Lounge 10 - Manchester

10 Tib Lane, Manchester, Greater Manchester M2 4JB

23-11-2008

Beautiful food in a beautiful setting. I went to lounge 10 for the first time last night and was blown away with how lovely the food was, no one in our group had a bad meal, however I did find the portion sizes to be small so make sure you order a side plate of veg/chips with your main course.

I had the mushroom risotto which I can honestly say was the best I have ever tasted and the Eton Mess for desert which was just heavenly.

The atmosphere in the restuarant is bustly and they have an excellent live singer on which adds to the night. They also have an amazing magician who will visit your table whilst you are waiting for your food and show you some tricks, ask him to make the cards fly-I have never seen anything like it and could not work out how it was done.

The only down side to our experience was that we were sat on the ground floor and it was very cold when people were coming and going through the front door. Admittedly it was freezing outside last night so there is not much the staff could have done to make it any warmer but if you are visiting in the winter I would recommend asking for a table upstairs when you book.

Cafe Loco - Manchester

65 Whitworth St West, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 5WQ

19-11-2008

The pizza here is delicious, especially so after a night on the beer! It is deep pan pizza with tasty toppings that seems to melt in your mouth. I think my boyfriend would eat the pizza from here every night for tea if I let him.
The only thing that puts me off is the big Halal sign in the window, before I saw this I happily ordered chicken and pineapple pizzas and enjoyed every bite of them but now unfortunately I have to stick to none meat pizza because I can’t stop thinking about it, funny how your mind rules the things you like and don’t like to eat.
The staff in here could be friendlier and I wouldn’t recommend ever eating in, the place is dirty, the seating ripped and one glance at the toilets and you’ll be unable to finish your tea. However nonw of that matters if you’re taking out which the majority of people do.

Cornerhouse - Manchester

70 Oxford Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 5NH

19-11-2008

The cornerhouse cafe is a perfect place to chill and escape the bustle of Manchester city centre. There are plenty of tables and it is light and airy.
They have free wi-fi for customers which is a nice touch although don’t expect to be able to use it if more than a couple of people already are.
The tea and coffee are nice and tehre is a good range of cakes usually. They do have a food menu which includes pizzas and sandwiches but it is limited and the food is not the best, I found my meal to be bland the last time I ate there.
The best thing about the cornerhouse is the mix of people, it isn’t just a student place, people of all ages come in here to relax. You can easily chill out the big sofas with your book or laptop and while away the hours whilst sipping your coffee.

Matt & Phreds Jazz Club - Manchester

64 Tib Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 1LW

19-11-2008

Matt and Phreds is one of my favourite places in Manchester, the perfect place to sit back and relax with a bottle of red and listen to the live, extremely talented musicians.

If you want a table make sure you book well in advance, you’ll only be given one if you’re eating a meal and even then you’ll need to specify that you want one at the front, we once got given a table at the back which meant people stood in front of our table and we couldn’t see.

This place gets busier as the night goes on with people crwoding in to stand at the back and watch the acts so a table at the front is a really good place to be.

The food in here is just average, pizzas and tapas sometimes, it’s nothing to shout about and the service is slow but it’s decently priced and the food isn’t the reason anyone comes to Matt and Phreds.

You’ll find a mix of ages and people in here which adds to the quirkiness of the night. If you like Jazz music it’s pretty hard to beat Matt & Phreds.

KRO2 - Manchester

Unit 13 Oxford Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 7ED

19-11-2008

Kro is a chain of bars in Manchester of which Kro 2 is one of, there is another one further down Oxford Road and also one in Piccadilly gardens. In my opinion this is the best of them.

It is a large glass building with picnic benches out the back making it one of few places where you can sit outside in Manchester city centre in the summer.

The best thing about Kro 2 though is the breakfast, they do full cooked English breakfasts, teacakes, musli, sausage and bacon sandwiches and the coffee is top notch. If you go before 11am they have a deal where a coffee and a sausage sandwich is £2.50. They also have a coffee and a cake deal on all day but the price of that slips my mind at the moment.

At night Kro 2 gets busy in the summer, often too busy to move which can be annoying and it can get very hot in there with it being glass.

The bar prices are too expensive at £5 for some glasses of wine there are cheaper, better places to go for a night out.

In short i’d recommed Kro 2 for breakfast, a coffee or a sociable drink outside on a summer day but there are better places to frequent on a weekend night.

Travelodge Manchester Ancoats - Manchester

22 Great Ancoats Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 5AZ

19-11-2008

This Travelodge is in a fantastic location for a night out in Manchester and is extremely cheap for a city centre hotel at £60 a room, sometimes cheaper if you book in advance. This works out well if you’re a group of friends as the hotel allow up to 4 people to sleep in a room, I think it’s meant to be 3 adults to a room but there is plenty of space with a large double bed, a pull out matress and a sofa, they have never batted an eyelid when we have turned up with 4 girls to each room.
The hotel itself is basic but it’s clean, strangely the last time I went you had to pay to use the TV so remember to take some music with you if you don’t want to do this, I think from memory they were charging £5! You also need to pay a deposit to use hairdryers or irons and you have to collect both these items from reception. From experience the hair dryers aren’t very powerful anyway, it is more convenient to just take your own.

There is a bar area downstairs that is open late and often crowded before and after a night out, being on the ground floor it doesn’t seem to disturb any of the rooms and is a good place to gather whilst waiting for members of your group to finish getting ready.

This hotel is my number one choice when i’m going for a night out in Manchester, the location and price seem to be unbeatable.

Radisson Sas Hotel - Liverpool

101 Old Hall Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L3 9PY

19-11-2008

I stayed at this hotel a year ago and was extremely pleased. The decor was fresh and modern with glass doors on the rooms, the rooms themselves are a nice size, the showers powerful, the pool and steam room decent and the restaurant on site is gorgeous.
The only down side to our stay was that there was a wedding reception on in the hotel which was extremely noisy and went on until the early hours of the morning. We could hear the music from our room and their were children running around the corridors. In the end, knowing we wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway we actually went and sat in the reception and had a drink.

The hotel reception is impressive with a light and airy attrium which makes the hotel stand out. The staff on the whole are friendly although we did find one or two staff seemed disinterested especially on Sunday morning when we were checking out.

Darli Bar - Warrington

120 Bridge Street, Warrington, Cheshire WA1 2RU

19-11-2008

Darli bar is situated in Bridge street right in the heart of all the bars in Warrington town centre, for this reason it can get rowdy and crowded.
It is a large, open bar with a large dancefloor and often has drinks offers on. It serves spirits, wine and lager.

The queues for the bars at not big at a weekend but this bar can get very hectic on student nights-Tuesdays and Thursdays when drinks are very cheap.

It tends to play a mix of music, 70s, 80s, a bit of RNB, dance and chart pop.

At a weekend you’ll find a mix of people in here from 18 year olds to people in their 40s so it can be quite a varied night out.

Birchwood Shopping Centre - Birchwood

49 Dewhurst Road, Warrington, Cheshire WA3 7PG

19-11-2008

Birchwood shopping centre is in dire need of a facelift, it’s run down and often looks in need of a good clean. However it is convenient for the local area, inside is an Asda and Iceland aswell as some chain stores such as New Look and Argos. Parking is free and there is plenty of it, making it easy to come here.

The shops tend to be the cheaper end of the high street stores, newsagents, charity and sports shops.

At Christmas they often have a small grotto and a Santa which is nice for the children.

Birchwood shopping centre is probably not somewhere you would go Saturday shopping, the range of shops is just too small but it is nice to have a quick look around the shops if you are going to one of the supermarkets anyway.

Dog and partridge - Rochdale

520 Bury Road, Rochdale, Greater Manchester OL11 4DQ

19-11-2008

I have only ever been here at night so I can’t comment on the quality of the food.

At night this pub is good fun, it’s busy, the music is loud and people are up chatting and dancing. It is a better alternative to going into Rochdale town for a night out.

The manager is friendly and makes a point of saying hello to people as they enter which I find refreshing, I never understand why more pub owners do not make customers feel valued and welcome like this.

However the only reason I have given this pub 4 instead of 5 stars is that they insist on having dreadful UV lights on at night! I thought UV lights had died out in the 90s but not here. I’m yet to find anyone who actually likes them being on, they make people self concious, you see people talking about them in there and trying to brush the white bits off their clothes. If you are wearing black especially the UV lights will show off every speck of dust or fluff on your clothes and if you’re wearing white you’ll glow like a neon beacon. In my opinion peoples nights out here would be better if they just took the neon lightbulbs out.
