This has to be my favourite bagel place in London. Living out west, I don’t visit this establishment nearly as often as I would like too but this is probably a good thing! One of the cheapest and tastiest meals in London and I often get a 1/2 dozen to take away with a salmon and cream cheese to have on the spot. It’s a good idea to keep some in the freezer for any bagel emergencies if you don’t happen to live a stumble away.

There is always a queue but it goes really quickly as the service is really speedy. A great place to take friends from out of town for the experience.

    Gourmet Burger Kitchen

If you only want to eat once in the day then GBK is the place for you! I ordered the Veggie and Camembert burger and it was seriously piled high. As it came to the table I was thinking “What on earth have I just ordered!”. I don’t normally opt for a vegetarian burger but the sweet potato and the onion jam just sucked me right into ordering it. With melted camembert cheese oozing over the sweet potato, portobello mushroom, aubergine and red pepper, I have to say I was in heaven. There was no way I was picking up this baby in my hands so it was knife and fork the whole way. There was also a tonne of rocket on this burger which I believe was unnecessary and perhaps only put on to give it height?

My sister opted for a smaller classic burger and her partner chose his own custom made to his own specifications burger. I still one the height challenge and thats without any meat!

It was a rather satisfying meal that requires a nap right after eating.

    The Cow

The Cow is one of my favourite winter pubs. The place is dark and cosy and is often packed so its best to go early. The fish stew is the best dish on the menu down at the bar and is the main reason I go to the Cow. It’s a nice hearty dish, especially in winter.

  • Restaurant Ida Davidsen - Copenhagen

    Restaurant Ida Davidsen

1pxt kuju last updated on 02-12-2008:

A typical Danish lunch is Smørrebrød which is essentially an open sandwich usually on rye bread with any number of toppings. A visit to Copenhagen is not complete without lunching at Copenhagen’s most famous Smørrebrød restaurant, Ida Davidsen. The restaurant is located near Kongens Nytorv and booking ahead is highly advised. We arrived at 1pm without a booking and were told that there was no availability until 3 but after some sweet talking and convincing that we eat really fast, the waiter offered us a table for 30mins which we took. After securing a table, we went up to the counter where we were greeted by Ida herself who talked us through the Smørrebrød selection of the day which was on display. After making our selection we sat down and waited for our Smørrebrød to be freshly prepared by the kitchen. We each chose a fish Smørrebrød and a meat Smørrebrød as advised by Ida and each one was delicious.

After eating our Smørrebrød we were told that they had sorted things out and we were no longer on a 30 minute time limit and we could stay and enjoy a coffee and a dessert if we wish. We took them up on their offer and chose a dessert. While the rice pudding took a while to come out the waiter came over and apologised “While I’ve not forgotten about your dessert, unfortunately the chef has! It will be out soon!” Amused by this, we forgave him and our dessert was out in no time at all. The friendly family and honest approach to this restaurant definitely makes it worth a visit.

    The Breakfast Club

This is a fabulous little place with plenty of character with polaroid photos and notes adorning one wall, trinkets scattered about the place, fairy lights and almost everywhere you look someone has left their mark one way or another. There are a choice of different sized tables to sit at and an assortment of chairs which you may find yourself swapping about to get a more comfortable one.

The brunch menu was one of the better ones I’ve seen in awhile but as soon as I saw the bacon and egg sandwiches the guys across from us had, I knew that I had to have it too. Just remember to order at the bar or you will end up feeling like a numpty wondering why they haven’t come to serve you yet. The menu does state “Order at the counter” but since we hadn’t yet had our morning coffee, we can be excused can’t we? The bacon and egg sandwich was delicious and hit the brunch spot. They did forget our coffees which after a bit of prompting from us arrived just after our last mouthful.

I can see this place becoming a regular of mine. Next time I visit, i’m ordering the porridge. Again spotted at another table, it looked incredibly good, even the glassware it came in. I’ll just hope the coffee arrives in a timely fashion!

Oh, and don’t forget to pick up a free 'The Breakfast Club Soho’ button when you pay for your meal!
