Tandoori Nights - Dorset and Somerset

50 High Street, Poole, Dorset and Somerset BH15 1BT

24-11-2008

I had an absolutely abysmal evening at this restaurant. If only it was possible to leave zero stars (or perhaps minus five stars), I would have done so. The food was OK but the staff soiled our evening by their rude, abrupt manner and absolute lack of consideration for those dining. There were eight of us on our table and the remainder of the restaurant was virtually empty. In the end it actually became entertaining (for all of the wrong reasons) that the staff were so rude. I can only imagine that they wanted to go home. I took great pleasure in not leaving a tip and will NEVER visit this restaurant again, and will be advising everyone else to do the same. Visit the Eastern Eye on Ashley Road instead - this is a great place.

Tatnam Tandoori - Poole

Garland road, Tatnam Corner, Poole BH15 2HG

24-11-2008

I have read the contrasting reveiws of this restaurant, whcih was interesting. I have visited this restaurant on many occasions; I have only ever had a very positive experience here. The service is excellent; the staff are friendly and polite and the food itself has been superb. If there are at least two of you, I have noticed that there is always a complimentary side dish (something similar to Bombay potato) which is a nice touch. They had a refit perhaps 2 years ago; the decor is very pleasant. Parking can be foune either directly outside the curry house, or else, leaving the curry house by car by turning left, then take the left fork. I have always managed to park OK here. I would recommend the Tatnum Tandoori.

Hamleys - West End

188 - 196 Regent Street, Soho, London W1B 5BT

19-11-2008

Some stores acquire an almost cult status that means you just have to visit them, even if there are alternatives available; Harrods and Harvey Nichols are two such stores, and so too is Hamleys. In the field of toys, Hamleys is the place you have to go to! It can be very, very busy, but it is always kind of fun for kids and “big kids” alike. There is a very pleasant cafe where you can unwind and have a scone and coffee before checking out what is in store again. They usually have a great selection of Disney products available as well as other toys of the moment. Located in Regent St, it is close to other shops so well worth checking out on your voyage through the Retail Capital that marks thiis area of Central London.

Brent Cross Shopping Centre - Brent Cross

Management Off Prince Charles Drive, London NW4 3FP

19-11-2008

Brent Cross Shopping Centre is a vast emporium of shops, all in one location. There is a gigantic car park system so you should be able to park OK (of course at Christmas, things get a little crazy, in line with everywhere else!) Whatever it is you are after in the retail market, it will be available here at Brent Cross. Located just down the road from Cricklewood, and at the end of the M1, it is well served by major traffic routes so is easy to find. It is very easy to spend a great deal of money in here in one trip! Restrain yourself by deciding what you want to spend before you leave the house!

Liberty - Soho

210-220 Great Marlborough Street, Soho, London W1F 7HZ

19-11-2008

The building which houses Liberty is in itself well worth visiting the store for! Look up above and you will see some magnificent sights. On your journey through the store you will see eloquently tiled floors, grand oakk staircases and exquisite ceilings above. Of course the whole point of this is to get customers to part with their cash, and you will find plenty that will interest you. Some of the prices reflect the lavish surroundings of Liberty, and are excessive, to put it mildly; yet the fragrance department, particularly the mens’ section, has some unusual scents alongside the more familiar brands. Many fashionable items of clothing are to be found here. Enjoy!

Harrods - Knightsbridge

87-135 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, London SW1X 7XL

19-11-2008

Yes it’s a tourist cliche, yes it’s expensive, but yes you have to visit this place! Just being in the store is an experience in itself - you can wander around from department to department and see wares from around the globe alongside more traditional favourites. The cosmetics and fragrance hall is extremely comprehensive, housing a wide variety of products from across the full gamut of brands. The food is of course out of this world. DOn’t expect a bargain though - this is Harrods, not Wilkinson! The unspoken rule is that you have to buy something from Harrods, just something small if you like! The chocolate is particularly sumptuous!

Trafalgar Square - Charing Cross

8 Northumberland Avenue, City of Westminster, London WC2N 5BY

19-11-2008

If you’re in London town, you have to visit Trafalgar Square! It is one of the best known landmarks and should definitely be on your itinerary. The lions look pretty good close up, too! If possible, come here at some sort of party time (such as New Year’s Eve, or when England win (???) a major football match) to see people going crazy here - it becomes a sort of focal point for partying people! Nelson’s Column is stunning, standing proud at one end of the sqaure, with the National Portrait Gallery elegantly framing the other end of the square. Watch out for the pidgeons - they like it here too!

The London Aquarium - Waterloo

County Hall Westminster Bridge Road, riverside biulding westminster, London SE1 7PB

19-11-2008

Not the cheapest aquarium around, but don’t forget that you are in central London! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the aqaurium and spent several hours enjoying the species on display. Fortunately it wasn’t too busy when I visisted; I imagine it could get quite crowded when all of the school children are on holiday and visit en masse with their friends and family. There is a broad selection of fish and other creatures on display which I found fascinating. It was particularly exciting to see the sharks at suck close quarters. Feeding time was worth seeing, although it is a shame to see animals in captivity in any capacity. Well worth a visit.

Fairfield Hall - Mayfair

Park Lane, London W1K 7TR

19-11-2008

I like Fairfield Hall. It’s not exactly the most modern concert hall around, but the acoustics and sounds are excellent, and the stage is of quite a reasonable size. The Ashcroft Theatre is also located within the main foyer, and provides a smaller venue for theatre performances, touring shows and other miscellaneous events in a more intimate setting than that of the main Fairfield Hall itself. There is a restaurant in the foyer which serves quality meals before most performances for a reasonable price, although the servings are not always overly generous. Overall, I enjoy a visit to the Fairfield Hall and would recommend paying it a visit to watch your favourite artist or show.

Wing Yip - Croydon

544 Purley Way, London CR0 4NZ

19-11-2008

A super place for everything Asian that you will need in your cooking. There is also a restaurant (very nice too) next to Wing Yip where you can eat straight after your visit to the supermarket, just in case you can’t wait until you get home! WingYip offers so much for the Asian kitchen, and at prices which are so much cheaper than in regular UK supermarkets. Chinese Five Spice, for example, is available in a large bag at Wing Yip for a very fair price. In Tesco, you have to buy it in a tiny little jar and it works out MUCH more expensive! Of course the range of products at Wing yip far outstrips that available at Tesco. A great place.
