I like this place. It's good for watching football, with or without children, has a decent selection of food, lovely beer garden (now with added playground area), nice staff, and the standard Fullers selection of beer. And last time I visited was on a Saturday after a rather excessive evening of drinking on the Friday, but my Guinness still went down very well, which has to be good sign.

Phil Chambers Are you visiting pubs full time now?

Kings Arms Sports Bar - London

It's got a TV and friendly enough staff, but when we visited on cup final day we were very disappointed in the food options (burger, sausage or scampi with chips, basically). We didn't want anything too fancy but at least a sandwich or two might have been nice. So go there for a drink and to watch the football, but that's about it.

Island Bar & Restaurant - Reading

Pipers Island, Bridge Street, Caversham, Reading, Berkshire RG4 8AH

This is a restaurant/bar situated in the middle of the Thames in Reading (by Caversham bridge), with access via quite a few steps down from the bridge. We were pleasantly surprised at how friendly it was. We visited on a Saturday afternoon with a few kids in tow and half-expected to be made to feel like we weren't really the kind of customers they were after, but the staff were all very welcoming. Selection of moderately expensive beer, reasonably priced wine, and although we didn't try any food the menu was pretty tempting. Nice outside seating area on the river too.

Great range of beer (and cider, and all sorts), mostly bottled but some interesting stuff on tap too. It is indeed pretty small but we managed to get seats for 5 of us somehow after wandering in at about 8 on a Thursday, so don't give up hope. Friendly, helpful bar staff who were very willing to give recommendations for new things to try. Obviously you'll pay a bit more for drinks you can't get in many places, but it averaged out at just over £4 per drink we had, for a variety of speciality choices, so not too bad really especially considering the location.

Pretty nice place, a bit out of the way so never seems to get too busy. Tables outside, food, beer, all the standard pub stuff really. One of those places that doesn't seem too inspiring, but I'm glad it's there.

Phil Chambers What's the ale situation then?

otama A few of the usual, Pride and a couple of others I think. Nothing exciting but it does exist.

Not really as big as its website makes it seem, but nice enough. Decent selection of the usual animals, with opportunities to feed them (including bottle feeding some of the lambs/kids if you're there at the right time). Indoor play barn and an outdoor playground too. Wouldn't say it was somewhere you'd be likely to spend the whole day, but a good place to visit for a few hours.

Stayed last week for a few days, three adults and two children in one of the 3-bed caravans. The caravan itself was lovely, very clean and well-equipped. The facilities were pretty impressive too, indoor swimming pool with a separate baby pool, nice little playground in a big safe park, shop selling all the essentials, and a pub/bar that I'm rather ashamed to say we didn't actually get round to going in.

I'd definitely recommend this as a place to stay with young children. Older kids might get a bit bored on site but it's only 20 minute walk into Swanage. Probably fine even if you don't feel like taking children on holiday with you too, but in that case you've really got no excuse not to check out the pub.
