White Stuff - Harrogate
8A Princes Street, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1NH
30-11-2008
This shop isn’t particularly cheap for what it is, but there are some nice pieces to be found, and some good value items when there is a sale on.
The shop sells clothing, but in my opinion, particularly focuses on women’s pieces. The style is a cross between FatFace and Monsoon, if that can be imagined (?!?) and does sell some lovely skirts.
The shop is well laid out, and does not feel cluttered. The window displays are often amusing (the mannequins have squirrel heads at the moment?!!?), and the carrier bags change to match the theme of these which is nice.
The staff seem fairly friendly, and the shop has a nice quiet atmosphere, which is nice when everywhere else seems to be hectic!
So worth a look, and you may find the odd piece, but personally for me, there’s just not enough choice and its too expensive to build a whole wardrobe from.
The Works - Harrogate
16 Oxford Street, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1PU
30-11-2008
The Works advertises itself, primarily, as a discount bookstore, but can also be great for picking up bargains on cards, art supplies, instruments and a whole other load of random things!
The Harrogate Works is laid out over 3 floors, the ground floor on which you enter, and downstairs and an upstairs.
The downstairs stocks various art supplies, stationary and art related books (with the odd computer program thrown in!). There are some great bargains to be found here, the canvases particularly are great value, and some of the branded stationary is much cheaper then elsewhere.
The main floor stocks the most popular books, seasonal products and a whole other random selection of things! There are some good discounts to be found on books, particularly biography type books- you won’t generally find the current bestsellers in here.
The upstairs is all books, and has a wide selection of different categories and genres.
The shop is well laid out and easy to find your way round, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
So all in all, worth a look, but don’t always go in looking for something specific- it may not be there… however you may be surprised by everything you do find there!
I Auckland - Harrogate
1 South Park Road, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 5QU
30-11-2008
Well this is the dentist I (and the rest of my household!) go to, and I must say I have never been dissatisfied with their service!
The receptionists are friendly and helpful, and are very useful for making appointments at a time convenient to you. The waiting room is comfy and has a good selection of magazines to read to fill in the time if you have to wait.
The dentists themselves, well Mr Auckland in my case, is very professional, and has always performed to the highest of my expectations.
My daughter has also had a brace fitted here (as Mr Auckland is also an orthodontist). The practicality of having this done at our dentists is incredibly useful, as it means we do not have to commute to Leeds or York as others do, for the monthly check up, or if something goes wrong. On the one time when there has been a problem with my daughter’s brace (the end broke in her mouth) they made us an immediate appointment with the available dentist (for him to remove the broken piece), and booked an appointment to have it fixed in again with Mr Auckland the next morning.
All in all I have been very pleased with the service we have received here, and would not consider moving anywhere else.
The Academy Health Club - Harrogate
Oakdale Place, The Academy, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 2LA
30-11-2008
The Academy membership is not cheap, but then again, what health club is?
It is a lovely place to go, but you would have to use it fairly often to get good value out of your membership.
The gym is very big and well equipped, and also has a mirrored studio, where there are lots of fabulous classes to take part in (including aerobics, yoga, dance etc). These often need to be pre-booked, but most (all?) are free to members! (They also offer some of these specifically for kids.)
There is also a decent size swimming area, with one main pool, a baby pool, a Jacuzzi and a steam room, which is lovely and really makes a change from a normal swimming pool! The changing rooms are communal (obviously separate for female and male) but are lovely, with lots of lockers (these require a £1 deposit, which you do get back), a playpen and nappy changing table for young children, and a hairdrying mirrored area. The changing rooms are next to the showers, which are individual cubicles with shampoo and conditioner provided. The Academy also provide the towels.
The restaurant is also good, with a good choice of food at decent prices, and a great kids menu,(and a play area outside).
The Academy also has a pamper/beauty section, which I have found to be very good, and ideal for a spa day, a children’s crèche with a large playarea that I believe can be hired for parties, a private function room for hire and both indoor and outdoor tennis courts.
So all in all, not cheap, but if you’ll use it definitely worth the value.
(Also, Daniel Craig has recently become a member, so you may catch a glimpse of him whilst you’re there!)
Café Rouge - Harrogate - Harrogate
21-29 Beulah Street, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1QH
29-11-2008
Generally, I have had very pleasant experiences here.
The food is beautiful, with some lovely fish and meat dishes on selection. As you may have guessed by the name, the cuisine is French based, and so includes lots of rich, flavour filled dishes, and some lovely French cheeses (the baked Camembert is particularly nice!) The restaurant is nicely decorated, and always seems to have a fab atmosphere, however busy (or not busy!) it is. The staff are friendly and helpful, and I have found that they are willing to offer their opinion on dishes, and recommend the best ones.
Definitely worth a visit, even if its just for a coffee/glass of wine and a baked Camembert! Mmm!
Pizza Express Restaurants - Harrogate
2 Albert Street, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1JG
29-11-2008
This is a lovely restaurant, although it does get very very busy in peak periods, so booking in advance may be recommended!
The pizzas are lovely, and as a previous poster mentioned, the doughballs are delicious!
There is a good childrens menu, which is very good value with has lots of choice, and has a lovely childrens cappuccino at the end, which is actually just hot milk with froth and chocolate dust, but really makes the kids feel special!
The staff are friendly and helpful, and the place usually has a lovely buzzy atmosphere, although it can feel slightly too loud at times.
The décor is lovely, and the walls are a gorgeous shade of blue!
Worth a visit, and a great one for the family!
Lemon Tree - Harrogate
3 Station Square, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1TB
29-11-2008
This small but charming gift shop is absolutely lovely, and definitely worth a visit, particularly if you’re searching for “that perfect gift”.
As the name suggests, the shop is a lovely pale yellow colour, with a (cream?) interior. The shop is very small, and does feel crowded when there are 2 or 3 other people in it, but it is well laid out and doesn’t feel clustered otherwise.
The shop sells a huge assortment of quirky unique gifts, with some lovely pieces of jewellery. All items are gift wrapped in pale yellow tissue paper, sealed with a Lemon Tree sticker and then placed in a Lemon Tree Bag, which makes a nice present, really nice!
Definitely worth a look!
Victoria Garden Shopping Centre - Harrogate
Victoria Shopping Centre, Station Parade, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1AE
29-11-2008
As the previous reviewer mentioned, the Victoria Shopping Centre is a lovely old building, that contains a fairly smallish, but nice selection of high street shops, with a huge TK Maxx on the top floor that should not be missed! Other shops in the centre include, La Senza, Julian Graves, New Look, WH Smith, H&M, Athena and the wonderful Cornish Pasty Shop. The centre is well laid out, with both escalators and lifts to move between the 4 floors (the top floor is purely TK Maxx, and the bottom floor New Look (and an external entrance to JJB).
All in all, worth a visit if you’re in the Harrogate area, the centre is centrally situated, and is near both the railway and bus stations.
Waitrose - Harrogate
87-93 Station Parade, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1HD
27-11-2008
This store is lovely to shop in. The store is well laid out and easy to find your way round. Even in busy shopping times the shop never feels cluttered, and there is always a quiet calm atmosphere (however, this may mean this isn’t the best place for a big shop with children.)
The food is fairly expensive, but on the whole is very good quality, and worth it when you want to “treat” yourself.
There are usually very good reductions on any short-dated food at the end of each day, definitely worth a look!
The staff are friendly and polite, and are helpful when you are looking for something.
Due to the cost, maybe not the best place to do your full supermarket shop, but a great place to get some lovely quality “extra items”
Boots The Chemists - Harrogate
33-37 Cambridge Street, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1RW
27-11-2008
This Boots is fairly small, but seems quite well stocked. However, because they have obviously tried to fit a lot in, the store does feel very clustered and the aisles are quite narrow, which can be a nightmare during the Christmas shopping period as you can imagine.
The store has a decent make-up section, although lacks some of the well-known brands (Benefit, Urban Decay,Estee Lauder) etc that are found in bigger stores. There is also a food section, although that too is very small. However, the meal deal works out as very good value when you need food on the go.
All in all, a good store and worth a visit, just try not to pick a busy shopping time, especially as big queues often build up.
