The Northern Slopes - Bristol

Bedminster/Knowle, Bristol BS4 1PD

22-01-2009

‘The Northern Slopes’ refer to a cluster of green areas on the hill side where Bedminster and Knowle converge. This area provides a swathe of green amongst the red brick houses forming this 1930’s estate bringing a bit of the countryside into the city. The area really gives residence and dog walkers the chance for a breath of fresh air whilst they admire the stunning views across the city. Many of Bristol’s landmarks can be seen from this vantage point including the Suspension Bridge, Bristol Cathedral and Cabot Tower, in the summer it’s a fantastic place to view the balloons taking of from the fiesta. There are several entrances to the Slopes dotted around the different roads, so if you’re in the area it’s definitely worth going in and having a look at the city from a different angle.

Avenue Cafe - Bristol

1 Queen Square, Bristol BS1 4HL

21-01-2009

This is a really great place for breakfast or work lunches or just to meet a friend for a relaxed coffee. It’s location near Bristol’s Queens Square makes it an ideal choice for anyone working around there. They have a good range of drinks including real smoothies, an array of teas and coffees including chai latte so it’s a lovely place just for grabbing a coffee but if you can stay longer the food is really good. The breakfasts are a refreshing change as they are not the typical greasy English breakfasts. Although they do have cooked breakfasts they are not greasy and they have some other lovely healthier options including muesli and yogurt and bagel and crème cheese. At luch they serve jacket potatoes with gorgeous fillings, soup, paninis and the most delicious looking cakes, which are hard to pass up! Their whole menu seems to have had a lot of thought put into it and the result is somewhere a little bit different that stands out from the rest. The prices are not out of the way and even if you do have pay a little more than you normally might its worth it for the refreshing menu and relaxed atmosphere.

Calico & Company - Bedminster

78-82 Bedminster Parade, Bedminster, Bristol BS3 4HL

21-01-2009

Calico have a fantastic range of fabric although they specialise in furnishing fabric so if you want to make some curtains or have something you need to reapolster its well worth having a look. They have a lot of the furnishings fabrics sorted into colour groups which is particularly useful if your redecorating and are looking for fabrics that look good together. They often have end of rolls at really reduced prices so if it’s a smaller piece you need they are worth checking out. The staff are really friendly and helpful, which is probably why there are always people asking for advice on projects. They also have some sort of curtain making service, which I don’t know a lot about as I make my own, they also have some ready made I belive as well as cushions. This is somewhere I could spend a lot of time as they have some lovely stock, so if you need some fabric definitely have a look.

The Grant Bradley Gallery - Bristol

1 Saint Peter's Court, Bristol BS3 4AQ

21-01-2009

Grant Bradley Gallery is situated between Asda and Bedminster library. It’s a great space for exhibiting art and the high ceiling gives it a really airy feel. They host a wide range of art work from sculpture and jewellery to photographs and paintings. It’s a great little gallery to visit and have a look round, especially if you are in the area, or even to use it as a chance to meet a friend as they also have a little café area, serving reasonably priced drinks and snacks. The pieces themselves are affordable if you want to purchase a piece for your home, or there are smaller pieces you could get as a unique gift for someone else. If your interested in making art they also run some classes so its worth having a look at their website to find out more.

Korketrekkeren - Oslo

Frognerseteren, Oslo

21-01-2009

This was the location of the Bob Sleigh run for the 1952 Winter Olymics held in Oslo, its has now been turned into a toboggan run for sledging in the winter months. You can hire sledges at the top not far from Frognerseteren metro station and sledge down the 2000m course to Midtstuen station where you can hop back on the train to the top again. (You can get a ticket which means you can keep riding the train all day)
I would highly recommend heading up there if your in Oslo when there is snow on the ground. It is so much fun and we kept going all day until my husband got ill as he wasn’t wearing water proof gear so got extremely cold. But as long as you dress for it it’s fantastic.
The views from the top are breath taking and in amongst the trees you could be in C.S Lewis’ Narnia. The hire for the sledges was reasonable especially considering you can keep going all day. As we got handed our sledges we nervously asked ‘where’s the break’, to which they laughed and proceeded to tell us the only controls you have are your feet, ‘ahh’ we thought so that’s why we had to sign a waver saying they were not responsible in the event of injury!
The course apparently takes 8-10 minutes but it seems longer, maybe its just because we were a little unnerved by what seemed like sheer drops to one side at points, so kept breaking, or maybe because it was so exhilarating it seemed to make time slow down. And despite our initial nerves we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This is definitely not just for children; adults can have a lot of fun too.
If you are in need of some warm refreshments there is a delightful restaurant at the top of the run serving hot food although as with all Oslo restaurants food is expensive and here was no exception; a bowl of soup, bread roll and coffee each, set us back about £20 ( just don’t convert back into pounds so you can actually enjoy your food). Having said that the chance to sit in front of the roaring fire in their dinning area was money well spent. Once your all warmed up and dried off you can head back for some more sledging, or indeed cross country skiing which was also available, or if you’ve had enough its just a short walk back up a bit of a steep slippery hill to the metro station you arrived at, which takes you back into the centre of Oslo.

m32 motorway - Bristol

Bristol BS5 6NJ

21-01-2009

The M32 motorway is a fast and efficient way of either entering Bristol or leaving the city with fast links to London via the M4 or Cardiff and the North using The M5

IKEA is situated just off junction 2 of the M32 along with Tesco’s and Asda Home and Mother care.

Cabot Circus the new Bristol Shopping area is situated just off the M32 with lots of parking but is very expensive available to shoppers.
As you travel along the M32 you will see a BT tower and an old asylum that has been transformed into apartments.
The University is also close to the M32

Golden Grill - Clevedon

27 Old Church Road, Clevedon BS21 6LU

21-01-2009

The Golden Grill makes the best Kebabs I have tasted. It’s well worth a trip and we frequenly drive a 20 mile round trip to have one of their Kebabs, they are so good. There is nothing better than sitting on the Clevedon sea front with one of these mouth watering kebabs and a fizzy drink. This Kebab house is a hidden treasure and the only Kebab house we use within the Bristol area. The Chicken Kebab consists of good quality chicken breast, whilst the veggie option is delicious grilled halloumi cheese. To top of your choice of Kebab are crunchy fresh salad vegetables and a selection of dressings including mint sauce which is really yummy on Kebabs.
