Voodoo Bar - Edinburgh

8 Torphichen Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 8DU

18-11-2008

The voodoo bar still needs a bit of attention decorwise, and the function suite downstairs is like going into a working mens club in the 70’s but that aside, it is a warm and friendly place to go AND it’s not part of a chain! Catering mainly for people in their 20’s and early 30’s it has club nights and comedy nights, but doesn’t forget the students! The staff are all really friendly and it’s a place where if you go more than once everybody will indeed know your name! Cheers!

First Coast - Edinburgh

97-101 Dalry Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH11 2AB

18-11-2008

First coast is a modern Scottish restaurant just to the west of Haymarket in Edinburgh which makes it ideal for a delicious bite to eat without having to go into town. The menu is seasonal and the produce used is of the best quality. Simple, yet stylish decoration makes it a really welcome addition to the west of the city. Lunch and early evening menus are more than reasonable and the service was great on my last visit.

A Room In The West End - Edinburgh

26 William Street, the west end, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 7NH

18-11-2008

A room in the West End is a cellar restaurant beneath the great Teuchters pub. It is off the beaten track and mainly frequented by Edinburghers and as a result the menu doesn’t pander to tourists palettes and is constantly changing and seasonal. The menus are obviously written daily as they are on paper and not bound in wipe clean plastic! Always a good sign! The food has a very modern Scottish feel to it and it is all cooked really well. A great place to re-visit as your never sure whats going to be on the menu, but you know it’ll be good.
It also has BYOB for a modest fee though their wine list is pretty good.

Matcheff that sounds nice, ive only been to a room in leith and that was fab but maybe I will try this one now

Real Mary Kings Close - Edinburgh

2 Warriston's Close, High Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1PG

18-11-2008

Mary Kings close, as many people point out, not very long. But there is so much history surrounding that close, and not only are you shown the very impressive remains of how people lived on that street, you are also taken through a warren of other underground rooms and streets to boot. Taken into the past with a guide in period costume gives a real insight into the true stories of the people who lived there over 400 years ago. It is not cheap, but having said that, it is no more expensive than many attractions in Edinburgh. The only cheesy bit for me was the ghost story!!!!!

Daniel's Bistro - Edinburgh

88 Commercial Street,, Edinburgh, Scotland EH6 6NF

18-11-2008

Despite having so much going for it such as a great location and friendly staff, Daniels is a great dissapointment. I took my parents to lunch there and felt very embarrassed with what we got. All the portions were far too big and there were intimidatingly huge piles of sloppy ratatouille on every dish with a slab of creamy dauphinoise potatoes which all mixed together on the plate to create a slurry. I had a steak which was well cooked, but I wish that there was just a few potatoes and a little salad on the side. It seems they are killing their customers with kindness.

Petit Paris - Edinburgh

38-40 Grassmarket, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2JU

18-11-2008

I have been going to petit paris for over 4 years and when I first started going there it was a real treat with it’s rustic French menu and quintisentially French decor and layout. The food was simple but great and the service on the whole very good. However, in recent times when I have been I couldn’t help feeling a little dissapointed. The menu was newly printed but not one thing was different and I really lacked any enthusiasm to chose my meal. Although they have specials I found that these were very samey too. I know that restaurants have to stick to tried and tested favourites, but the food seems to have become no longer the star of the show, unfortunately.
