Boy & Barrell - Mexborough
72 High Street, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 9AU
17-12-2008
There are many regulars who love this pub but I think it’s awful. The staff are unpleasant as are the majority of the regulars who are drunks and prop up the bar all day.
Hidden away back from the shops on the main shopping street in Mexborough, the Barrell as it’s known locally is really uninviting.
Their trade picks up around Christmas time but to be honest the beer isn’t all that great and with the new Wetherspoons opening up the road, smaller pubs like this will soon go out of business.
Rotherham Bodyworks - Kilnhurst
Thomas Street, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 5TF
17-12-2008
I used this garage when someone went into my car. Many insurance companies recommend them to their customers.
The staff who work there are great, very friendly and give a fair price for repairs. I had a fair few dints in and around my car and they advised me on how much it would be and my options - for a quick fix and also the more expensive long term.
They turns things around pretty fast and I got my car back in a couple of days, good as new.
There aren’t many body shops in the area so this one is popular. I’d recommend you get a quote from here if you need any body repairs to your car
Majeed Bros - Mexborough
55b Adwick Road, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 0AG
17-12-2008
A convenience store which is quite run down now. They are good for alcohol and cigarettes but day to day groceries are a bit thin on the ground. The freezer section is quite good though.
They also offer snacks such as crisps, nuts and chocolate bars. The man who owns it is friendly enough and always has a bit of a joke with the customers.
The outside could do with a tidy up and paint job as could the inside. It suffers from being next to the GT News and across from the beeroff Cheers. However, it’s been there for years and shows no signs of closing down!
Micks Shoe Repairs - Mexborough
12 High Street, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 9AS
17-12-2008
Micks is the only cobblers left in Mexborough now. They offer good service and a quick while you wait service.
They do the usual shoe repairs, heel replacement, sole replacement, key cutting as well as selling accessories for keys, laces and cleaning products for shoes.
The prices are cheaper than the larger shoe repair chains. The staff always advise you on what would be the best for you and seem very knowledgeable.
Open Kitchens - Mexborough
115 Adwick Road, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 0BG
17-12-2008
A Chinese and Thai takeaway on Adwick Road. They have a sister shop in West Melton too. The food is always nice from here - they cook it in front of you if you go in and wait.
The delivery times are pretty good though you always have to wait longer on the weekend. The menu is typical of a chinese takeaway offering most dishes you’d find anywhere else.
The staff are nice and friendly and throw a few freebies in if you order over a certain amount.
Star Inn - Mexborough
Harlington Road, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 0DF
17-12-2008
The Star in Mexborough is a Sam Smith’s pub so there’s not a lot of choice in the lagers and beers. However, it’s a very popular small pub and there’s a decent beer garden in the back.
It’s a very parochial pub though, the type where everyone turns around and looks at you when you walk in! We’ve even got asked to move seats before because we were sitting in a regulars place!
It gets quite busy on a Sunday after lunch and families are welcome.
Kings Head - Swinton
3 Rockingham Road, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 8EE
17-12-2008
A quiet pub on the main road in Swinton. The Kings Head is average sized but they serve lovely bar meals. The Sunday lunches are really nice and good value for money.
They have a bit of a beer garden, a private car park at the back and quiz nights. It has a lot of local customers but the staff are always very welcoming and the drinks are good prices.
It’s not a very lively pub but nice to go for a drink and something to eat.
Whites Coaches - Kilnhurst
Thomas Street, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 5TF
17-12-2008
Whites is well-known locally as the main coach company in the area. They do a lot of school runs and trips and there own short-break holidays.
You can also book the minibuses and coaches for private hire. I’ve done so for a stag night a couple of years back. They have decent prices and if you can fill a coach, split the cost between you it works out fairly inexpensive.
The staff are friendly, take your details then ring you back the same day. They ask for a deposit - 50% I think but that’s expected everywhere.
The coaches aren’t really luxury and some need a bit of a revamp but they get you from a to b no problem!
Hard Rock Cafe - Beijing
North Dongsanhuan Road 8, Chaoyang District, 100004 Beijing
16-12-2008
I’m a fan of the Hard Rock Cafe chain and this one is no exception. The decor and large screens with music videos add to the brilliant atmosphere.
The staff here were very friendly and our food came quickly. The menu is extensive and great if you want Western food in the midst of the Chinese food.
However, the food cost a fortune! I know the chain can be expensive everywhere but we were very surprised that the bill came to over £100 for 2 people - that’s 2 main courses and 2 drinks! We didn’t have any sides, starters or desserts. We deduced that this was due to the Olympics and the price of Western food being increased.
Great restaurant though! You just couldn’t afford to eat here every day!
James Smith you came to the country with possibly the greatest culinary heritage in the world… to its capital city which boasts over 100,000 restaurants… an entire continent of flavours available to you… veritable feasts for cheaper than you will find anywhere in your own country… and you eat in hard rock cafe?!
11 February 2009
guybtaylor and James Smith already hit the point.
Even at the Hard Rock Cafe they have a menue which shows prices. you probably ordered after looking to the menue. So there is no reason to be surprised.........
And quite frankly, there is nothing on the menue and drink list, which makes the bill over 100 pounds (101 or 199???) as described by you.

Al Murad D.I.Y - Mexborough
30 Swinton Road, Mexborough, South Yorkshire S64 9JB
16-12-2008
A well-known local chain, Al Murad’s is great to have locally for DIY supplies.
They have some really nice paints and wallpapers, all the usual brands. They also sell floor tiles, laminate and wall tiles. They also stock the usual DIY decorating accessories.
The prices are decent though sometimes cannot compete with the larger chains like B&Q and Homebase. However, the staff are very helpful and will give advice wherever they can.
