The King and Queen - Wendover

South Street, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire HP22 6EF

10-04-2009

On some other review sites you will see glowing reviews for this dive - don’t be fooled. Never have I ever known of a pub where the reviews have been so much the polar opposite of this one. It’s horrible. Not the building itself, but the insular, unfriendly regulars. The food is terrible, the beer is kept poorly, and the staff were unfriendly. And not just to me, but to other friends who have been in there as well. In one word: AVOID.

The Doric Arch - Euston

1 Eversholt St, Euston, London NW1 1DN

22-11-2008

Most pubs in the vicinity of big train stations like Euston are pretty grim, but the Doric bucks this trend. OK, so if you like acres of cream paint and tasteful paintings and modern furnishings you are going to hate this place, but if you are a train spotter or someone who just likes a good proper boozer then the Doric is for you! There’s quite a lot of memoribilia from London’s transport system hung on the walls which are interesting, even if you aren’t the sort of person who spends hours hanging around in your anorak around train stations!

This pub has a really wide range of tasty real ales, on tap and in bottles. This is a Fuller’s pub and their seasonal ales are always nice. The range changes regularly, lending itself to many return visits - as my boyfriend says, nothing says I love you more than joint membership to CAMRA so we travel here quite often.

To be honest, I’ve never eaten here but I’ve been told the food is reasonable honest pub grub and nicer than what you’d get in the station itself.

Well worth a visit, even if you aren’t planning to travel anywhere from Euston.

The Bucks Goat Centre Animal Farm - Stoke Mandeville

Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire HP22 5XJ

20-11-2008

We come here at least once a year to visit the baby goats. OK, so we are all over thirty but this is OK, isn’t it?

Buy a little bag of animal feed, run past the creepy tanks full of spiders and snakes and then you’ll find several pens full of the cutest animals - if you’ve got kids be prepared for them to declare themselves veggie from now on! There are goats and pigs and even llamas!

They have a lovely cafe here as well, with rockbottom prices. We have had lovely sandwiches made fresh, followed by slices of home-made cake and lashings of ginger beer!

If it’s rainy, make sure you bring your wellies - it can be a bit muddy. And some handwipes if you get fussy about goat saliva all over your hands. But for a some time spent playing with goats that only come up to your knees - it’s well worth the visit!

The Walter Rothschild Zoological, Museum - Tring

Akeman Street,, Tring, Hertfordshire HP23 6AP

20-11-2008

This is one of my favourite places in the whole world! I’ve been here four times now, and I am still finding out new things and enjoying the greatest hits!

This is a great place to bring your kids, but you don’t need mini humans to make this a great day out. I’ve come here with groups of friends in our thirties, and I think we have more fun than any kids we could find to bring along. But if you have kids, there’s activities they can follow in each room so they learn at the same time as laughing about the funny looking birds and screeching at the insects.

A highlight for me is the Mexican fleas in the upstairs gallery (look inside the wooden cupboards by the entrance of the room) who are dressed up in traditional costumes!

My personal favourite is a seal that looks incredibly like David Gest.

The cafe is good for a snack and a cup of coffee afterwards, though normal museum prices - they have to make their money somewhere!

West Brewery Bar Restaurant - Glasgow

Templeton Building, Glasgow Green, Glasgow, Scotland G40 1AW

20-11-2008

I first visited this venue on a really hot summer’s day in August and there were families and friends sprawled all over the grass outside this lovely restaurant and microbrewery.

I’ve travelled all over Europe in the search for good quality beer - and I needn’t have travelled much further than Glasgow. Depending on the time of year there is such a wide range of styles of real ales to choose from, all brewed on site.

The focus tends to be towards the Teutonic, with lots of wheat-beers - they go perfectly with the German food on offer on the menu. The schnitzel was to die for, and I forget what my boyfriend had as his plate was cleared in seconds and I didn’t get a chance to taste what he’d chosen. But from the look on his face he was blissfully happy so it must have been good!

The decor is very Arts and Crafts - lots of lovely clean lines, and the venue is divided into several sections, some of which I think can be hired out for functions.

The staff here were run off their feet during our visit, but they were friendly and happy to help.

Well worth a visit!

Stereo - Glasgow

20 Renfield Lane, Glasgow, Scotland G2 5AR

20-11-2008

I come here every time I am in Glasgow! If you’ve got “difficult” veggie mates with you then they’ll find no complaint here - the food is fantastic, with everything from delicious three bean chilli to tapas to gorgeous calzone - all unsullied by the touch of meat (and lots of vegan stuff too!). The soup I had last time, pumpkin, was the best I’ve ever had!

The range of beers here is excellent, from bottled real ales in the fridge to a wide range of often German beers on tap.

This is a great place to see bands - lots of funky indie goodness - everything from twee to screaming metal catered for!

This is a lovely little oasis in the middle of the Glasgow city centre and a nice place to seek refuge from the wind, rain and cold.

The John Snow - Soho

39 Broadwick Street, London W1F 9QJ

20-11-2008

The John Snow is a Samual Smiths pub which means you know you are going to find inexpensive, excellent quality pints. This pub can be very busy with office workers at lunchtime and after work for the above reasons, but it’s not normally difficult to find a nice corner for you and your mates at other times such as the weekend. I love the little nooks and crannies in this place, it’s quite easy to hide away from people you don’t really want to see!

If you ask nicely and want to drink outside during the summer, the bar staff will give you a plastic glass and you can puff away on your cancer sticks to your heart’s discontent!

The Lamb - Bloomsbury

94 Lamb's Conduit Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1N 3LZ

20-11-2008

This pretty little pub took some finding - it’s tucked away in a warren of back streets in Covent Garden. But once you find it you are in for a real treat! As other posters have said, there are so many original features to gaze upon whilst you drink something from the good choice of real ales and beers - the choices are different, for example there are Japanese lagers on tap - and this may be why it’s a little more pricey.

The food here is quite OK, but I’m more likely to come here for a drink and a bowl of nuts than a meal, there are plenty of proper restaurants in the area to choose from if you want a feed. The place can be very, very busy but you are pretty likely to be able to find a nice table or at the very least there’s a nice original bar to rest your pints on.

Well worth a visit!

Eden shopping centre - High Wycombe

High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire HP11 1QA

20-11-2008

I love this new shopping centre - when in the past I may have gone down to London to buy a new outfit I am happy to get my boyfriend to drive me over to High Wycombe and park him in the cinema whilst I go lookng for that perfect dress! OK, so maybe he quite likes it here as well, there is a good range of men’s clothing stores as well.

The M&S and Debenams are really large and have most of the ranges you’ll find in the London flagship stores. There is also your usual Topshop/H&M/Gap/New Look range. What I like most is that I can go buy some bits and bobs and then go to Yo Sushi and have a nice meal to build up my energy again for more shopping in this lovely, clean, modern shopping centre.

Forge Boutique - Wendover

3 High Street, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire HP22 6DU

20-11-2008

This is a really odd little boutique. The clothes aren’t as expensive as Nadirose has said above, in fact they’re actually very cheap. I think that if I had the time to dig around the racks I’d find some really lovely items but there is just SO MUCH stuff in here, and a lot of it is what was fashionable a year back. And the window design is just plain odd - I don’t want to buy clothes in a shop where the dresses are stretched and pinned into such strange shapes in the window - I’d worry that I might end up buying something that’s been treated that way.

HOWEVER - this IS the place for girls to get their prom dresses. They have a very wide range of the perfect clothes for your teenage wannabe princess on her special day. Quite rightly they make a good feature of this aspect of their trade.

In conclusion: come here for funky one-off items you might not find on the high street at a great price, just be prepared to dig for them.
