    The Greyhound Inn

A busy, pleasant pub with nice food at reasonable prices. I was with a party of 7 for Sunday lunch, & got there early enough to grab a table by the roaring fire (which, though in January, made the area too hot - the pub staff had to open the door - but it looked nice! This was also a less crowded part of the pub, I was suprised to see how packed other areas had got by the time we finished our meal. Service was pretty quick, considering how busy the place was, and our waiter outdid Gavin from Gavin and Stacey in the charming, helpful, lovely 'Essex boy’ stakes. Most of my party had the Sunday roasts, enormous platefuls with all the trimmings. I chose fishcakes from the lighter menu, very tasty. A good dessert menu too. Only downside was that the toilets were a long way away, up steep stairs, which wouldn’t be so good for the less mobile, or the more elderly patrons there for lunch - though there may have been a disabled toilet I didn’t see.
There look to be nice walks in the countryside around, though it was rather too wet for us to take much advantage of that.

  • Markhams Motor Body Repair Centre - High Wycombe

    Markhams Motor Body Repair Centre

1pxt mushtiff last updated on 21-01-2009:

Following a bump to the car, our insurance company sent it to Markhams for repair. A previous experience with a 'recommended repairer’ in Oxfordshire was a nightmare - never answered phones, did the work wrong, took forever - so I wasn’t looking forward to this. But Markhams were great. Easy to contact, friendly, quick to collect our car, do the repair, and bring it back. Provided a courtesy car & took time to explain where things were on it. I can’t get over having a car insurance company actually using a good 'recommended repairer’! Well done Churchill. Even better, our recent renewal notice from Churchill beat the best price from searching the internet without having to haggle. I don’t think that’s ever happened before.

    Oxford Double Glazing

1pxt mushtiff last updated on 08-01-2009:

What a pleasure to do business with this company! Oxford Double Glazing has been established over 40 years and have a good reputation. They say 80% of their work comes from recommendation, and a friend suggested them to me. They’ve just finished fitting 2 bays & 1 small window, and though I know it’s also about how the quality stands up long-term, the company so far have exceeded expectations. They weren’t the cheapest of the firms who quoted for me, but they were still very reasonable, and anyway, reliability, honesty and quality are worth paying a bit more for. The salesman who measured for the quote was straightforward and brief, with none of the dreaded sales tactics. I was able to visit their office in Marston to view the windows and ask questions. Once I’d accepted the quote, there was another visit to check measurements, and the work has been completed 8 weeks later (normally would be 4-6 weeks, but Christmas & New Year intervened). The fitters are employed by ODG, and paid by the job rather than the hour, so they can take time to do the job properly. They were friendly, polite and punctual, explained what they were doing, cleared up all their mess, and kept smiling despite working in sub-zero temperatures. They even fixed my curtain rails back up for me. Their office staff are also friendly, easy to contact, and were very helpful and understanding when a bank error unexpectedly bounced my deposit cheque. Highly recommended.

    Currys

1pxt mushtiff last updated on 26-12-2008:

Situated just off the Oxford ring road, with plenty of free parking, on a small retail park with Homebase and Carpet Right. it stocks TVs, computers, phones, cameras, small kitchen appliances, and white goods. Usually a big display of cookers, fridges, and TVs. A lot of staff on hand, though they vary in their level of knowledge and helpfulness. I bought a camera from here in the summer when I needed one quickly, but none of the shop assistants I dealt with seemed particularly interested in helping me make a choice. One didn’t even want to open the glass case to get the camera out for me to look at. Prices aren’t that competitive, though sometimes things are good value when on specific sale offer. There are 'Managers Specials’, too, though these are rarely tempting, 'ex-display tv with remote control missing, £5 off’ kind of thing. worth checking out the store if you’re after a specific item, but Curry’s needs to do more to turn interest into actual sales, in my opinion.

    Homebase

1pxt mushtiff last updated on 26-12-2008:

This Homebase is just off the Oxford ring road, and has plenty of free parking outside. It’s on a small retail park with Curry’s and Carpet Right. it stocks the usual range of things - diy, bathroom fittings, with a small display area for baths, toilets, suites etc. There is an outside garden area which always seems to be well-stocked. There are seasonal displays in the centre of the store, eg christmas things, outdoor furniture, sale items. This area often seems a bit tacky to me, a heap of stuff jumbled together. Prices always seem high compared to B & Q or Wilkinsons, even for the same things, eg Dulux paint. I find it a useful place to browse, but rarely buy anything there. Homebase often have special offers of 15% off for the weekend, which make it a bit more competitive price-wise.
