Yes, the staff are the most realiably sulky I’ve ever encountered, but I like to see that as a challenge. And you would be miserable too if you had to deal with swarms of drunken civil servants all the time. Has a lovely outdoor pavement/road area, and charming cosy downstairs. Overpriced, standard pub food, always runs out of crisps. Easily the second best pub in the area.

Really small, quiet, really cool with a bar made of books, nice friendly posh sounding staff and scrabble tiles on the toilet floor. Food is good and not too expensive, lots of good stuff to drink. Kind of a like a library would be if it was a bar.

I never go in here even for a paper without spending at least £15 and 45 minutes. Sainsbury’s deluxe for those who are accustomed to better things (I’m talking about Waitrose of course). I understand this place caused a huge bourgeois furore when it was opened because it totally decimated an actual market nearby - but I can’t say I care. did the market stock organic icing sugar and angostura bitters I ask you?

hooray, a coffee shop that also sells beer and wine - so obvious yet so hard to find in the UK, why is that? plentiful intellectual reading matter (and I mean seriously intellectual - I’ve never seen the journal Foreign Policy in a cafe before) on hand for posing too - perfect!

This place does everything it can to make you feel like you're really in a genuine French bistro - red check tablecloths, frogs legs and snails on the menu, pictures of ze Eiffel Tower (which I recognised from Ikea) and charmingly accented staff. Despite this blatant appeal to naff stereotypes, it actually sort of works. OK, I've never been to a restaurant that was this French-looking in actual France, but the food was genuinely great, and affordable, and the waiters were nice, and they didn't make a fuss about us turning up really late on Friday night or ordering tap water (as well as wine, of course!). In many ways, better than an actual French bistro.

Crappy-o-crap. Actually it probably does do pretty nice food but I can’t forgive them for leaving me with a hangover and no breakfast and then, when everyone else had finished, serving me a single piece of dry toast (in a basket) for 2 quid! Back to Big Al’s it is then.
