Sea Of Spice - Rottingdean
55 Marine Drive, Brighton BN2 7HQ
10-05-2012
Went here on Tuesday with my boyfriend, there was one couple inside eating and nobody else. We were seated quickly by a young gent who seemed nice enough, our drinks came quickly and he left us alone to browse the menu. Must have been watching us well as he came back promptly once we’d decided, answered our questions about the food and made good recommendations.
Las Iguanas - Brighton
7-8 Jubilee Street, The Jubilee Library, Brighton BN1 1GE
26-02-2012
I went here on Saturday for the first time. We went in around 4pm, there were a few people but not too many about. We got directed to the bar area which is extremely small. There was only one table left when we arrived in that area so we sat there and had to take stalls from other tables (there were 8 of us or so). The cocktail offers were good, it was two for one on a few tasty options, and they had brilliant virgin cocktail options too. I was quite happy with my cherry fizz drinks and they disappeared quickly!
It filled up quickly after 5pm, it’s obviously a popular place. There were lots of people around but apart from straining to hear a little it wasn’t really noticeable considering how small the place is. I’d go back, though I don’t think I’d eat there, not with the restaurants nearby.
The Chilli Pickle - Brighton
17 Jubilee Street, Brighton BN1 1GE
26-02-2012
I visited here on Saturday afternoon with a group of women and loved it. We had a lovely time, the staff were attentive when needed and didn’t bug us. All of us had wonderful dishes, there were a lot of veggie options (both vegan and vegetarian), I had the Masala Dosa, a dish that I love and have only ever seen in a handful of other restaurants before so I was ecstatic to find it on the menu at Chilli Pickle. I hear that the fish and beef options were also amazing, though they kept topping up our wine supply so I cannot remember what was said about the other dishes ;)
I was a little disappointed by the size of my dish, it wasn’t very filling but then I have a very big appetite and this isn’t the type of restaurant that caters for very big appetites! The meal sizes seemed fair for a trendy place, the price relatively low for good food in Brighton (at least the veggie options were all under £8ish) and the flavours of the food were fantastic.
I’d definitely recommend that people go here and I am so glad that I finally managed to eat here, I’ll definitely be returning!
China China Restaurant - Brighton
35 Preston Street, Brighton BN1 2HP
26-02-2012
For what this place is, it’s good. The road it’s situated on is full of the low-key, greasy spoon options, mostly Chinese places I think but a few others too.
I will warn you now, it’s a cash only place, so double check how much you have before going in! On the other hand, it’s quite cheap for Brighton and we came out having paid less than £12 for two massive meals.
It was quite busy when we went in as it was early Saturday evening, lots of families and older teens about, they seated us straight away though. They seemed to have a decent range of options available, quite a few ‘veggie’ options, some contained shrimp sauce and I’m dubious about how vegetarian the other ‘veggie’ meals were but they offered a handful of them.
We placed our order within ten minutes of arriving and it got to our table ten minutes (at most) after ordering. I had the sweetcorn with beancurd and boiled rice (nice and simple!), my partner had the chicken curry. My food was quite bland but nice enough, very filling as it was a huge portion! Not brilliantly presented but again, it’s a greasy spoon so it wasn’t to be expected. My partner’s chicken curry looked fantastic and apparently tasted great too. The staff were curt but we weren’t too bothered by that, didn’t expect stellar service.
Overall it’s good for a quick option before evening drinks (or after lunchtime ones!) and is very generous with portion sizes for the price, but don’t expect something amazing, it’s bog standard food at bog standard prices a sort walk from Brighton centre.
Spring Barn Farm Park - Lewes
Spring Barn Farm, Kingston Road, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 3ND
18-02-2012
Spring Barn Farm Park is a lovely, child-centred farm based on the outskirts of Lewes. Though I haven’t yet tried it, it’s probably walking distance from central Lewes and it’s only a twenty odd minute drive from the Dean towns and the far end of Hove so it’s location is superb.
The staff are absolutely lovely, very calm and open to questions from the little ones. The staff not directly involved in the animal care are also brilliant with children and very friendly.
The farm itself is great, the hill is a workout though! A nice variety of animals are available to see and the petting/feeding sessions are frequent. The children I look after are really looking forward to spring and seeing all of the baby animals! (They do have a couple of gorgeous piglets there at the moment, well worth popping by to see them! Very cute!)
There are some brilliant time fillers just in case the children get bored between feeding sessions and running around to see the animals. They’ve got some bouncing pillows outside which look like brilliant fun, a zip wire, some pedal go karts for the older ones, a little maze and a couple of forts to scale and slides to go down.
Inside the barn are some mini-tractors for the kids to pedal around, a lovely wooden play area and large building blocks available. There are also benches both inside and out to eat (and a restaurant/cafe on site to get food from if you have come empty handed!)
All in all, a great place for a day with the kids or to pick up high-quality supplies!
Creperie Angelie - Brighton
9 Duke Street, Brighton BN1 1AH
20-12-2011
I love the crepes here and loved coming to the little window to get them, but imagine how surprised I was when I discovered that they’d made it into a little shop! I thought it’d be great, so me and the boyfriend went inside.
Same great crepes but because they wanted a shop of sorts they’ve somewhat ruined the experience a bit if you choose to eat in. You’re probably best off getting the crepes and then leaving to enjoy them on the streets of Brighton, which is how they should be enjoyed! Perfect on a winters day.
Montezumas Chocolates - Brighton
15 Duke Street, Brighton BN1 1AH
20-12-2011
Montezuma’s is my favourite chocolate shop, before going in there I was a huge fan of Hotel Chocolat which I still like, but the more interesting choices available at Montezuma’s make them better.
The staff are all brilliant in there, every time I’ve gone in they’ve only tried to get my attention if it looked like I needed it (as opposed to other stores who seem to pounce the second you walk in), offered to get tasters from out back for me and are very informative about their products which was handy when buying for vegan friends!
Iydea - Brighton
17 Kensington Gardens, Brighton BN1 4AL
15-10-2011
After reading way too much into this place I decided to have some lunch there. When I arrived there was still some choice of food available, and they were replenishing the counter though! The place was very busy, the staff friendly and all smiles and the last two tables outside got snapped up as I was ordering. So, I ordered to go and took my Nacho Bake (with two sides and two toppings, green beans with garlic, roasted carrots with spices, sour cream and some coriander topping) down to the Pavilion Gardens.
The carrots were a bit too hard for my liking but the spices worked well with them, the green beans were cooked perfectly, very yummy! The best bit was definitely my Nacho Bake though. I was tempted to ask for more in the shop as it didn’t look like enough to fill, but the portion size was perfect, a lovely filling sweet potato bake with delicate spice and it was perfect with some sour cream.
I will definitely be going back!
English Heritage: Cirencester Amphitheatre - Cirencester
Cirencester Amphitheatre, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 2BX
13-10-2011
Fun to roll down the hills, also good fun in winter for sledging! If you have kids to take with you of course…
It’s actually a really beautiful place tucked into a corner of Ciren. It took ages to find it but once we did it was worth it.
The Roman Baths (Aqua Sulis) - Bath
Bath BA1 1LZ
13-10-2011
Interesting place to visit, be sure to schedule a whole afternoon for it to get a good look around! And read the signs, the telephone tour guide thing can get very boring.
