.
Burgers are king and all were cooked excellently medium rare (no option given when ordered). The Chilli Dog was ok but not outstanding. Chilli * Cheese fries, however, were my standout of the night. Lovely melted Jack cheese top and a VERY good (and seemingly house made) chilli, which was so moreish and memorable I wanted it the next morning for breakfast.

The 4 of us spent a total of £140. At £35 a piece I thought it quite good as we weren't bothered about the bill going in....

All in all a really fun, filling and thoroughly enjoyable night out. Highly recommend going at least once to this one of a kind pig-out palace!

Garnier Restaurant - Earls Court

314 Earl's Court Road, Earl's Court, London SW5 9BQ

My wife surprised me by taking me here as a surprise for a posh Saturday lunch.

We were greeted warmly by the lovely French Maitre d’, who sat us immediately at a wonderful corner table. The service was incredible and it’s evident that the wait staff here are at the top of their game and enjoying what they do. You’d think they had been open for years rather than just a few months.

Clientele seemed to be mostly French, or at least they were able to speak French very well. This I have to say only added to the atmosphere, which is definitely formal enough to be a special occasion place but by no means stiff.

We ordered a half bottle of the Gewürztraminer which was the second cheapest on the list, but the quality was very impressive. If that’s anything to go by I suspect the rest of the wine list is very good indeed.

We ate from the set lunch menu which is extremely reasonably priced and the standard of the food was enough to have us planning a visit in the near future for the full A la Carte experience. Can’t wait!

Great Service, Great Food, Great Wine.

Go here as soon as you can before the secret gets out!

Went last night for the first time. the venue itself is impressive and full of little cosy nooks, which i like. the music was sort of jazz drum & bass which would have been fine if the treble wasnt cranked to 10 and the bass 0. Wasnt enough to matter though. Food looks to be rubbish but its not really somewhere to eat. There seems to be plenty of live music and a comedy night which could be good. Staff were friendly but a bit overly concerned with looking cool for my liking. Over all a pretty decent place to share a bottle of vino and listen to the local X Factor dropouts.

Fantastic little place for some quality and fresh lamb or chicken shawarma. A cut above your regular Turkish kebab house. This place is Lebanese and definitely my preference for a tasty snack. The service is very friendly and when I went there were plenty of regulars popping in to shoot the breeze... Will be a good place to try out my limited Arabic after a night out.

Izote - Sydney

Easily the best Mexican food I have ever had. The burritos are amazing, tortillas are homemade as ar the chips and excellent guacamole.

My wife and I recently left Australia to return to the UK and still talk about this place. We always felt like part of the family and actually feel genuinely sad that we won’t be back.

Go if you can, order everything on the menu and enjoy!

Touted as a traditional Free Range Butchers, this place delivers on that promise. Definitely not your trendy Ye Olde Butcher Shoppe, there's no 200yr old cutting block, no frosted windows and men in striped aprons and hats (even if I do love a bit of that). This place is simply a great butchers. All beef is hung a minimum of 5 weeks, all pork and poultry free range and the gents here know exactly where it all comes from.... What more do you need.
