Beavertown brewery - Shoreditch

33 Downham Road, De Beauvoir Town, London N1 5AA

31-12-2012

In April/May 2012, I found out that a new brewery had opened, so I thought I would pop in for a quick half.

The beers that they brew on the premises (in the basement) are the neck oil (bitter) on keg, and the 8 ball (Rye Pale Ale) and the Smog Rocket (Smoked Porter) in bottle, so I took them home to sample (and I wasn't disappointed).

Its a great bar that is also an American diner serving pork and beef ribs/ sliders/ steak / burgers, so there is a nice interior and benches outside so you can watch the world go by ....and look out for Baby Duke in his pram!

Beers were fantastic, my favorite being the Smog as I love smoked beer and have visited Bamberg home of Schlenkerla ad Spezial (Rauch bier). I have to say the Smog is my favourite dark beer of 2012, last year it was the Kernel IBS! 2013 awaits and the Imperial Smog is looking good!

On my very first night in, I met the brewer Logan and Byron, which was great as I had just started all grain home brewing, it was nice to meet a friendly guy who was happy to offer me some tips.

Recently they have introduced their Gamma range (American Pale Ale), a Pumpkin Ale, Black Betty (Black IPA), Imperial Smog (wow its strong and tasty). As you can see I am now a regular at the bar/brewery!

I have eaten there once and we ordered the Beef ribs, pork ribs and sliders, and they were great, but you need to book in advance as they are very very busy, we came early as it was opening on a Saturday afternoon and they could only give us 1 hour 15 minutes, which was Ok as my plate was empty in 15 minutes! You can call or Book online, but I prefer to talk to humans so I called!

They are in Timeout for top places to eat, also for their coctails and best new breery etc, the BBC have reviewed them too as well as the evening standard.....

Go there you won't be disappointed with the beer nor the food!

The Old School Yard - London

I came here for a drink and left after the first one, it was pricey, empty and not much more to say other than that!

My friends and I left to a nicer venue with on Borough High Street with way more reasonable prices.

I won;t be going back unless they give the beer away!

If you know your beers and ciders this is one of the places to be, I remember the Hophead with the Citra hop and it was damn fine.

I will always pop into here if I am passing buy for a quick half.

Love the old school decor and it always rammed, its a bit difficult to find room to stand as its such a narrow bar but if you are lucky you can find a seat upstairs.

My only gripes are its not child friendly, not great for wheelchairs and the toilets are upstairs.

I discovered this brew pub a few years ago and instantly fell in love with their beers, service, staff. I have arranged many microbrewery pub crawls and have been given a free tour which was excellent.

I loved the Mango beer from 3 summers ago and the one last year was delicious too.

But not very impressed with the new brewer I bought 50l of kegs for my Birthday and first 3 kegs we opened were all bad (ie diasatol).

I took the remaining 7 back and they were happy to refund my money.

Love this place but hoping for the new brewer to get his act together.
