Fire and Stone - Covent Garden

31/32 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7JS

04-10-2007 (updated on 19-10-2007)

Love it, love it, love it! I grudgingly tell you about this place, as part of me wants to keep it to myself...

Fire and Stone is the perfect answer to your indecision about what cuisine to have - you can have them all! All of their pizza toppings are themed by continent and all are delicious.. Some of the toppings seem a bit out there for the less adventurous, but trust me, just dive in! The wine list is not extensive, but there's a decent enough choice.

The ambiance is great here too - the place looks like the set of Sex and the City (try to go with 4/5 people as you can get a great booth!!) and there's a giant pizza oven at the front of the shop. Service is a little hit-and-miss, but everything else outweighs that. Do expect, however to be politely asked to finish up if you exceed the 2 hour limit - but hey, it keeps the cost down!

Pricing is equivalent to another, more generic, pizza place on the high street - but that's where the comparison ends...

The Old Bank Of England - Holborn

194 Fleet Street, Holborn, London EC4A 2LT

17-10-2007

This is quite an impressive space. The front door opens up to this huge hall with a bar in the middle. It isn't long before you realise that most of the space is above your head. There are little alcoves to go and sit in to eat.

The menu selection is good and I enjoyed my meal. The staff were friendly and helpful. I will definitely be going back!

Cards Galore - Holborn

86 High Holborn, London WC1V 6LS

17-10-2007

Not your standard high street card shop, this offers a nicer range of cards and gifts, so it always looks like you've gone to trouble (even when you haven't).. As well as all the cards, you'll find gifts such as, money banks, clocks, ornaments, etc. All quite good quality and nothing toooo tacky.

Excellent central location, so handy to pop in your your way home.. They have other branches too, I think.

The Box - Covent Garden

32 Monmouth Street, London WC2H 9HA

17-10-2007

I completely agree with the previous review.. And that's the real appeal of the box - that it's all things to all people. Quite a feat for any bar.

I must say, I prefer being at The Box 'off peak' and it suits the chilled wine bar vibe far better than the sardine can it becomes at the weekend. Whatever time you're in there, there's never any of the hostility that can be found in some of the bars along Old Compton's St.

Sunset Cafe Bar - London

Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8HP

17-10-2007

Nice little sandwich bar.. Doesn't look too inviting at first glance (I didn't venture in for a while), but once in the staff are very friendly and happy to see you. They have a good selection of sandwich fillings and hot dishes. There's also a good sized seating area, but you need to squeeze passed the queue to get to it, which can be a pain at peak times.

Quite good value overall, so can't complain..

Butty Boys - Bloomsbury

17 Elm Street, London WC1X 0BQ

17-10-2007

This is a nice little sandwich bar, but does suffer a little from small portions (for the prices) and there's not really anything special/unique about their selection..

The staff are friendly and I like the vibe they have going on, but that's all that distinguishes it from somewhere like Pret..

The Porterhouse - Covent Garden

21-22 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7NA

17-10-2007

I've been here a few times now, the first time was to meet friends to go on for dinner. It's a really welcome place and a bit of a rabbit's warren inside.

The staff are friendly and you get served pretty quickly considering how rammed it can get by the bar.. I've only had wine here and by the half carafe - I was surprised to find out that the wine was on tap! Quite reasonably priced too and the perfect place to head pre or post dinner.

Johin Sushi Bar - London

96 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8AD

16-10-2007

This is a nice little sushi place – albeit a little confusing (it’s run by an Indian guy, but I always see a European girl making the sushi in the morning..) I digress.

The selection of sushi is nice and the quality is good. I think it’s around £7 for a box with about 10 pieces of sushi in. They also do hot food such as teriyaki something-or-other.

They do cut price sushi after 6pm (£4.50 a box), but don’t go in at 5.58pm expecting a discount – you won’t get it!

Yerli Kaya's Sandwich Bar - London

92 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8AJ

16-10-2007

Nice little sandwich bar on Gray’s Inn Road. They provide a good range of sandwich fillings and a good selection of breads. The service is always excellent and very friendly and quick, so you’re never stuck behind a huge line of people. My favourite filling is the minty lamb (yum!).

Not bad value for the portion size and location, so all in all a good find!

Cittie of York - Holborn

I find this pub a little weird. It seems like you step off the street and into a different time..

The first thing that strikes you is how dark and stale the air is inside. They have some nice booth style tables you can sit at, if you can find one free. I’ve been for lunch a couple of times with friends, but never been too impressed with what was on offer.. It’s basically a cheap pub you could find in any town/suburb in the country. That being said, it is very unusual and worth at least one visit.

Oh, and be nice to the staff taking food orders – it shouldn’t, but it makes a BIG difference!
