Had works Christmas party here and not knowing what to expect - espacially as the night before had an absolutely awful experience with another Christmas party at The George Washington Hotel.

This was absolutely classy.  Everything from the Game Terrine starter, via the sizzling beef platter to the cheese platter and the mini dessert platter (ideal when you want a bit of everything).  Posh nosh really, but it was Christmas and work paid for it.

Would love to repeat it again soon, just to see if it always this good!

I have also been going here with a number of years and as mentioned previously, have never had a bad experience or even a mediocre one.  Would just like to add that over the years, I have been in a party of six, with partners, cousin, father, friends etc. and about the only thing I haven't done is gone alone! (note to self....must try this).

In these times of tight budgets, the "specials" here have to be seen to be believed!  3 courses from the specials menu (Friday night, Saturday night, etc. ) for about £6.95 - including a free half or glass of wine!

Excellent staff - even though the head guy never recognised me at first after losing 6 stone (I joked I lost it by keeping away from his restaurant for a year!) so efficient yet friendly and always on hand to advise or recommend etc.

I can't understand why so few reviews for The Royal as whenever I go, there are people from all over the northeast travelling in excess of 20 miles in some cases.

One day I'll spend a day on Ocean Road lunching at Colmans and having dinner at The Royal.  Just need a top-notch breakfast place in the vicinity and we're good to go!!

A good enough chippy, but having used it a few times in the past few months after work (i.e. before Donwell chippy was open) I found the quality of the chips varied.  Sometimes they were fresh and hot, other times it was clear when you got them on a plate they'd dried out or been sitting there for a very long time.

Lacks the consistency of some of the other chippies, ut when it's good, it's good.

In my opinion, the best fish and chips in the north east - bar none.  I do prefer the restaurant to the takeaway as they seem to taste better (maybe it is just me?) - besides, a breadroll and cuppa along with mushy pease makes the meal.

The takeaway chips are great and it's the lack of grease that makes them standout for me.  Their fish, is the best anywhere in the vicinity.  Just have a look at how they source will tell you why.  Alongside the Magpie Cafe in Whitby for quality.

Four stars for the sheer size of the fish and chis portions! - easily enough for 2 people to share, possibly 3 or even 4 if appetite is small.  Not only quantity, but quality is very good too.  I've been using this regularly for years as it is my closest  "proper" chippy (i.e. don't throw frozen chips into a pan!).  This chippy is second only to the excellent Redz in terms of quality, but nobody matches them for quantity!

REDZ TRADITIONAL FISH AND CHIPS - Washington

Ok there's not a lot of competition out there for title of best fish & chip shop in Washington.  DOnwell Chippy has the edge of sheer portion size (outrageous that one person can eat fish and chips with a cuppa and bread and butter), but Redz certainly has large enough portions and a much better quality.

Can't comment on delivery as I only ever call in person as I don't think fresh fish and chips lend themselves to home delivery.
