395 Pizzeria - Newcastle

Awesome little restaurant, this is the best pizzeria in the Bigg Market/Groat Market area. The pizzas were excellent, the house red was a very nice Puglian one and the service polite. I've walked past many times but never been in, but we had bought a Groupon so we tried them out. Very glad we did! We will be going back :-)

Barn Asia - Newcastle

Waterloo Square, Newcastle upon tyne NE1 4DN

10-02-2009 (updated on 08-06-2013)

It’s a simply STUNNING place, as all the other Barn series have been. Barn at the Biscuit Factory will remain my bench mark restaurant for all others after I went there a few years back. Truely one of the only places I have been where each mouthful elicited an involuntary moan of appreciation! It’s making it sound quite “sexual” but I couldn’t deny the almost orgasmic sensations I experienced.

Barnasia is equally as wonderous. A blend of many excellent asian tastes and flavours, it is a hidden gem in all senses of the word. The interior has some amazing artwork taken from local artists like Derek Hill, and pieces brought back from Vietnam and Korea. Check out the pictures in the ladies! They are all one person apparently.

The bar is well stocked, the cocktails fabulous and the staff friendly. The prices are right for the quality, so that’s a little higher than the average, but worth it.

Mark, who owns and runs Barnasia and is responsible for all the other “Barns” is suitably eccentric. He loves his Jazz and he loves his clientel. He can often be seen dancing in the seating area (which is a mix of intersting pieces of unusual furniture) on a weekend.

Hidden behind Westgate road near to Dance City’s new building, it opens onto a space with trees and sculpture, with lights and banners hanging from the modern facade.

If you are, like me, a taste nut, you will LOVE this place. If there is one place you SHOULD go if in the area it’s here.

I hope it doesn’t get too popular!

2013 – Now no longer called Barn Asia but called Electric East.

speshalkay I went back many times after I posted this original review, and I’m afraid it had gone rather downhill. Like others have said the staff were rude and made the experience bad. The food was ok.

Brilliant for fresh fruit, veg and herbs. High turnover of stock so it never sits for long. The clientele is very diverse and they cater for all. Opposite the shop they have another that sells in bulk, so if you want to make a batch of something, you can buy by the crate. Negotiating Stanhope Street is interesting because of this. Watch out for the fork lift in the middle of the road unloading wagons, and people crossing back and forth without looking. A cyclist takes their life in their hands!

Wonderful food, bring-your-own for beer etc and a shop next door if you want to get drink when you arrive.

Take the number 39 or 40 from Old Eldon Square and ask for the top of Stanhope Street.

I have been many times in the last 20 years, ever since it was formica tables, shiny floor tiles and plastic plants in the windows. The staff are lovely, the decor comfortable and light and now plenty of space.

I love it! And not just because it’s round the corner from me :-)

Now called Kamal – 2013

mossparkman bring your own beer? ...awesome!

The Bridge Inn - Castleford

Altofts Lane, Castleford, West Yorkshire WF10 5PZ

Mediocre at best. there is nothing nearby. The meal was ok but the service dreadful, they were all too busy chatting. The breakfast was worse as the one girl was struggling and I waited half an hour for scrambled egg on toast. Everyone else looked fed up too. I would try not to stay again.

Ramada Hotel & Suites - Coventry

The Butts, Earsldon, Coventry, West Midlands CV1 3GG

Pretty good. I walked from the station as it is a very tall building quite close by. They were very helpful and the room was nice with a big corner window as the pic shows. The evening meal was good, and the breakfast had loads of choice. There isn't much nearby, but there is a pub/restaurant next door. The reviews were not good so I stayed put.

K West Spa - West Kensington

Richmond Way, London W14 0AX

A very smart looking hotel in a suburban location. Unfortunately I wasn't there for an evening meal, but the breakfast was very nice. You get an option on a restaurant one or a quick one. The quick one is on the ground floor and the restaurant on floor one. It's reasonably close to the underground, although a bit fiddly to walk if you don't know the area. I would stay again though.

Nice people, terrible room. The food served for dinner was lovely, however sitting next to a room where a spin class was going on, complete with techno music was awful. Competing with the shouty step class in the room above my head it wasn't a pleasant experience. Imagine staying and eating at your local gym! The beds were tatty, the shower/toilet combo cramped and it leaked onto the bedroom carpet, which was just nasty. The gym was ok, and luckily I want to work out while I am here, but I would avoid next time.

La Gondola Restaurant - Kirkcaldy

435 High Street, Kirkcaldy, Scotland KY1 2SG

Ok, not great, but seems to be one of only a couple of restaurants and pubs in Kirkaldy these days. It seemed quite popular with the locals. It was a hideously windy night, and snow was all over the north east of England. Not here though.

La Maschera - Newcastle

Recently opened next to Tup Tup palace at the bottom of the Bigg Market, this is a not a bad little venue. The first restaurant that offers an all you can eat ITALIAN buffet, with pizza and 4 kinds of pasta for £4.95. We turned up at about 4 and plumped for jut that which was nice enough. They have no licence so no wine sadlyy, so we had coke. At the end, the bill said we had been charged 7.95 for each buffet as apparently the 4.95 one ends at 3pm. Well, it didn't say so anywhere and the waitresses hadn't said anything, so we were not happy. Up pops the owner and gives us back the difference! Well played sir!

Cheap for the buffet so i don't know about the normal menu. I have definitely tasted better, but will have to come back for that.
