Its great to see all the staff in victorian costume and many of them are working on site such as candle making, baking, ironmongery etc. The great thing is you can buy and taste your way through the town as they sell what they make! We went to the pharmacy and got a nice big block of coal-tar soap! The old-school fish n chips also look amazing! Whichever shop or house you go into there's always a staff member wanting to talk to you about what they do (so be prepared for the chat!).
If you're a family there's a brilliant Victorian funfair with boat swings and chair-o-plane.
Be aware that if you go during the week you will be surrounded by noisy school kids. It's a brilliant place for a school trip but not peaceful of you're a couple or small family! This shouldn't affect your day but means you may have to come back to shops as they are packed full of kids.
Overall a brilliant day but I would probably want to go on a Saturday or Sunday to avoid the school trips.
sun inn - Eskbank

The sun inn brought sun into my life this week! We were recommended it by the staff at. “Adventure in the Meadow” and we were not let down. The food is divine and so beautifully presented. Even their pre-starter of bread, olives and tomato relish is SO good. I could have eaten tons of it as a main meal! My husband had beautifully cooked lamb and I had sons gorgeous duck. The staff were really friendly and helpful and the setting is so cosy. It’s a wee hidden gem that you might not come across in many circumstances but it’s worth the visit! Make it part of your journey! It’s not that cheap but I guess that reflect the quality of the food. Not budget average pub food – its worth paying a bit more for something a bit different.
The Counting House - Edinburgh
36 West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9DD

I highly recommend the counting house as a venue. It has character, space and great staff. My brother had his wedding there and it was fab. The grandness of the room gave the wedding such ambience. It was great for a ceilidh and didn’t mean you were dancing on a postage stamp like some hotels. They provided a great buffet and the staff were up for a laugh. It’s well priced to hire and I’d recommend it for any function.
They also hold “themed” evenings once a month and their vintage evenings are the best. I really enjoyed their 1940’s and 1950’s nights. The counting house is also ideally located for students as its right by the Edinburgh uni campus!
Tina O'Doherty's Inch Loss Clinic - Edinburgh
120-122 Thirlestane Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH9 1AS

I went here for 10 sessions through a groupon deal and I wouldn’t go back. There’s nothing special about it. You basically get electrical pulse pads put on you which contract your muscles to “tone” them. They also run a laser beam up and down you which is supposed to break fat cells. To be honest, I didn’t notice a difference. I ate healthily and followed their instructions. Some of the staff are more approachable than others but there’s a lot of cliche “are you up to anything this weekend?” stuff. Not worth the money. Either pay for surgery or do personal training sessions. This is only my opinion!
Word of Mouth - Edinburgh

There’s nothing nicer than a wee, cosy cafe with character and a good menu – you’ve found it. This family run cafe serves wonderful lunches of filled ciabattas, soup and mezze/tapas plates. I highly recommend their soups as they’re hearty and so tasty! The chips looked so tasty (wish I’d had them now) and seemed to be covered in herbs. The girls who were working when we were in were friendly – although there was a lot of yelling up and down the stairs to each other! Sick of Starbucks? Visit W.O.M!
Stag Espresso at Dovecot - Edinburgh
10 Infirmary Street, Edinburgh, Scotland
20-03-2012
This may be my new favourite place to lunch! The surroundings are so chilled out and it’s a wee hidden gem as you’d never know it was there unless you wander down Infirmary street. It’s much nicer than going to the Blackwell’s cafe. The staff are SO friendly and obviously care about the food they serve as the menu is so well chosen. I had leek, potato and haggis soup and I could have eaten another 4 bowls of it! My dad had some gorgeous carrot cake with lovely creamy icing. It’s all well priced and you don’t feel rushed at all. All I would ask for is more soup please!!
Flowers by Lindsey - Penicuik
14 High Street, Penicuik, Scotland EH26 8HW

I cannot recommend this florist more! She’s SO lovely and strives to give you the perfect experience. Lindsey did our wedding flowers and she turned our ideas into beautiful reality. Our Halloween wedding may have seemed a challenge but Lindsey rose (pardon the pun) to the occasion and delivered a beautiful array of lantern flowers and pumpkin arrangements. My bouquet was so beautiful I had to dry it and keep it. Her prices are very reasonable and will make any occasion perfect with the knowledge and skills she has.
Her shop is also beautiful and full if crafts, candles and gifts. You MUST go there at Christmas as she gets in stuff that’s beyond magical! I recommend her christmas candle arrangements! Situated in the centre of Penicuik it’s easily accessible. Go there now!
Lady JoJo's Boutique - Edinburgh
11 West Port, The Grassmarket, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2JA
14-11-2011
Jo Jo’s looks beautiful from outside and is in the ideal location. If you’re looking for Vivien of Holloway type dresses with full skirts and halters then that’s what you’ll get. It’s supposed to be ‘vintage style’ but there’s not much of a choice other than basic 50’s styles. There’s not much stock and it’s more ‘high fashion’ than cosy vintage boutique. It’s a bit faceless and you feel a bit awkward going in. There’s not many accessories, lingerie or styling and the prices are not for the faint hearted. For a cosy, varied, personalised vintage experience I always go to Miss Dixiebelle’s in Bruntsfield. They offer full styling from loads of eras and amazing corsetry!
