Cottage Bakery - Abingdon
44 Bath Street, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 3QH
24-11-2008
The cottage bakery is just how you would imagine a traditional bakers shop to be. From the outside it has a bay window displaying some of their tempiting treats eg pasties, pies, cakes and pastries. The minute you step in the shop you can smell the freshly baked bread and you are confronted with a large range of mouthwatering cakes and pastries.
The shop itself is situated in Bath Sreet the old part of Abingdon near several other unusual shops and the famous Masons fabric store. Parking outside is not possible but the multi storey car park is quite near by.
The bakery also does an ordering service, they will make celebration cakes of any kind. They also sell a large assortment of cake decorating materials and also hire out fancy shaped cake tins.
They have a delightful coffee shop where you can get a gorgeous hot chocolate and choose a cake from the window if you you are lucky, they also do light lunches such as soups and baguettes all very tasy and competively priced. Well worth a visit.
Gainsborough Green Post Office - Abingdon
3 Reynolds Way, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 5JT
24-11-2008
Gainsborough Green post office is in the middle of a housing esate in South Abingdon, just the place for your local post office, saves a trip into town where you have to park quite a way from the post office, not very handy when returning parcles. It is situated in a line of other useful shops with ample parking outside.
The staff here are very professional, efficient and friendly and always offer the best service, whether you are just buying a stamp or sending 10 parcels!
They sell a wide range of post related products, envelopes, paper, sticky tape, brown paper and string.
This postoffice is a must to the local community and I hope it will not face closure in the near future.
Radley Post Office - Radley
Church Road, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 3AT
24-11-2008
A very small local post office a very important part of this small village in Oxon. It is tucked away in a row of houses and is actually only the front room of this semi detached house. The only drawback here is parking is difficult as it is right on the main through road at a bus stop.
The staff there are very friendly and helpful and take an active part in village life.
They sell all the usual stationery that you could possible need. A bonus here is that you can renew your road tax at this post office which is very handy. They still have the glass screens which makes it look like a proper post office and makes your business more private.
Peachcroft Farm - Abingdon
Peach Croft Farm Radley, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 2HP
24-11-2008
Peachcroft farm is situated in North Abingdon, with Radley College looking down on it. Very easy access and plenty of parking. It is a family run business.
Quite a lot of their farm has been turned over to pcik your own, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries some years broad beans and peas. They also grow potatoes which they sell in sacks all year round.
There is a small farm shop where they sell their own produce. They have a wonderful selection of unusual cheeses and bread which they are always happy for you to try. They also sell delicious home made cakes although everything here is quite pricey.
They have a small coffee shop where you can pick up a coffee and a slice of cake to a baguette or a bowl of delicious home made soup. Well worth a visit.
Frend & Co - Abingdon
3 West ST. Helen Street, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 5BL
23-11-2008
Frends are a high-end jewellers who are now based in West St Helen Street in Abingdon.
They have a lovely range of pretty shiny things, which are also quite pricey! I was given some vouchers for here and I was like a kid in a sweet shop choosing what I wanted, but even though I had quite a large value of vouchers they didnt stretch very far!
The service is excellent and cant be faulted.
Pets at Home - Abingdon
Fairacres Retail Park, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 1BY
23-11-2008
I often pop into Pets at Home if I am at the Fairacres retail park visiting Argos, homebase or one of the other stores there.
Pets at home is situated next to Contact electrical, and is a fairly big branch. They sell a huge array of animal food, accessories, hutches and cages, health care items etc. And of course they also sell a wide variety of small animals, from rabbits and guinea pigs to tiny little crabs!
They seem to be quite a responsible animal seller and do ask questions etc before selling you a pet. They also have an adoption centre where they rehome small animals people no longer want as well as display posters for larger animals such as dogs and cats.
Its a nice shop, well planned out and easy to find what you want, although the staff are very helpful if you cant!
F Knight & Sons - Abingdon
70-78 Ock Street, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 5DH
23-11-2008
There arent many shops like Knights still around! They are a cross between an old fashioned hardware store, and ironmongers and lots of other things!
You can buy everything you could possibly need there, from tools to screws and nails to electrical and plumbing supplies. They cater for tradesmen but also for the general public and they are so unbelievably helpful and will advise you on what you need for a certain job. You can also just buy one or two of something rather than a whole packet unlike its competitors homease and b and q!
They do key-cutting while you wait too.
There is plenty of parking at the side of the store, which is situated on Ock Street.
D J Harris - Chalfont St. Giles
93 Deanway, Chalfont St. Giles, Buckinghamshire HP8 4LH
23-11-2008
I used to visit this newsagents when my daughter was at university nearby.
It is a nice shop, with lots of newspapers and magazines to choose form and lots of tempting sweets and snacks!
You can order a newspaper or magazine to be delivered if you live locally, or order a magazine they dont normally stock to collect from the shop.
The staff are nice, really friendly.
Oh, and you can tell I dont smoke, they also sell cigarettes and lighters!
Superdrug - Didcot
Didcot, Oxfordshire OX11 8RG
23-11-2008
The Didcot in the Orchard Shopping centre in Didcot is a really good one. It’s a nice size and sells a good range of toiletries, perfume, medicines and gifts. They also have some snacks and chilled drinks.
The store is nicely laid out and easy to negotiate even with a buggy (or travel system as they are called now!) or wheelchair.
There never seem to be big queues and the staff are efficient and helpful.
Fantasia Bridal - Abingdon
34 Stert Street, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX14 3JP
23-11-2008
I went to Fantasia with my daughter as she is getting married soon, and I was very impressed by the large selection of dresses they had for her to try on. I know it was a long time since I got married, but there certainly wasnt such a huge choice back then!
The staff were delightful, very attentive and helpful. They were also very discreet which my daughter liked, as in a previous shop she had been to the lady helping her try the dresses on made comments about her body shape etc which she found quite upsetting!
Like most shops, the prices were high but that seems to be the going rate for a wedding dress these days!
