    Formag Hardware

1pxt steffee last updated on 11-12-2008:

The hardware shop in Caernarfon is impressive. It spans three floors and sells almost everything (including the kitchen sink), and at great prices for a dedicated hardware shop. As you enter, you’re faced with seasonal specials - such as Christmas decorations at the moment, or one-off special offers. Then there’s a staircase upwards and one downwards. Upstairs is the real hardware - the tools of all kinds, car accessories, arts and crafts supplies, and pet accessories, which include a huge array of dog foods, treats, toys, bedding, medicines… and an assortment of other pets’ accessories, such as cat food and toys and even bird cages.

Downstairs is the household section, with a wide range of kitchen accessories and other homeware items, such as lamps, cushions, mirrors, and so on. Also on this floor is a door leading downstairs again to the painting and decorating area of the shop. Here there is every type of paint and varnish in a wide range of sizes. There isn’t any wallpaper but still a very good selection of home interior design products.

    Roberts & Owen

1pxt steffee last updated on 25-11-2008:

Roberts and Owen is a jewellers in Caernarfon city centre. Their brightly lit windows display almost their entire range of items, from their vast selection of watches, to their ladies’ jewellery items - bracelets, necklaces, rings, and a limited selection of mens’ items. They mostly stock 9 carat gold, but they do also have a few pieces in 18 carat gold or in silver. Sadly, they have little choice when it comes to picking out an item for a child, with only a few watches and a couple of silver Christening bangles. Despite this, their range is rather good for a small jeweller in a small city.

I recently purchased a nurse’s fob watch for my sister when she graduated as a nurse. It was competitively priced and the service in the store was good - they advised me that they did do engraving but that it would need to be sent away and would take a while, so I’d be better to use Timpson’s (on the same street) for my engraving. I thought that was rather impressive customer service, especially as many businesses are quick at grabbing business for themselves. I would purchase from them again should I need to buy a piece of jewellery without the time to travel to a bigger city for a wider selection.

  • Barnardo's - Caernarfon

    Barnardo's

1pxt steffee last updated on 25-11-2008:

As a book addict, I visit all of Caernarfon’s many charity shops on an almost daily basis. Barnardo’s is in Pool St in Caernarfon, which is the main shopping street in the city. It’s recognisable by its bright green and white decor and the huge posters the stores always have in their windows. They have one of the best selections of books of any of Caernarfon’s charity shops - with a bookcase devoted to paperbacks as well as one for hardback books, dvds, cds and videos, with a selection of board games underneath. For at least a year now, Barnardo’s have had an offer on their books - 3 for £2 - making it one of the most competitive of all the charity shops.

The store also has a wide selection of clothes (according to a poster on their window, all clothes items are £2 each), shoes, accessories and a good range of cards and other gift items.

    The Cornmill Shopping Centre, Darlington

    Primark

1pxt steffee last updated on 24-11-2008:

I’m not usually a fan of Primark, but the Darlington store is impressive. Darlington is an average-sized town, yet its Primark store is one of the biggest I’ve seen, and it stocks a lot of items that I’ve only previously seen in the Oxford St, London store, such as its skincare ranges.

The Primark store is now located in the Cornmill shopping centre, on the site of what once was, the C & A store, after moving from a location on the outskirts of town a few years ago. The Primark in Darlington is the first I’d ever heard of, a lot of years ago now, and before it ever became fashionable.

The windows of the store always look inviting, with lots of models, male and female, young and old, sporting Primark’s newest clothing ranges and accessories. At the entrance to the store there’s usually a couple of sales racks, which does make the store look a bit cheap, in my opinion, but the rest of the store is well looked after, with tidy racks and rails and no clothes/hangers cluttering up the floors. This store has an extensive underwear and nightwear section on the ground floor as well. Upstairs, the menswear, childrenswear and Homeware are all squeezed on to one floor, so their ranges aren’t quite as impressive as the women’s, but there’s still a decent level of stock, and it’s all clean and tidy there too.

This Primark does have a good selection of products that other Primarks I’ve visited don’t have - the aforementioned 'smellies’ and a gift section, with make-up sets and Christmas crackers.

  • The Works - Caernarfon

    The Works

1pxt steffee last updated on 24-11-2008:

The Works in Caernarfon is a small, but well-stocked store. This means that there’s not a lot of space in the shop, due to the placing of the tables, and items stacked on the floors near to the tables. I don’t think it would be accessible to wheelchair users. Having said that, the stock remains organised, with childrens’ books located together, at the front of the store, and other categories such as craft items, fiction and non-fiction, are all located together in areas of the store.

The Works has a good range of discounts, but I tend to find the books on offer in their stores aren’t really my cup of tea. Their range of fiction titles are quite limited. The childrens’ titles are brilliant, however, and they cater for all age ranges. They also stock a limited range of toys and games and a few dvd collections, which I assume cater to a range of interests and age groups.
