U Need Us - Portsmouth
30 Arundel Street, Portsmouth PO1 1NW
13-08-2009
As well as party decorations including a good selection of banners and balloons among other things, and lots of fancy dress ideas - with dozens of well priced hats to choose from, U need us also sells a great range of games and puzzles etc if your looking for a gift, that’s a bit more unusual. Other hidden gems include top quality face paints and small coloured button badges - good if you need a lot for an organised event or for “teams”.
Benjys - Portsmouth
Commercial Road, Portsmouth PO1 1HG

Even though they are right next to Gregg’s Benjy’s does a roaring trade. A nice bonus is that there is seating inside and out. As with many of their competitors they do a meal deal of a drink, crisps and sandwich. Personally I prefer their pasta salads and fruit salads. All their prices are competitive and I’d agree with the other reviewer that their filter coffee is good. I tried an Americano there once but prefer the filter coffee (and it’s cheaper too)!
Walkabout Inn - Portsmouth
5-7 Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth PO1 2RY

I’m not really a fan of this pub, as I don’t find it that female friendly, and I find the clientele often too inebriated! The food is OK but the service is not too hot, I have been in with friends and we have all ordered lunch only to find that one persons meal had been completely forgotten, so they missed lunch as having waited for the food to be cooked there was not enough of our lunch break time left to wait all over again. They do sometimes run a promotion where you can get a burger for £1.00

Where else in Portsmouth can you get cod and chips for £1.90?
Not only is this a Chinese takeaway but they also serve a limited fish and chips menu. I believe their prices are the cheapest in Portsmouth, and yet the quality of their food is great (even the chips are always nice and fresh having been cooked in clean oil, and not kept heated for hours on end). It’s such a busy place there’s no time for chips to go stale anyway! Their Chinese menu is full of all your essential takeaway favourites at a great price and their king prawn dishes are my favourite as they feature a huge portion of proper big king size prawns, not the pale imitation you get in many places. Service is always polite, friendly and as quick as possible, and of course you can phone in your order then collect it to save waiting.
Bombay Bay - Portsmouth
Fort Cumberland Road, Southsea Marina, Portsmouth PO4 9RJ

I’m really surprised to see so few reviews for this excellent Indian restaurant. I guess one factor is it’s location is rather out of the way, and unless you have been recommended it you are unlikely to find it by accident. That said a taxi to The Bombay Bay shouldn’t be hugely expensive (and it’s worth getting there) or you can take a short walk along the seafront, or from the nearest bus stop.
The Bombay Bay has it’s own website and as you can see from the menu online the prices are excellent value for the quality of the food. The pictures are representative of just how nicely the meals are presented.
I was surprised by the generously sized portions and very pleased as all the dishes I have tried have been delicious.
The restaurant is very clean with a nice atmosphere and well placed tables and for those who smoke, and those who want to enjoy the view and a spot of fresh air there is also a balcony which is a nice bonus.
Online Cafe - Portsmouth
163 Elm Grove, Southsea, Portsmouth PO5 1LU

I’ve only popped in a couple of times when I moved house and was waiting for my Internet connection to be set up, otherwise I don’t really have any reason to use Internet cafes. The service was fine, had a couple of cups of tea which were perfectly fine, nothing special but certainly drinkable and besides I was there to use send emails not drink in the atmosphere and extensive range of beverages! There was more space than many places give you which is really nice as I hate using computers where you are cramped up to the person next to you or feel like they are looking over your shoulder.
char bar - Portsmouth
25 The Board Walk, Port Solent Marina, Portsmouth PO6 4TP

While I can’t really complain at the service we received from the staff, I can’t help feeling that cooking your own food and paying a premium for the privilege is just not my idea of a good meal out. I have only visited once as friends wanted to go. I didn’t find the atmosphere relaxing compared to my restaurants of choice, and thought the prices while comparable to other local restaurants weren’t really worth it for the type of food available. I think it really just isn’t my kind of food, but If you are less adventurous than me maybe you will enjoy the whole premise of char bar.
The Trafalgar - Portsmouth

Okay, so this is indeed a pub, but I love popping in to relax with a coffee during a busy shopping session! My favourite is actually their Mocha, having spent 4 times as much at various coffee shops theirs actually tastes the best with just the right balance of coffee to sweet chocolate. And not only is it cheap but you can get a card at the bar to get your 6th cup free. Our favourite lunchtime snack is chips with 3 bean chili, great valuer and very tasty. As a pub venue for the evenings it’s great value and a good atmosphere. Can take a while to get served at the bar but that happens everywhere. A favorite place to take fiends form out of town as it’s easy to find, cheap, and there’s plenty of seating for large groups.
Cafe Rouge - Portsmouth
Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth PO1 3FA
23-05-2009
I do love the atmosphere of this French restaurant/cafe, it makes for a change of pace during busy days out at Gunwharf Quays. The menu is bursting with tasty options, and while they are all reasonably priced, if you are tempted by several courses (as I so often am) the total can add up rather quickly! That said it is good value for money as the food is always lovely and the service is great. I generally like to visit for a late lunch or on quieter evenings of the week.
pizza express - Portsmouth
gunwharf quays, Portsmouth PO1 1EQ
23-05-2009
This pizza restaurant is set in a good location on Gunwharfs water front, and another point that gets it an extra thumbs up is that the Pizza Express chain participate in the Tesco clubcard rewards scheme so by trading in your club card points you get 4x the value to spend on your food! The prices here are reasonable, but if you are used to eating at other “takeaway” pizza restaurants you may find them a bit more expensive and the pizzas are a different style too. That said you can’t go far wrong with the pizzas here and there are plenty of options for all tastes. I’ve found service good to average, but never disappointing, drinks are nothing special and I haven’t tried their deserts so can’t comment.
