Sea Thai Restaurant - New York

114 North 6th Street, Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, 11211 New York

29-07-2009

Comfy, cool ambience and great food make this a must if you’re in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

We went early enough to miss the DJ and the fashionistas but enjoyed the eclectic decor, mood lighting and the pumping AC.

Especially liked the tasty appetizers and the specialty drinks - would also be a great spot for a quick nosh at the bar after vintage-shop-hopping around the corner. Prices very decent.

Hofladen und Wirtschaft Fünfschilling - Fischingen

Binzenerstr. 1, 79592 Fischingen

28-02-2009

This rustic restaurant/winery is located on a farm near Lörrach, about a quarter hour’s drive from Basel, in the lovely small town of Fischingen. The food is simple and delicious with a large selection of Baden specialities and more. I had the Asian-inspired field salad, tomato cream soup and the delectable rosemary bread - just awesome. My fellow diners ordered Flammenwaie (the local version of the Alsatian Flammkuchen), pork steak with roasted potatoes, homemade penne with sage butter and parmesan, and shrimp kabob with chard, and we drank the local wine that came straight from the barrel. Everything was really great and very inexpensive - six of us paid only €72, including appetizers and drinks.

There is a lounge area with fireplace, perfect for cocktails or coffee, and a store that sells local produce, bread, wine and jugs of apple cider. Everything comes from the attached farm. There is also a play area for the children and ample parking. The glass encased restaurant opens up in good weather, and there is additional patio seating.

This place is really a home run - don’t miss it if you’re in this neck of the woods!!

Hauptmarkt Imbiss - Innenstadt

Fünferplatz 4, 90403 Nürnberg

15-02-2009

This does not look like much from the outside - it is, in fact, simply a small storefront restaurant with limited seating. BUT, the food here is outstanding, and the portions are generous.

We started with two sushi rolls, which were presented really beautifully and tasted delicious. We were almost regretting having ordered full meals - we’d have been quite happy with just one or two more rolls. But we also had the duck with peanut sauce (huge portion and tasted fantastic) and red curry tofu with nice fresh veggies.

This was a great surprise as we hadn’t been expecting such a wonderful meal on a quick pit-stop, and the service and prices are super too.

Konditorei Hans-Karl Frei - Rothenburg

Galgengasse 39, Hotel-Konditorei-Café, 91541 Rothenburg

14-02-2009

The historic old town of Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber is such a delight, and this lovely Konditerei-Café is a lovely spot to sample something really special. The coffee options are delicious, but even more fun are the goodies. In addition to the typical array of German cakes (which are really super, by the way), this shop carries loads of homemade pralines and the local specialty - Rothenburger Schneeballen (snowballs), which is essentially a ball of fried pastry strips dipped in powdered sugar or chocolate. A great place to stop along the way…

There is also a hotel associated with this business, but we didn’t stay overnight.

Tour Eiffel - Eiffel Tower

Paris

14-02-2009

Yes, it almost seems silly to review such a must-see landmark, but I just wanted to add that I was surprised to find how truly remarkably beautiful it actually is in person - which is not always how one feels when seeing at last something that we’ve seen in pictures and films all our lives. Great fun and a special feeling!

Jam'Sacs - Opera

43 Boulevard Haussmann, 75009 Paris

14-02-2009

After searching for a new handbag at Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, I happened upon this little shop inside the Metro station - I got a super deal here on a real leather handbag - just big enough for a Mac Book Air and very stylish/classic.

There is a rather large selection of bags for such a small shop, and the woman who waited on me was a real sweetheart. I continue to be really happy with the purchase.

Malongo Café - Latin Quarter

50 Rue St André des Arts, 75006 Paris

14-02-2009

This is a lovely little spot for a cappuccino and a delicious snack - had the brownie, which was almost too much for two of us!! The coffee was great, the staff friendly and the ambiance quite nice.

Free wireless Internet is available on an open network - no password necessary! Makes it even better!

Poonchai - Copenhagen

Istedgade 1, 1650 København

14-02-2009

I found the food at this Thai place only mediocre, and the service was also not so great - but the prices are pretty good, and the location is very convenient. It’s just behind the main station near a number of the budget hotels. I wouldn’t recommend it for a date or special occasion, but it’s not bad for a decent meal.

RizRaz Blue - Copenhagen

Kompagnistr. 20, 1208 København

14-02-2009

This restaurant is known for its all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet, costing just over €10. The food is great and includes lots of hot and cold dishes, including hummus, tons of salads, pizza and lasagna. Come hungry because you’ll want to try a little of everything! Centrally located, so try to come a bit off hours to be sure to get a table - outdoor seating in good weather.

RizRaz Brown - Copenhagen

Store Kannikkestr. 19, 1169 København

14-02-2009

This restaurant has an amazing vegetarian buffet for just over €10 - a great value and lots of delicious options. There are hot and cold dishes, including lots of salads - favorites like hummus, veggies, pizza, lasagna. Come hungry because it’s all-you-can-eat, and you’ll want to try everything!

There are two locations - this one is between the Round Tower and the Church of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke) on a very pleasant, quiet side street. The other location is on a busier street parallel to the Stroget.
