Marcopolo Bakery - Grove

Unit 6 Elms Farm Business Park, Grove, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 7PD

09-02-2013

I'd never been here before until today. The bakery is in an industrial unit which includes a counter with all the lovely breads laid out. It is great to see the bakery in action and the huge bags of flour. I fancied some Mediterranean-style bread so I popped in on the off chance and what a selection! Shame bread isn't something that keeps that long otherwise I would have bought much more. The bread was delicious and I shall definitely be back.

Labelle Vie - Grove

3 Savile Way, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 0PT

29-09-2011 (updated on 02-02-2013)

UPDATED FEB 2013:

I have been here twice now.

This is a very friendly salon. Had a cut and blow dry and was very pleased with the results. The price was a few pounds more that I have paid elsewhere but I thought it was worth it.

My second visit was for half head highlights and again I was very pleased with the results. The stylist was lovely and friendly and easy to chat to. She offered some good colour suggestions and hair care tips. The result was excellent.

Segais Hair Design - Wantage

6 Grove Street, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 7AA

22-04-2012 (updated on 02-02-2013)

UPDATED FEB 2013:

I was recommended Segais (albeit their Didcot branch). I have been here about four times.

On the first occasion, the reception was very helpful who fully explained their pricing structure which meant I got the option of choosing a cheaper less experienced person or conversely a more experienced and more expensive stylist. I went for someone in the middle which cost about £35 for a cut and finish. I was pleased with the result as I like a stylist to suggest ideas for me which they did. It was my first visit so I got 50% off, plus I’d booked an appointment on a Weds so got a further 10% off – excellent deal. (Mon-Weds 10% off).

I went back to this stylist again on a second occasion and was pleasantly surprised to be offered a glass of wine as an alternative to tea.

On my third visit I found out my previous stylist had left so I had someone else for a cut and finish. This stylist again was friendly and offered suggestions.

On my fourth visit though I was left disappointed. I went in for highlights. I was kept waiting for half an hour and wasn’t given any apology. It was so bussling that it wasn’t very relaxing and the stylist kept getting distracted by other customers by having conversations with them instead of focussing on me, it took much longer that normal to put my highlight foils in and the highlights didn’t go very close to the roots at all.

After having three good cuts, I was disappointed after my fourth visit. Unfortunately, one bad experience taints a place for me.

Elsewhere Salon - Wantage

15 Market Place, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 8AB

31-01-2013

I spotted this salon as I walked passed one day. It is just off the Market Place to the side of the Bear near to the Wantage delivery office in a lovely calm position, ideal for having a haircut away from the bustle and traffic of the Market Place.

The salon is modern but with some vintage touches. Zoe was very welcoming, friendly and easy to talk to. She was attentive to what I wanted and offered some good suggestions for my haircut.

You might wonder whether Wantage needs another salon but this definitely adds a touch of class and style to the selection in Wantage and I would highly recommend it. I have booked my next appointment already!

Rose Cottage Cafe - Castleton

Cross Street, Rochdale, Greater Manchester S33 8WH

30-01-2013

Desperate for a tea and cake after walking the Great Ridge we came hear having seen reviews online. Cake selection was good and service was quick although the tea room wasn't too busy. We had one piece of the carrot cake which was delicious. Had a pot of tea each which gave us a good 3 cups full each. Bill came to £7.20. Service good and tea room was cosy. The menu had some interesting info about the history of the site. Strange to see customers going outside to use the toilets.

La Bodega - Glossop

49 High Street West, Glossop, Derbyshire K13 8AZ

Lovely relaxed restaurant with delicious tapas.

Identified this restaurant from the reviews online and I was very pleased with it. It was a Tuesday night and it was about half full. The service was attentive and friendly. Decor was simple and the atmosphere was nice and casual meaning it is suitable for families, couples, friends or solo. The tapas was delicious.

Between two if us we chose 4 dishes which was about right but probably could have squeezed in another. Unfortunately they didn't have some of the items on the menu having had a problem with deliveries that day. The bill came to about £35 and we'd had 4 dishes, one pudding and 4 alcoholic drinks which I thought was very reasonable.

The Wheatsheaf - Glossop

Read some good reviews and it lived up to them. Cosy pub with very welcoming land lord. Traditional home cooked pub food which was delicious. Busy so had to get wait short while for a table but thay demonstrates its popularity. 2 main meals and 4 drinks for about £25.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - Portsmouth

Victory Gate, HM Naval Base, Portsmouth PO1 3LJ

11-11-2012

What a fantastic day out.

- HMS Victory guided tours
- HMS warrior free run around the ship
- Harbour boat tours
- Action stations activities for kids
- Mary Rose access currently closed for the building work on the new museum opening in May 2013.

Make sure you look around the Naval museum and definitely go into the 15 minute visual experience with a short film and then models with sounds and sights to recreate the Battle of Trafalgar finishing off with a fantastic close up of Wyllie painting of the Battle.

Worth buying your ticket online and printing it out before you go as you save money that way.

The tea room next to the antique centre does fantastic food and great variety and you even get a choice of tea leaves of a tea bag.

Wantage Builders Merchants - Grove

Unit 2D Elm Farm Business Park, Grove, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 7PD

28-10-2012

We needed some chipboard flooring and this builders merchants had come recommended and was most local to us. The gentleman serving was very knowledgeable and offered useful advice, despite the fact we were not trade customers (have had experience with larger chain companies not being particularly helpful to non-trade). The price was very competitive. We would definitely shop here again. They also delivery bulky items for free.
