Museum of Science and Industry - Manchester

Museum of Science and Industry Liverpool Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M3 4FP

18-01-2008

A celebration of manchester as the world's first industrial city, this place covers six arces and includes the oldest passenger railway station anywhere. Thoroughly modern and with the revamped 'Xperiment' section this could amuse you for hours. Static tours here include a trip through the sewers (with authentic aromas) and a massive hall packed with planes and space stuff. There's a good view of the adjacent coronation street set from the 'Xperiment' - they always film outside on mondays if you want to be a voyeur on the action.

Urbis Museum - Manchester

Cathedral Gardens, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 3BG

18-01-2008

The museum of urban life is a stunning architectural addition to the already varied manchester skyline. This contemporary place challenges the very notion of museums, not always with success. Permanent displays examine the city and the urban experience.

The city's dedicated tv station, channel m has mover here and visitors will soon be able to see behind the scenes and witness live news programmes in the making. Highly recommended for anyone in manchester to visit. You might have to pay to see special exhibtions.

Imperial War Museum North - Manchester

Trafford Wharf Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M17 1TZ

18-01-2008

With the eerie excess of the aluminium that is the imperial war museum north is one of the city's treasures. The soaring 29 metre tower is accessed by a peculiar angled lift ride, but it's worth and for the view over the city and salford quays. Focusing on real people's experiences of war, this place doesn't preach but the strikingly audio/visual display certainly makes you question your conceptions of war especially in the world we live in when governments are so eager to use force on both innocent people and on other weaker governments. Highly recommended.

Chinese Arts Centre - Manchester

Market Buildings, 7 Thomas Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 1EU

18-01-2008

Manchester has the secon largest chinese population in the UK and this place does its bit to reflect the city's cultural diversity. Dedicated to the promotion of contemporary chinese art and interpretation of the countrys culture, this smart addition to manchester's gallery assortment also boasts a terrific teahouse.

Highly recommended for any manchester resident or for anyone visiting manchester for the first time, make this place a priority to visit.

Netty I will try this out when I am in Manchester. I love cultural diversity. Chinese art is very interesting.

Manchester Art Gallery - Manchester

Art Gallery Mosley Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M2 3HZ

18-01-2008

Manchester's definitive gallery positioned in the hub of the city is the possessor of a stunning collection, including work from Renaissance and dutch masters and victorian works in the form of various master pieces.

But more modern works by David Hockney, Bridget Riley, and Francis Bacon can also be found here. There's a craft and design gallery and a selection of flaunting Manchester diverse artistic achivements of past and present, plus a healthy flow of temporary exhibitions.

Afflecks Palace - Manchester

52 Church Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 1PW

18-01-2008

This place is famous especially among student for its vintage and rare items that you will not find in any high street shop. From fashion to make up to hair dressing, this place has it all. It's very famous for fancy dress outfits of just about any nature.

A rabbit warren of stalls offers clothes, (excellent vintage selection), music posters, body piercing, fetish wear, beads, sweets, you name it. A ramble round will turn up dozens of unexpected gems and can be very addictive.

The Zoo - Manchester

Grosvenor Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 7EW

18-01-2008

This is one lovely place, nicely tucked away off oxford road on grosvenor street. This place boasts some of the best student nights in manchester where drinks are incredibly cheap. It's location is so convenient especially for students who live in the halls of residence around it that you can pretty much drink as much as you can and still be able to stumble back to your student pad.

This is one of those places that you will always look back to long after you've graduated and it will always remind you of what student life was all about because it defines what student nights out are all about. This place is so remarkable, every thing about it, the atmosphere, the music and the people. It's legendary.

5th Avenue - Manchester

121 Princess Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 7AG

18-01-2008

Located just off Oxford Road, this place has become the epicentre for many student hang outs, 5th ave as its known among the locals sees itself as manchester's number one indie experience. This is pure, unadulterated indie rock n roll in spirit and in execution.

Posers need not apply because 5th ave, is dark and on the right side of grimy, gritty, without being to scummy. There are no V.I.P areas, velvet adorned sitting areas and no champagne dahlings. Music, cheap promos and a great atmosphere is what 5th ave is all about and these are hosted in a variety of nights. Monday madness, Fusion wednesdays and back by popular demand on thursday. Highly recommended.

42nd Street - Manchester

2 Bootle Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M2 5GU

18-01-2008

42nd street or (42s as the kook kids call it) is at the posh end of the markert when it comes indie rock n roll. Based just off deansgate on bootie street, this club is massively popular and unless you get there by 10.30pm, you will be looking at a sizeable queue.

Still its worth it when you get in. There are two bars to your sensibly priced drinks from and the dancefloor is slightly more sophisticated than 5th ave. The atmosphere is usually relaxed, rarely any trouble. There are a number of seated areas where you can hang with your pips and re-energise with gallons of cheap vodka redbull. The music is impeccable - a wide ranging affair of indie rock n roll tunes from both sides of the atlantic, again with special adulation being reserved for home grown manc songs. Highly recommended

teasers bar and club - Manchester

231-233 deansgate, Manchester, Greater Manchester M3 4EN

18-01-2008

As far as refurbishments go, teasers has been the monster of them all with over a million pounds sunk into this one. If money cannot buy you love, it can surely buy you a state of the art, exotic, interior, designed and built by a team specially flown in from amsterdam.

The dynamic light ensures that every beat and rhythm is reiterated visually. In fact, the team is responsible for putting together the original teasers brand in miami a venue frequented by stars such as p.diddy. The security are very strict about dress code and age. Make sure you dress smartly and bring your i.d as well.
