Hunters Moon - Birmingham

220 Coleshill Road, Birmingham, West Midlands B36 8BE

13-02-2013

I have only been to The Hunters Moon twice  - albeit in the last fortnight because it is fairly close to my dear friend Ally. There is a large car park to the front & side so there is never a parking problem - especially on a Tuesday Night! All of the Staff have been well trained - always smiling and always attentive - which is down to the Boss, Laurence. The Hunters Moon is part of the Hungry Horse brand which in turn is part of The Greene King Empire - which means there are always 2 Real Ales available - a passion of mine & Ally. When I first met her many moons ago she drank Lager & Lime & wondered why she had a hangover afterwards - too many chemicals! Ally was consistent having the Smothered 9oz Steak Sizzler on both occasions - which were both cooked medium to perfection at £9.39p. I like variation so on my first visit I had The Slow-Cooked Lamb Shank at £8.59p. The meat literally fell off the bone - a superb meal with quality service. On visit number 2 (Feb 12th 2013) I had the Mild or Wild Chicken Skewer with Jalapeno sauce. Wow! Wow! Wow! At £8.69p it was superb value for money and cooked to perfection. Sometimes chicken skewers are cooked without a glaze and have all the flavour & texture of cardboard - not these - they were sublime & so tender & tasty. Ally & I shared a bottle of Pinot Grigio which was well chilled & well below £10. We concluded with 2 Irish Liqueor Coffees - superb. If you live anywhere in the viciinity - try The Hunters Moon - you will not be disappointed.

Halfway House - Edinburgh

24 Fleshmarket Close, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1BX

09-06-2012

No-one should ever visit Edinburgh without visiting The Halfway House. Normally I do not do stairs - but there is no other way of getting there. About 5 mins from Waverley, it is a supreme pub which oozes quality. The range of Real Ales was excellent - we had pints of Scottish Dark Horse (4.5%) and Knops California Common (4.6%) accompanied by a Cullen Skink Pie with mushy peas - so, so good. Fortunately the weather was clement so we could sit outside for drinkies (and a small cigar) but we ate inside. Large it is not but oooh it has quality and character written all over it. It is undoubtedly in my top 3 pubs in the whole of the UK. Not just a watering hole, but a true experience that should not be missed. No praise is too high.

The Pot Still - Glasgow

154 Hope Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 2TH

09-06-2012

The Pot Still is a superb Glasgow pub offering a limited range of Real Ales but a wonderful range of Scottish Malts. The atmosphere is truly excellent with quality wood everywhere. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. We had a pint of Caledonian Coffee Porter 4.3% which was in fine fettle, but there were no other beers that appealed as unusual - which is why we moved on to The Drum And Monkey. The Pot Still is a great place to start a little session, but not somewhere to spend a whole evening - unless you are devoted to quality whisky. Highly recommended for a quick visit.

The Drum & Monkey - Glasgow

93 St. Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 5TF

09-06-2012

Visited The Drum And Monkey on 2 consecutive nights - June 4 & 5 - when on a short visit to Glasgow. The choice of Real Ales and Food was truly excellent. The Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. I particularly loved the Jaipur IPA and the Haggis. The Ribs were also excellent. The Pub has true character and is a credit to the Nicholsons Chain. Whenever in Glasgow, I will look no further the The Drum and Monkey - it offers everything I need in a Pub offering Real Ale and quality food. Highly recommended. Only problem? I never found out the origin of the name, which is a little unusual. I didn't see any drums or monkeys.

The Beehive Inn - Curdworth

Beehive Lane, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands B76 9HG

28-03-2011

I visited The Beehive on March 19th with my Fiancee Linda and enjoyed a superb night. We were lead to a table as soon as we arrived and the menus arrived a few seconds later. The atmosphere was everything you would hope for in a "Village pub" with a well sized car-park. We both chose meals from the inventive list of specials. Linda had Shin of Beef braised in a Red Wine Sauce, I opted for the Ham Hock with Parsley Sauce. Both were superbly cooked and presented. Neither of us finished the excellent selection of vegetables, such was the generosity of the portions. A major bonus was live music from 2130 - 2300. A brilliant young key board player called Carl Sinclair played quality pop and boogie backed by a drummer. Mrs Boss and her staff made us feel really welcome and the service was exemplary throughout. We look forward to another visit very soon.

Big Wok - Birmingham

5 Wrottesley Street, Birmingham, West Midlands B5 4RT

18-01-2010

We found The Big Wok by accident - my intended venue was closed. What a stroke of luck! The Big Wok is absolutely superb value for money. We arrived about 1315 and left about 1500. Throughout, people were coming & going. Even on a Monday lunchtime, it was busy. The choice of food is not good, it is exceptional. For £5.99p it is a venue that anyone and everyone should visit. Food iwe tried ncluded superb BBQ Spare Ribs; Crispy Mongolian Lamb; Dim Sum; Crispy Fried Chicken Balls; Sweet Potato Tempura; Chow Mein; Garlic Mushrooms and Chicken Satay - and that was about 5% of what was on offer! A 250ml glass of wine was £3.50p and a large Pepsi £2.00p. Total bill under £21.00p. The staff were also superb - ever smiling - ever helpful. I will return & return & return. Big Wok is exceptional. Thank you for a superb dining experience.

Grameen Khana - Balsall Heath

310-312 Ladypool Road, Birmingham, West Midlands B12 8JY

06-12-2009

My girlfriend and I visited Grameen Khana on Saturday 28th November after a recommendation from a colleague at work. We went with very high hopes for a superb evening and our expectations were substantially exceeded. Popadoms were promptly served with 4 superb dips including a hot lime pickle. We shared starters of lamb tikka and monkfish kebabs, both of which were cooked to perfection. Linda had Lamb Shank presented on Pumpkin sauce. I love fish and was directed towards Pabda Bhuna. Both were of the very highest quality, enjoyed with pulao rice and a chappati. With two soft drinks each, the bill was still pennies below £30, magnificent value for money. The only downer was the broken yoghurt machine, which precluded the option to have mango lassi. The ambiance was amazing with simplistic but tasteful decor and a background of Asian music from a plasma TV showing Bollywood movies. It wasn't just a meal, it was a superb experience which Linda and I hope to enjoy on many, many future occasions. The staff are superb, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. what more could anyone ask for?
