Fire and Stone - Covent Garden

31/32 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7JS

I'm easily confused at the best of times, but especially so when reading review about this place... Everyone seems to like the pizzas here, and whilst I admit the toppings are wonderfully diverse and inventive, they fall down in execution. Why? The toppings are too spartan. So the "Thin and crispy" base looks positively thick when such a thin topping is applied. IMHO a pizza is best when there is still a bit of moisture from tomatoes on the topping, but these pizzas just come out bone dry. I, and others at the table (there were 10 of us), were aching for dominos when we left. And I'm not a fan of dominos.

As an aside it's a bit funky, and there's good people watching. It seems that everyone is on a date there, and  it's interesting to see the interactions. Maybe go if that's your thing, but don't get your hopes up about the pizza. I understand the pasta isn't too bad, but the guy who had it was still hungry after.

I too, like the others listed here have tried giraffe for its great breakfasts (is it cool to admit they’re the ultimate hangover place? No? Oh, ok) well, this is a slight change of direction for the hangover-addressing stalwart, and a fresh twist it is too. Our concentration was on flatbreads for the evening (think pizzas with super-thin toppings) amongst the funkipeeps of sohoville. Fresh flavours, but it doesn’t weigh you down like a deep pan would. Hang on. There might just be something in this.Great food with a buzz to it. Give it a try.

We ate here on a Sunday afternoon, around 4pm, and the place was deserted and yet the service was still way short of the mark. To be fair, it could just be the one member of staff that had just lost the will to live and was more interested in his final cigarette out front than bringing our food which was waiting in the dumb waiter. My girlfriends main wasn’t brought until 20 mins after mine by which time I’d finished. People rave about this place, but to me, this place is teutonic, uncomfortable and overpriced for what you get. We live in a city rich in culture. There are many Vietnamese restaurants out there. Try one of the many authentic restaurants before falling for the pretty menus out front and thinking the nouveau cuisine twist will give their fare a refreshing twist; It doesn’t.

Good quality, fairly priced dim-sum, during the day. Comparatively expensive in the evening. Friendly and fast service. Well run, and always a personal touch as staff remember you and you can see them interacting with diners. Oh, and if you’re a plane-spotter, it’s bang opposite london city airport, so loads of planey-type nonsense. Sunday lunch has a buzz about it, but they don’t take reservations, so don’t turn up too late or you’ll be shuffled into a quiet corner and left peering at a cloakroom ticket, waiting for a table. One thing that’s always amazed me about this place is how come so many people know about it, to say its on a remote road in the middle of nowhere. This place must have got where it is on word of mouth.

Wow. Such an unassuming little place on a backwater in Soho, but it blew my socks off. Had the 19.50 set meal ‘A’, but they kept on and kept on bringing so much food, I was genuinely worried of turning into Mr Creosote from ‘The Meaning of Life’. Good quality, flavourful, generous proportions and friendly and attentive staff. I’d have given them a ‘5’ if the a/c was working. Tricky having a restaurant with gas burners at the table, without some kind of aircon. Hot food. Hot service. Hot Peeps. Give it a try. But just wear a swim-suit. Or ask politely if you could have a table in the fridge. Lovely.

I don’t get it; People write quite favourable reviews about this place, but i wonder why. It’s tapas, so you expect small portions, but the prices are in main course territory. The attached photo is for lamp chops. Admittedly delicious, but at nearly 10 pounds for two teeny tiny fatty chops, I’m not sure how the staff sleep a t night. Perhaps the reason they all sneak off to the kitchen is for a quick guffaw. Be prepared for it to be noisy, cramped and uncomfortable. We spent a comparative fortune, but we’re off now to go and have some food as we’re hungry. Tapas I get, but if you’re charging main courses per plate, it just feels like it’s starting to hurt when you sit down, if you see what i mean. Grrrr.
