Los Cardos Fresh Mex - Edinburgh

I have only been here once and that is a crime. I do live on the other side of town, but there is a bus which takes me right there, so I really have no excuse!

I had the pulled pork when I was in and it was outstanding! The staff are very helpful and will point you in the right direction heat wise for the salsa’s. I was lucky enough to be able to get a seat, but there are lliterally only a handful, so you have to time it right! They also have a loyalty card, which must be great for the people who live near. (can you hear the pang of regret at living just that bit too far away?)

My only complaint is that they don’t deliver to my side of town yet. I can live in hope though…

I went here with a friend one night. She really enjoyed it, but I didn’t. I didn’t feel that the fish was quite “right” (although not in a way that made us ill). I also didn’t appreciate the waitress constantly coughing.

There menu is badly laid out and worded, as they have a double sided card that shows some set menus and bento boxes. There are two types of bento box, and the wording beside one states it’s for lunch only, but this actually applies to them both and needs to be clearer.

There was a man collecting a take away order while we were in and he had to come back into the restuarant 3 or 4 times to collect the missing pieces!

I have been back since by myself, but no, this place isn’t for me.

I have been going here for about two years now, after my previous hairdresser of 16 years completely killed any trust we had after ruining my first ever cropped hair cut. It was recommended by a friend of a friend and all three of us now get out hair cut here.

Greig has been styling my hair for about the last year now and he did my first colour (in this salon) on my last visit. I was really pleased with the colour and couldn’t believe how well priced it was.

It’s a really friendly, welcoming salon and I hope to be going here for many years to come.

I had a brilliant time at the Qype event that was held here last week. 4 excellent cheeses (Anster mature cheddar, Loch Arthur mature cheddar, Inverloch goats cheese and Isle of Kintyre Applewood) were served up with some lemon infused rapeseed oil, three home-made chutneys and some Stewart Brewing beer (Hollyrood, Edinburgh Gold, Embra and St Giles), all held together by a very lovely and knowledgeable owner and one of the brewers from Stewarts. I’m not a beer or lager drinker, but I did really enjoy the pairing of them with cheese and it’s something that I might try again at home.

This was a really lovely shop, which I hope to be back in shortly, that has a great selection of produce. I especially enjoyed the spiced pumpkin chutney, which I may be misappropriating as having been made by me in this year’s Christmas hampers!!

edinburghlarder Thanks for the review – happy to hear you liked the chutney – always good to hear when people make their own too – let us know how it turns out!

Unless you like heavily salted food, I wouldn't bother. How this place is rated so highly through TripAdvisor, I'll never know!

I had the Mushroom Wellington and a cup of tea. I received a small plate that was half "hand cut" chips and the other half was a pathetic bit of Iceberg lettuce with one slice of tomato, with a small tub of homemade coleslaw. The Wellington had been chucked on top of this, so as you can imagine, not the best presentation.

It took 8 or 9 mouthfuls of stodgy, salty, pastry to get to any sort of "filling" in the Wellington. Yes, as advertised, there was a mushroom, spinach and cheese filling, unfortunately, there was absolutely no taste to any of it. The "hand cut" chips, come heavily salted. So heavily, that you think they must have been salted before going into the fryer! The only thing on the plate that was halfway decent was the coleslaw.

Service was decent, when they weren't busy sprawled across the booths chatting to their mates. Tables were also far too cramped, both for getting into and the number of people expected to sit around them. Oh and you get two Fruit Salad chewy sweets with your bill.

It's fair to say that I won't be going back.

Caciopepe - Edinburgh

Caciopepe is the latest incarnation of the old Patio Restaurant and definately the best!

I have eaten here 3 times (twice at night and one at lunchtime) in the last fortnight and each time has been outstanding. The pasta is excellent (especially the butternut squash tortellini), and the people I have been dining with have all had rave reviews of the pizzas, lasagne and scallop risotto. They also do a lovely Prosecco by the glass.

This is somewhere I plan to use frequently and I hope that the standard doesn't slip once they have been open a while.

Came her for lunch on Saturday and will definately be back.

There were three of us and we started with the antipasti sharing plate. (while we were waiting for this, we were given a tasting plate of 24 month aged parmesan with balsamic creme) This sharing plate came with white pork mortadella, spicy salami, chicken terrine parfait, pecorino cheese, gorganzola, sourdough bread, pickled veg and San Danielle ham. All of these were totally outstanding and clearly the top of the range. Luckily, we took this for two people as there was so much of it! We followed this up with one of us having the meatballs in tomato sugo and the other two having the baked aubergine. Unfortunatley, we were all too stuffed to have dessert, but their coffee was outstanding. Bei and Nanini doesn't taste like that anywhere else in town!

If you're the driver and are in here for the night, try the "red bitter". It's Campari without the alchol and makes a refreshing change for drinking coke all night.

The Griffin Bar - Glasgow

I was in here to see a show as part of the Glasgow Comedy Festival. I had a drink at the bar when I first went in and got the impression that it was a bit of an old man's pub that it was slowly morphing out of that .

There are three parts to the bar, with the comedy being in the rear function room. The room was full to capacity and the heat was almost unbearable. If that's what it's like in March, I dread to think how hot it could get in a good summer!

It was fairly quiet when I went into the show, but by the time I came out and hour and a half later, the pub was packed to the rafters and it was virtually impossible to get a seat.

All in all, it seems like a nice pub where you wouldn't get any hassle if you were on your own and it's not too pricey.

Was here a couple of weeks ago with parents. Despite being excited to try Michael Caines, we decided to stick with the bar rather than the main restaurant, as we didn't know what time we would be able to get there for.

We ordered two courses each from the Divine Dining menu. Either the chef doesn't know that nouvelle cuisine went out in the early 90's or he deliberately makes the portions so small you end up taking the three course option! We all had the pear and walnut salad. I'm sorry, but as gorgeous as it was, a third or a pear, sliced, with 3 walnut halves and a couple of sprigs of rocket, does not a salad make. For the mains, two of us had the salmon and one went for the beef cheek. Again, no complaints and the portion size was somewhat bigger. The waitress seemed surprised when we passed on the dessert menu and just had coffees.

Another thing missing for us was the lack of a bread basket. This was duly noted in the comment card given with the bill and my mother also brought it up with the waitress. Who then duly announced that if we had asked, she would have brought us some! I'm sorry, but we shouldn't have to know to ask.

While this was a lovely meal, with beautifully cooked food and lovely staff, it is very unlikely we will be back. As soon as my folks got home, the first thing they did was put on tea and toast to stave off the hunger pangs!

Was here 10 days ago with my mother after a spa. It was very, very quiet for a Friday lunchtime (we were one of two tables occupied) which led to little atmosphere.

To start, I had the cob chowder, but don't remember what mother had. For mains, I had the harissa chicken and mother had the aubergine tian. The food and drink were both nice enough, but there was something missing. I don't know if it was a lack of atmosphere, but it was enough that we won't be rushing back.
