The Victorian House Hotel - Glasgow

212 Renfrew Street, Glasgow, Scotland G3 6TX

10-09-2012

The staff was not overtly friendly. The breakfast was below average, neither prepared, displayed or served with love, the internet was slow and the login procedure painful (did not remember computers), but worst of all the bathroom had fungus - basically within the silicon of the whole shower in an amount that I would already consider a health threat. The bathroom mirror lamp was broken and no glass for toothbrushing to be found. The window could neither be held open, nor was it secured against being opened from the outside, but nevertheless valuables could not be safely deposited with the hotel. The door and key system did not let you want to leave something behind. The TV was minuscule.

Hotel Adour - Pau

This hotel is a complete organisational disaster. We had booked online and gotten opening times of the reception (online and confirmed by email). They did not fit to the ones at the door. Noone there. Wall telephone to an office where they spoke no English, but even a French person helping us could not achieve anything. Later we got in and the receptionist told us that the bureau and the other receptionists are useless, but the boss would not care.... Room nothing special, breakfast without love. If you can avoid it, stay away from this place until change of ownership/management.

Pizzeria du Gave - Gavarnie

To write about a pizzeria in France is always difficult. We were devided in opinion about this place. Hence three stars. The setting is great, especially when you get to sit on the terrace. I but not my better half liked the pizza. Stay away from the Tapas plate though. Desert was great. Service was a bit slow.

Restaurant Olatua - St Jean de Luz

This place is a little bit off the main food streets in St Jean. We enjoyed the food a lot, especially after having had quite some disappointments before. Yet, I guess we will never warm too much to traditional Basque food. It s OK but not great. Entree was an excellent tuna on celery and a mediocre filled basque peppers. Main dish an assembly of pork meet including foot, rib, inner organ sausage (great) and small octopusses (also great). Desert was nothing special (pear in wine with ice cream). The Basque white wine was neglegible, unfortunately. Overall a nice dinner, we would go there again.

We have eaten twice in le dauphin. First mussels, then big crustacean platters. Both were good and a lot. The price to food ratio is great. For simple basic seafood a great place. And it comes with a view over the bay. Only one thing you should not try: their cocktails. But when we told them, they reduced the bill. Thus, if you don t want to go for haute cuisine, this is a great place for a dinner.

Café MAELU - Altstadt

Theatinerstraße 32, Ecke Theatinerpassage, 80333 München

09-04-2012

I thought that I could not be impressed anymore by something from the cake and torte department. But I was proven wrong when I visited Maelu on Theatinerstrasse in München for the first time. Even though I have been treated to quite some culinary delights by Sprüngli and others in Zurich, I have to admit that Maelu beats them all (and everything I have had before). It was quite a surprise. The little tortes they have on display are just fantastic. A sensory explosion on the tongue (not to speak of the eyes). If you visit Munich and you don´t have too much time, skip the beer and pork thing and pass by Maelu. Try the Pink Lady, Provence, Spring (I guess only now), Black Forest and my favorite Pistazie. And take some home. They even have courses and I admit, I am tempted…

La Maison Oppoca - Ainhoa

le bourg, 64250 Ainhoa

07-09-2011

A very nice upscale restaurant in the cute Basque town of Ainhoa. Nevertheless, they took us hikers in when we flipfloped by. Very moderate prices for the food they serve (dinner menu for Euro 25). We had starter: Watermelon soup with frozen mint/something like French Sushi main course: Squid with ink sauce/duck with organized macaroni gratin desert: apple pie/coffee ice cream. Great red wine from Bearn (still trying to find a way to order it). Definitely the best restaurant of our vacation. Webpage: http://oppoca.com/

Liston - Zürich

Nordbrücke 4, 8037 Zürich

22-04-2011

If you are looking for perfectly agreeable Greek food - Liston is your place. The biftekis and souvlakis are all on the menu. The house wine (red) can only be recommended. But best is the Greek yoghurt desert with honey and nuts. I thought Greek yoghurt had 10% fat. This had more - great taste! Ah, and the waiter drives Berlin - Munich in 2.5 hrs: The next Michael Schuhmacher!

Namaste - Bogenhausen

Rosenkavalierplatz 12, 81925 München

22-04-2011

You may on your last trip to India have thought that the food on the stop of your bus somewhere in the middle of nowhere was weird, dangerous, or simply outrageously hot. Forget about it. The place definitely deserved an article in the Gault Millaut haute cuisine guide.
I really thought about removing even the one Qype star from Namaste restaurant in Munich. To mention the good side: the ambiente is fine and the waiters try to treat you like a maharashtra. Nevertheless, it does no restaurant good to just open a tin/glass with ready-made sauce, de-freeze some tasteless chicken pieces and serve this to their customers. Better save your money for the next flight to India and go for the real stuff!

Restaurant Quellenhof - Kreuzlingen

Löwenstrasse 24, 8280 Kreuzlingen

22-04-2011

A very modern Mexican (but not only) restaurant. The fajitas were great, the beef provided for them just perfect. The - interestingly Greek - waiter was very friendly and supportive. A perfect place to get over a border control and customs trauma.
