Fruitmarket Gallery - Edinburgh

29 Market Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1DF

29-12-2008

I’d first like to question why the fruitmarket gallery is listed as a supermarket on here??

Moving on from that niggle- I love the fruitmarket gallery. The bookshop is great- full of those books that you don’t need but lust after; the cafe is really nice, good atmosphere, fresh food; and the gallery space is gorgeous. Some of the shows are a bit hit and miss- I tend to enjoy every other show- but it’s FREE, and always worth checking out. The staff are really well trained and knowledgeable about the current exhibition which is really refreshing.

The Forest Cafe - Edinburgh

141 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 9JN

29-12-2008

Forest is fine; it is cheap, it’s got a good space for hire upstairs which I’ve used to do casting calls in the past, it has some comfy chairs and free wifi. It is, however, a bit rank. It is quite flea-bitten, the food is in my opinion not particularly inspiring, and the staff- who admittedly are volunteers- seem to be high all the time.

Favorit - Edinburgh

20 Teviot Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2QZ

29-12-2008

Favorit is one of those places that I seem to end up in for lunch/to study/for a drink and wonder why- while the atmosphere is fine and the staff are always friendly and good for some banter, the menu seems lacking- there are three choices for sandwiches, then soup, nachos and… err.. That’s about it really. I wish they would either do more food and be a proper cafe, or get rid of the food and some of the tables and become a bar.

C.C Blooms - Edinburgh

23-24 Greenside Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3AA

29-12-2008

Oh lord. Tragic is definitely one way of describing CCs. This is the sort of place you only drag yourself into when you are VERY drunk/other establishments are on fire. Good for a laugh, in that you can stand and laugh at all the elderly gay gentlement cruising for toy boys. And at the drinks prices, which are normally ridiculous. Like the plague, it is best to avoid this one.

The Outsider Restaurant - Edinburgh

15 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1EE

29-12-2008

I think the outsider is a great little restaurant; Lunch is particularly good as the prices are much more reasonable than in the evening. The service can be a bit slow/sloppy when it’s busy, but for a large space it feels intimate and the wine list is fantastic.

Brass Monkey - Edinburgh

14 Drummond Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9TU

26-12-2008

Love Brass Monkey- it’s a bit small, a bit grotty, it has a massive bed, cheap drinks, shows movies, was better pre smoking ban but it’s not their fault; i love it. Good bar staff too.

Oddfellows - Edinburgh

14 Forrest Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2QN

26-12-2008

Oddfellows- It’s cheap as long as you are a student with a deal card otherwise it’s too expensive; it’s too big, making it feel soulless/wetherspoons-esque; on the weekend it is FULL of hen and stag do’s/birthday parties, and by about 10pm the floor is covered in broken glass. The food is ok, pretty bog standard really, and it just has no soul/atmosphere. meh.

Under the Stairs - Edinburgh

3a Merchant St., Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2QD

26-12-2008

Under the Stairs is one of my favourite drinking holes in Edinburgh for a number of reasons- good drinks, comfy seats, nice food, good clientèle, nice staff and good outdoor smoking space. The cocktails are delicious, the wines are really nice, prices are decent and the atmosphere is really relaxed, unlike the rowdy bars that make up the majority of Edinburgh. Love it.
