Fresh - Cardiff
32 Royal Arcade, Cardiff, Wales CF10 1AE
19-01-2009
(updated on 22-05-2009)
This is a teeny little sandwich shop in the Royal arcade - I often pop in to pick up my lunch especially their salads yum
The shop itself is literally only big enough for a few people to stand in and there is often a queue stretching out the door - they have blackboards up with all the various fillings as well as daily specials, soups, salads and jacket potatoes. Its run by a husband and wife team who usually are both found behind the counter -they make everything to order so you can have exactly what you want how you want it. Im vegetarian and they have a board with loads of choices including quorn which is the only place ive seen in Cardiff to sell this, they also have homemade cakes and fancy crisps and drinks to complete the meal - its slightly more expensive than getting a shop bought sandwich but its worth it for the freshness and the sevice. They have a loyal customer base and they get to know their regulars.
Cambrian Hotel - Aberystwyth
Alexandra Road, Aberystwyth, Wales SY23 1LG
31-01-2009
This place is a large building encompassing a pub (the cambrian) the hotel upstairs and a restaurant - popular with tourists, students and locals the hotel is situated opposite the train station and is often a popular stop on a pub crawl -the cambrian is famous for its cocktails - pint glasses full of a mix of whatever you choose (there are lots of funny named options to choose from) th prices in this place seem to go up and up and up but it doesnt seem to stop the popularity and its always really busy - there is another bar upstairs as part of the hotel that isnt open to the public like the downstairs bar - I think they could encompass this somehow with the main bar to create more space. There is a pool table at the back of the pub which is always really busy and you can either get bar meals or go through to the restaurant for something to eat
Office Shoes - Cardiff
109 Queen Street, Cardiff, Wales CF10 2BH
31-01-2009
Office shoes sell all types of shoes for men womens and kids -they have quite a wide range of different styleds - although this shop is best suited to the fashion concious - they are also one of few retailers in Cardiff that stock UGG boots and have amazing sales where they reduce prices by up to 80% they go up to a size 9 in ladies shoes in quite fashionable styles but unfortunately the mens range stops at a 12 whiuh means it doesnt cater for my partners size 14 feet! As someone with a reasonably average size 6 I can usually find what im looking for and would go here first if I wanted something particular - the shop isnt particularly cheap but I find the shoes to be better quality than you might find in the cheapest shops
Homebargains - Cardiff
Cowbridge Road East, Cardiff, Wales CF11 9AH
31-01-2009
As the name says lots and lots of bargains for your home - really cheap prices on toiletries, homewares and foods - the stock changes frequently so I visit frequently - most things are cheaper than other places (although be careful as this isnt always the case as sometimes packaging sizes are smaller) this is the kind of place I go to for a particular item and then come out with tons of stuff - since the amount of carparking has reduced in Canton the main problem is finding somewhere nearby to park, although its on a main bus route. Homebargains sells alcohol which makes it a bit different from other bargain shops.
Wilkinson - Cardiff

I was really pleased when they opened a wilkinsons in Cardiff as they are quite cheap places to buy toiletries and home products, I visit this store frequently as they sell a wide range of DIY products and I am currently doing up my house - but they have a good range of soft furnishings, garden stuff and furniture - they also sell food and its worth having a look as you can often pick up a bargain. Their staff are friendly and helpful - the last time I visited I wanted some catlitter - as this is quite heavy one of the members of staff went and picked up a basket on wheels for me to help me take it to the till - they also will point out at the till if you have missed any special offers on the products you are buying so you dont miss out.
Bar Billabong - Cardiff
The Globe Centre, Wellfield Road, Cardiff, Wales CF24 3PE
31-01-2009
Ive been here to watch sport on a couple of occasions - its a good place to watch matches due to the huge number of tvs on offer - I was surprised that it wasnt actually that busy on the occasions I visited and that meant that there wasnt the atmosphere I was expecting. They have bars upstairs and downstairs but the toilets are in the basement so there is lots of people traipsing up and down the stairs all the time. The staff are happy and friendly and its an ok place to hang out especially if there is a group of you - its quite handy if youve been shopping on Albany road but is a bit far from town to move on somewhere else afterwards
Coray & Co - Cardiff
126 City Road, Cardiff, Wales CF24 3DQ

I used to visit this hair salon to get my hair cut and highlighted, I first found the salon when id just moved to Cardiff by wondering down city road and calling in to see them when I needed a last minute appointment before- my stylist was very good and I was pleased with how she did my hair so carried on visiting for a couple of years - they are very computerised and send out texts to remind you of your appointment and keep details of all your appointments so they can check back on your colours etc. I think they may also keep details of conversations you had with the hairdresser as welll (either that or the stylists have good memories!). If you have a long appointment they give you plenty of tea and coffee and also offer additional services like conditioning treatments when they are styling your hair the only reason I stopped going here was that my stylist left and I decided to try somewhere else but I would go back there to try someone new.
Ema Balti - Splott
222 Carlisle Street, Cardiff, Wales CF24 2PH
31-01-2009
OK takeaway in Splott - this place opened in a big launch just over a year ago - its biggest pull is the deal of a starter, main, side dish and rice for a set price - it works out cheapest if you go and collect and there is a comfortable sitting area to wait in. I didnt find the range of vegetarian food as good as is found in certain other takeaways in Cardiff but its adequate for a quick meal, the main reason I visit there is that its handy for where I live rather than the quality of the food.
Splott Fish Bar - Cardiff
Splott Road, Cardiff, Wales CF24 2BW
31-01-2009
Very average fish and chip shop, they also sell pizzas and kebabs, in competition with the other takeaways on Splott Road the prices are reasonable and the prices ok - they seem to be open long hours which is the main reason I visit them and there is usually a crowd of teenagers hanging around outside eating chips. I find their choice of uniform strange - they all wear red fleece tops with Splott Fish Bar on there - as it is so hot in their with the cooking that is going on but it seems a clean place to buy from and the staff themselves are friendly enough
Lidl - Cardiff
East Tyndall Street, Cardiff, Wales CF24 5GT
31-01-2009
Large discount supermarket selling the usual range of food, they also have a range of “specials” that are products brought in on a week to week basis in a theme for example DIY where they sell a variety of tools and accessories at good prices. I try to do some of my supermarket shopping here as the prices are cheaper than Tescos although the range is much more limited and some products are not as good quality - they do not stock many vegetarian products like tofu, quorn or tvp but apparently they are good for fancy cheeses, meats and salamis. Lidl are still selling loaves of bread for 40p which is amongst the cheapest around in this credit crunch - I also recomment their museli which I actually prefer over more expensive brands.
