Fantastic gem of a place . Lovely to browse books and take tea with scrummy homemade cake all served with a friendly welcome , love love love it !! Apparently offers accommodation and retreats and also has a variety if events on outside of the book festival weeks . A real asset to Wigtown ! :-)

One of my favourite pubs in Manchester , my boyfriend’s too . Lovely range of ales ( Ginger Marble .. Nom) and generally all round good pub food , runs epicurean nights that are very popular . Only wish they would replace some of the chess pieces so we don’t have to use a salt cruet as a stand in knight again :-D

A bizarre experience for a first visit..admittedly we went mid afternoon, so after the lunch time rush but before the evening diners. Entered to five staff standing/leaning around bar..prolonged wait in greeting ( amazing given there was no one else there) and we had to ask whether we could take a seat. On the upside..menus brought quickly ..decided on drinks and order placed but had to explain the name of the pear cider as waitress didn’t understand what we meant ( there is only ONE cider on the menu..so it shouldn’t be that hard) . Waitress returned, cider out of stock ( should really have known this ) and new drinks order placed. Came to order food, we just dropped in for a bite to eat so only wanted mains, proceeded to order , waitress stated “no starter?” to which we replied no which was greeted with an eyebrow raise and “hmm okay” . Very poor hospitality and awful communication. Also noted that despite tables having clearly been set in readiness for evening dinners someone had completely ignored the floor and there was a collection of used napkins under the table opposite..despite the table clearly having been re-set..not overly impressed …clean your floor !
Whilst awaiting food most bizarre aspect of entire visit..there was Bruce Springsteen track on when we had entered..we realised this appeared to be on loop as whilst waiting we were treated to it at least five times..it then proceeded to skip ..for some time..was intermittently sorted and then continued to loop.. intermittently treated to various staff singing along ..I feel like I now know every lyric ..
Food arrived, a pleasing pizza and a nice linguine dish with fresh seafood..so on the food front..well done . Several checks during meal that we were happy with food..also good…slow to collect payment..despite asking ..and there still being no other customers and an excess of bar leaning staff…all in all a disappointing visit..we will revisit to try again at a different time of day and see if this was a one off visit..I’m not usually one to place reviews or be overly critical despite eating out regularly..this, however , was one of the poorest and more bizarre dining experiences I have had since moving to Manchester..we will give it another go as the food was good ( I wouldn’t rave about it ..but it was tasty and well presented and worth the price..but if I have a second poor service experience like this here I certainly would not revisit again..and at present I wouldn’t risk recommending it..Jury’s out till next visit ..but they will have to do better or won’t go again !

Last ate here in 2008. Fantastic food, excellent friendly service. offers a slightly more formal dining experience than it's sister pub Sam's Chop House. Fantastic example of Victorian Pub so worth a look just for that but also has a great atmosphere of it's own. Good range of ales and good wine menu for diners although can be pricey for the range. Very tasty locally sourced meat dishes. Overall would recommend. Can get pretty busy

Fantastic place to go for a meal with family, friends or as a couple. Great tasty food and have taken meat munchers here before who have been surprised at the yumminess of their meals. Lovely friendly staff and intimate venue. Eclectic quirky crockery & decor. Love this place & next time in Nott'm will make a point of visiting

Fantastic food & great value for money. The major thing that let's this place down is it is too popular for it's own good..you can't book at weekends and that means mega queues ..they have set up a clever little electronic queue system so that you can wait in the bar area and a little moble device they gives you notifies you when to present yourself to be seated.
Last time I went there was an hour & half wait. When we were seated and ordered the food that came was great as usual but the service was hurried and hap hazard..largely due to the fact they were so busy..felt very sorry for the staff...I like a bustling place but it was packed with long queues to get a table, long queues at the bar and a 20 min queue to get into the toilets..it felt like a Christmas shopping nightmare experience but with good food. I will go again but will def never do so on a friday or weekend evening .
