Ocean Kitchen Bar & Grill - Edinburgh

We ate here for lunch on the Saturday before Christmas. It's not somewhere I would choose and our expectations were not high. However the food was reasonable (apart from the burger which was not nice) and the salmon, tuna and kid's chicken fillets were all surprisingly nice. The fish and chips was also good and my mother-in-law's pasta bake seemed to be pleasant enough. It's not top quality by any means but the price was reasonable so I guess you get what you pay for.

Sadly rather average. We were expecting something special (my wife has been to the Glasgow restaurant before and had a good experience). Unfortunately we were disappointed. We were there with our 2 children for a Saturday lunch so it was very busy but I don't think that is enough of an excuse for the lack of distinction in the food and the rather lacklustre service. The kids meals were particularly uninspiring. My daughter had the fish fingers but there was nothing to go with the fish (which was a very small portion) other than a tiny salad (which didn't really fit with the dish). If you want a family friendly Italian experience in Edinburgh there are much better choices (for example La Favorita or any of that chain).

A complete turnaround from the original Fountain Bar. I wouldn't have been seen dead in this place in it's previous guise. However now it is absolutely my kind of pub! No TVs. Sensible volume music and superb beer. The food is very nice too. It appears to be connected to the Golden Rule (just round the corner) in some way (possibly the same owner). The end result of this is that the beer selection and quality is outstanding. Came here for food last weekend and the fish pie was amazing (see pictures). That is a whole langoustine on top of my fish pie. The beef pie looked great too (I'm planning to try it on my next visit).

It's not the most healthy food in the world (but takeaways rarely are) but it tastes great and the service is friendly. We often pick up last minute meals there with the kids. They love choosing the toppings. Great value too.

This is now a block of converted flats. Sadly the hotel closed some years ago.

The Golden Rule is more of an occasional haunt rather than a regular watering hole but that is not down to the quality (more my somewhat quiet social life of late). I have been visiting this pub for more than 10 years now and I always leave thinking “I must come here more often”. I am really rather picky about my beer but The Golden Rule generally doesn’t disappoint. I’ve just come away after 2 superb pints of Ossian (served with a smile). I really must go back more regularly.

Piecebox - Edinburgh

A brand new coffee shop/café in the heart of Polwarth. To be honest, given the large number of very good cafés nearby in Bruntsfield I doubted whether "another one", slightly off the beaten track, would actually stand a chance. However, if early indications are anything to go by then this venture looks very promising. A very welcoming atmosphere with lots of natural light and an open feel. The staff are extremely friendly. The menu offers a good mix of plain hearty food with some exotic sounding dishes for those with a penchant for being a bit more adventurous. I've been a few times now and I haven't been disappointed yet. Very good Eggs Benedict one day and a fine bacon butty the next.

A picture says a thousand words... clean plates everywhere. I guess the only complaint might be that the portion size was a bit too big (not really a complaint for me as I like my food). Service was very pleasant and well informed (our resident wine buff was kept well entertained with a good choice of more unusual wines). The "real" beer was very well kept, and served just as I like it (without unnecessary froth). There was also a nice choice of Belgian beer (only in bottles though). Nice open fire too.
