Makro Cash and Carry - Eccles

. liverpool road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M30 7RT

13-11-2011

We used this store (and the one in Knowsley) for the whole time we ran a pub. After a short period the store offered us a Gold card due to the amount we were spending there. We told them that we only spent so much because the offers and general prices were always so good, but yes thanks.
This enabled us to use a different door (actually better than it sounds when you come out with a trolley-full of stuff and don’t have to push it all over the carpark) and a dedicated till.
The staff always proved to be extremely helpful when asked. I think those who have complained about the attitudes, possibly didn’t make their requests clearly enough, or were aggressive in manner, but can’t really comment further.
Yes, there are times when they don’t have stocks of some items – I am sure every business has run out of something at one time or another, especially when they have as many customers as Makro do.

Anne Hunt Well done Knibbd. You have just proven how the pen is certainly mightier than the sword!

F Houghton & Family Wholesale Butchers - Warrington

9d Bankhall Park, Wharf Street, Warrington, Cheshire WA1 2DG

13-11-2011

My wife ran the Ring O’ Bells pub for three and a half years with many compliments o the food quality. This was, to a large extent, helped by the meat we got from Houghton’s.
This is truly a family butchers, as most of the family are involved in the day-to-day business. They would deliver to us in time for the afternoon cooking session even when my wife forgot to order until after midnight! (They have an answerphone and act on the night’s messages first thing in the morning. The few times we were even slightly disappointed in something, it was changed immediately.
I would recommend Houghton’s to any business interested in local, good quality cuts of meat.

Blackburne Arms - Warrington

Orford Green, Orford, Warrington, Cheshire WA2 8PL

This is a very traditional pub on one of the main roads through Warrington as used by locals. By that, I mean it is heavily frequented by the community, but is a little out of the way for visitors to the area. This is a shame, as the atmosphere is very welcoming and they serve some excellent beers, spirits and wines.
I’ve never had occasion to eat here, but reports from friends are that it is reasonably priced and tasty.
One of the few pubs in Warrington which still has a car park which can fit more than 6 cars in!
11.11.11
Update; The new landlord is a friend, but I have not eaten here for a long time. The carpark is still good (despite the front part seeming to be a car sales pitch). t is still a welcoming pub, but it seems that the food has now become very basic, although excellent value.

Anne Hunt Good to see that although the pub owner is a friend you can still be unbiased in your opinions – pretty good!

St Oswalds Parish Club - Warrington

Padgate Lane, Warrington, Cheshire WA1 3LB

31-10-2011

As a social club, this fulfils every promise. My wife and I used to go there years ago, but recently attended a charity Halloween Quiz in aid of Warrington Disability Partnership. This raised over £600 and was very enjoyable.
My only complaint would be the choice of drinks. I prefer to drink a beer that I can taste – once it is below five degrees, it could be anything! All beers were chilled to the death. Prices for drinks were all reasonable and the non-drivers could chose from quite a few – not quite as cold as the beers!
At the interval, pie and peas were available. I had eaten well already, but they looked and smelled delicious and, judging from those who tried them, lived up to their promise.
I believe that quizzes are held here every month in aid of different charities. I would recommend a visit to any who enjoy a very varied night out.

Cherry Tree - Warrington

Common Lane, Warrington, Cheshire WA3 4EX

09-10-2011

We went to this pub for the first time this week – purely because the October CAMRA meeting was being held there and it is on a convenient bus route.
I was extremely impressed by the feel of the place. The restaurant side looks to be very well attended with some amazing meals on the menu. I didn’t know you could get “chinese-style” enchiladas! Unfortunately we were too late to get food and had more important matters in mind.
The beers were very good; a superb choice of hand-pulled real ales, competently served and well-kept. At £2.70 a pint, they were a bargain these days – unless you happen to have an in-house brewery.
Next time I have a night off, we will have a trip there to sample the ffod as well as the beer.

The Goose - Leigh

33 King Street, Leigh, Greater Manchester WN7 4LP

22-08-2011

This is situated at the entrance to the Bus Station in Leigh – very handy if you want a drink without the problem of having to drive after it.
Personally, I find the Big screen tv’s on almost every wall irritating, but I’m sure there are many who love it.
The decor is welcoming and the service good for a town centre pub.
The toilets are wonderfully clean and looked after.
There are some excellent deals on jugs of cocktails and on the food; unfortunately, we had already eaten before travelling to here, so didn’t try it – possibly on a future visit? We will definitely be returning at some point.
As CAMRA members, the lack of good real ale was a little disappointing, but the John Smith’s ESB, served from what looked like handpumps, was quite drinkable, even if it did closely resemble a smoothflow keg beer.

bluesofty Jugs of cocktails? Who needs ale

Very Important Qyper medal for knibbd

knibbd I think we would have gone for one of them, but we were only checking it out while waiting for a bus home. Definitely a return trip in the future – by bus again!

The Peacock - Warrington

Dewhurst Road, Birchwood Shopping Centre, Warrington, Cheshire WA3 7PG

22-08-2011

First visit to this new pub as we were informed they served good food and a choice of real ales. In the event, we were not disappointed.
After a pint of Banks’ Sunbeam (and one of Marston’s Long Hop for the lady!), we chose our table and scanned the menu. This was our first mistake as it is so comprehensive, one takes ages to read through everything, yet there is a “Specials” board with another twelve or so choices on it!
The service is extremely good and welcoming and the food can only be described as superb. Best of all for us is the policy they have of, when two people order main meals, the cheapest one comes free! As a consequence we had two wonderfully prepared and served meals for less than £10.
Best of all from my point of view is that it is so easy to get to by Warrington bus, enabling me to enjoy the beer properly.
The entire pub, and its toilets, were scrupulously clean and good to be in.

Spinning Gate Shopping Centre - Leigh

Spinning Gate, Leigh, Greater Manchester WN7 4PG

22-08-2011

This is very accessible by public transport or private car. It is a well designed shopping centre with a wide variety of shops available.
I hadn’t visited here for quite a few years and was disappointed in the market hall as the open market used to be superb. Amongst other things, we used to go here for the excellent “Leigh Toaster” – the best cheese in the world for cheese-on-toast or cheese and onion pies. On this visit, we couldn’t find any, yet Warrington Market has it.
At the entrance to Spinning Gate is “The Goose” – a decent pub (despite the big screen tv’s everywhere you look) with some good beers on offer.

Ask - Warrington - Warrington

12 - 14 12 Old Town Hall, Old Market Place, Warrington, Cheshire WA1 1QB

09-08-2011

The service here is absolutely superb. One is made to feel welcome from the initial entrance and this continues throughout.
The meals seem, at first sight, to be expensive, but are actually good value for money – and even better value if you take advantage of the money off vouchers available on the online booking site.
We were a group of six adults and got three of the main meals for £1 each on the special offer.
The wines are rather expensive, but there is an excellent choice. The beer, however, is restricted to one fizzy, bottled lager.
All six meals ordered were top class and the only things left at the end were the clam shells on my plate! (Linguine with clam in shells and chillies).
My second son is gluten intolerant and the waitress brought him a series of printed sheets, showing all ingredients for all menu items. He actually had quite a large choice, something very unusual, even nowadays.

Alford Sports & Social Club - Warrington

Manchester Road, Alford Hall, Warrington, Cheshire WA1 3NJ

20-08-2008 (updated on 09-07-2011)

This is a former works club, transformed once the mills and factories shut down. It caters for a wide variety of pursuits, but is mainly a club with a number of bars including a very plush lounge, a comfortable bar area (with tables for dining), a "games" area with snooker tables, darts, pool, dominoes etc. and extensive function rooms. These function rooms are used for events such as wedding receptions, birthday parties and the like right up to full scale rock nights (The Hamsters have played here) and ballroom dancing.
Well worth the odd visit.
9.7.2011 I attended an excellent charity night here last night. This demonstrated the positive and negative aspects of the club. We were told not to go downstairs for drinks as we aren't members. The upstairs bar had a very small choice of beers and a couple of them were undrinkable. What was on offer was all just above freezing. The entertainment, the room and the refreshments were all first class
