Sakura - Mitte

Kleine Königstraße 11, 70178 Stuttgart

04-10-2008

Sakura holds a special place in my heart, as this is where I had my first dinner date with my husband. This of course was in the pre “running sushi” days.

We recently moved back to Stuttgart and thought we would go to Sakura for old times sake. We were quite shocked to find a conveyer belt there to greet us. Not quite the quaint little place it once was. We decided to give it a shot anyways, not having a lot to lose with the 15,90 all you can eat deal.

The conveyer belt delivers quite a variety of items (fruit, puddings, dumplings, satays, red cabbage, etc…) , but not really a lot of sushi. A lot of the sushi that was on it were quite strange. Smoked salmon, ham, and other strange ingredients. The sushi rice also didn’t taste like sushi rice, it actually had no flavour. We were fortunate enough to get a couple plates of sashimi each, but they were never to be seen again. The sashimi was okay, but the fish was barely defrosted. The only sushi that really tasted okay was the salmon (the non-smoked variety). We did not try the mongolian bbq that is also included. I guess in summary, the quality was on the low side, but I guess what can you expect for the price.

The service was a bit abrupt and I felt like we were somehow inconveniencing her. It was also my first experience where a server used “du” with me in a restaurant.

I do not think we will be returning.

Sushi-Ya - Mitte

Kronprinzstraße 6, 70173 Stuttgart

The sushi here is made from very fresh ingredients and was very tasty; however, they seem to miss the boat when it comes to presentation (ripped nori, uneven cuts, fish roe sloppily applied). For the price I would have expected more care to be taken in preparing the food.

As for the ambiance of the restaurant, it really depends where you sit. We arrived at about 7pm and only the two tables near the door and beside the fish market were available. The store had just closed and they were scrubbing the floor in the fish market, which was quite distracting. As well, they have a showcase at the entrance to the restaurant there with some unattractive tupperware type containers, which we were sitting across from. The decor in general is quite nice and the tables are nicely set. The stools look great, but are not that comfortable.

The service was quick and attentive. Our meals were prepared quickly and brought to the table immediately.
