The Oak Tree - Rednal
Lickey Road, Birmingham, West Midlands B45 8UX
15-01-2011
14 Jan 2010 I know its a low rating but Oak tree let ltsef down
we know its never going to be fine dining but the xmas dinner down in the basement felt like a dungeon very dark tucke away in the corner 2 round tables pushed together to make a large table of 8 wasnt condusive for conversation
Service was good very prompt
portion size was good but tiny plastic serving pots of garlic mayo and tomato sauce is a particular bug bear of mine
pate was on the cheap sort
butter portions were rock hard we had to warm them in our clenched hands 3 of us doing that at the table can't even think what we looked like !
mains were just ok - the menu listed Salmon I was given a piece of gray reconstituted white fish be it coley hake or pollock it was NOT salmon and it still tasted of the boil in the bag accompianied by SPROUTS very hard peas roast potatoes carrots very unusual combination it wasnt very nice at all and you'll be shouting at me for my nxt statement I didnt comment when asked if everything was ok but we were on a xmas night out and they werent my work colleagues so You can stop reading at this point if you like
Dessert was yes you've guessed it squirty cream over everthing
We didnt even want to try the coffee or tea
to top the evening table was being cleared - no sign of dessert as yet ???? and the waitress was taking the glasses away and my wine
glass which had a large mouthful left in it it certainly didnt look like dregs was whisked away by putting her thumb in it to manage the other 3 glasses at the same time of then she said i do apologise I have stuck my thum in that I will immediatley get you another I hadnt spoken a word only to answer yes it was dry white thank you
I do understand the price was not huge but why do everthing on the cheap and nasty ts a shame the main menu looked ok and the normal area of the pub looked clean and bright and wel kept instead of shoving us down in the dungeon which was so unwelcoming and stuffed with other xmas parties but saying that I may go in the daytime lunch and try it again
qypers comments please

I think it has only been open a fortnight or so
was incredibly busy as all want to try it -a good buzz about it
very warehousey informal but staff are quite attentive
Saturday 4th december about 430 pm 35 minute wait which is fine we poach two stools in the waiting area and choose from the menu
we watch as dishes waft back and forth the burger italiano looks amazing and a cheesey creamy pasta dsh catches our eye we decide on the carbonara and the burger
trebbiano gargenega 2 large glasses of which were recommended because it was cheaper i was thinking of the soave but was persuaded for the trebbiano yeuk very strong yellow colour and not to my taste at all we added a splash of lemonade to it - i know i know i should have tasted it and sent it back but didnt..... we winced every time we drank a mouthful yno that shuddering thing u do Lauren out server couldnt have been more helpful great table by the window so we could people watch considering how busy they were..... ok back to the food 2 mians one the burger and one of the bucatini carbonara pancetta was crispty the hin ubes of pasta very filling hardly any sauce and only luke warm im sorry we had a couple of tastes and called lauren over commenting could we have a spoonful of sauce it is a trifle dry and she whipped it away nicely of course we got on with the burger which was fresh with pickes and mustard and WHOLE CHILLIES but delish our carbo came back a brand new one with extra sauce and we got on and tucked in it was an ok experience but sorry wont be rushing back maybe i'll let it settle down a tad but dont let that put you off the spag bol looks amazing

14 october 2010 pre theatre meal tried the buffet was brill the service was a bit slow we did explain 3 times we were awaiting the start of the production of blood brothers the starters were great loads of duck and the large sharing plate was well enough for four of us again we had to request a faster service because of the theatre timings but it sort of went on deaf ears we did actually miss the 1st 10 mins of the production because of trying to pay the bill but cannot fault the food it was well worth it and we couldnt move afterwards so full of noodels and aubergine and swwet and sour chicken will come again very good
