Stag Espresso at Dovecot - Edinburgh

10 Infirmary Street, Edinburgh, Scotland

09-07-2012

I agree with all of the previous reviews.  We discovered this cafe by accident, having almost given up on finding somewhere good in the area (there are lots of cafes, but 'good' is harder to find).  We were absolutely delighted with it - the staff are so friendly and helpful and the food and drinks are outstanding.  My daughters love the little knitted jackets on the glasses of hot chocolate, and all the baking we have tried has been excellent.

The cafe is spacious, light and airy, and we have now been back several times - it's always been great.

I would also recommend the gallery itself - my arty daughter really enjoyed the Telford College show there.

bunney's deli - North Berwick

96 High Street, North Berwick, Scotland EH39 4HE

09-07-2012

Bunney's is a great deli in the heart of North Berwick.  It stocks all sorts of things that you can't get in supermarkets (and in NB you would also have a long walk to get to either of the supermarkets), including bread from the Dunbar Community Bakery, Yester Farm milk, and local fresh produce.  The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Bunney's has recently opened a cafe at the rear of the shop - I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so.

Westgate Gallery - North Berwick

39-41 Westgate, North Berwick, Scotland EH39 4AG

09-07-2012

This is my favourite cafe in North Berwick.  The baking is superb, the service is good, and the surroundings are very pleasant - the tea room is at the back of the very nice gift shop/gallery, it is very light and airy and you do not feel cramped.  The scones are excellent, and my daughters have rated every cake they have tried very highly.

I agree with the previous reviewer though - get there early, especially in the summer, and on Fridays (for some reason) all year round, as they do get busy.  Mid week in winter is a bit easier, and personally I prefer North Berwick then, as it's less crowded and you can have some wonderful walks along the beach in the winter sunshine.

Smeaton Nursery & Tearoom - East Linton

Preston Road, East Linton, Scotland EH40 3DT

09-07-2012

This is one of my all time favourite places for coffee in East Lothian.  I love walking through the nursery to reach the tea room, and I am even happier when I arrive and see the trays of delicious cakes and fabulous scones.

The tea room is housed in the old boiler room of Smeaton House (now sadly long gone).  It is not smart but it is very relaxed and cosy, the staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the baking never disappoints.

I also really like the fact that the nursery is just that - wonderful plants, none of the usual 'garden centre' ephemera.  The nursery staff are also extremely welcoming.

I recommend Smeaton unreservedly - except that I don't want it to become too popular as I love its peaceful atmosphere!

Con Panna - St. Andrews

203 South Street, St. Andrews, Scotland KY16 9EF

09-07-2012

We have been to Con Panna three times on various trips to St Andrews.  I think the town is sadly lacking in good coffee shops - there are plenty of them but most of them are dire.  We like Con Panna because the service is quick and the cakes are good - the scones are excellent, and we also recently had a bacon roll, also very good.

I understand what the previous reviewer is saying about decor - it could do with a bit of smartening up - but compared to what else is on offer in this vastly overrated town, I think Con Panna is pretty good.
