The Sekara Restaurant - Victoria

3 Lower Grosvenor Place, Victoria, London SW1W 0EJ

17-12-2008

Small and pretty unassuming Sri Lankan restaurant. Definitely worth a try if you fancy a change from Indian curry. The decor is a bit staid but staff friendly. There are letter of commendation from the Sri Lankan High commissioner and also “the friends of Sri Lanka society” on the wall. I think they are likely to know what’s what. £25 gave me 3 veggie dishes; 2 Sri Lanka style chapatti called godmabaroti and a nice Sri Lankan imported beer. Okra was okay but brinjal/ aubergine curry mind blowing. The biryani is popular but I didn’t have one…

The Quilon Restaurant & Bar - Westminster

41 Buckingham Gate, Westminster, London SW1E 6BS

17-12-2008

Intersteing rather than amazing restaurant for me. Unusual food like spiced tomato soup served in a wineglass; rather upsettingly warm/hot when I tried to glug my wine and picked up wrong glass. I would have to vote for the Cinnamon Club as better. Decor definitely old school Indian Restauarnt as compared to the nearby Cinammon club (*which is more modern). Some keralamn dishes that were different though

Sale Pepe Restaurant - Jesmond

115 St Georges Terrace, Newcastle upon tyne NE2 2DN

28-11-2008

Great little neighbourhood Italian restaurant.Always gently busy without being crazy. Ofetn some sort of celebartion group in…Limited waiting space (stand in hallway). Be careful parking as the Jesmond parking attendants work late! Offers earlybird suppers Mon-Thursday(maybe more but Im not sure). Potato skins esp nice here as starter.
Shared starter+Pizza + house wine for two about 15
Never had dessert here as full! Good service and nice house wine by the glass

Giraffe Restaurant - Kensington

7-11 Kensington High Street, London W8 5NP

28-11-2008

I like the chain as much as one can. It offers tasty and often healthy food. Almost always 2-3 good veggie options though the meat dishes are very good too. Smoothies or mocktails have always been nice. Definitely wide ranging cuisines on offer.
Inexpensive so not a bad choice mid week

zaika - Kensington

1 Kensington High Street, London W8 5SF

Am I being harsh; this is Michelin starred but really didnt hold uo to the Cinnamon club. Handy at far end of Kensington High street. Tasty enough food with lots of modern touches and there is a chance for a Gourmand wine menu alongside (different glass matched by the sommeleir to their menu.)
Overall though slightly disappointed comapred to Cinnamon club.

Havetolove - Newcastle

1-3 Hawthorn Road, Newcastle upon tyne NE3 4DE

23-11-2008

Something different in Newcastle suburbs. Stocks brand such as Bitton, Seven. Handbags and accessories include well known designers such as Alannah Hill, Anna Rita, John Galliano and Jenny Packham, as well as some of the freshest new labels including 18th Amendment, American Retro, Amuleti J and Diabless. Good range for Mrs but sadly no menswear. The owner is big on the Newcastle social scene so if you want some inside tips then this place is not bad to start with. Contribute to local charity fashion shows.

Lucy's On A Plate - Ambleside

Church Street, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 0BU

23-11-2008

One of the recommended places to eat in Ambleside. Extensive and somewhat bewilderingly large menu. Plenty to suit most palates including vegetarians. It can be busy so get there early or book

Drunken Duck Inn and Restaurant - Barngates

Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 0NG

This place is a treat .Although it might appear to be a country pub it really is a lot more. Hotel, microbrewery and bistro. I think it won Inn of the Year 2006. It is a quality place to stay; we stayed in the .
The food is not pretentious; it is a bistro restaurant in a country pub clothing; thats all. It also does pub sandwiches / pub lunches for the more caual diners.
We previously stayed in the extesion block which is lovely and quiet. When cheking in you get a lovely and free cream tea. We “took tea” by the pond inthe private /guests only garden and had the pleasure of meeting Kipper the hotel cat

Rasa - Newcastle

This is on the site where Asha Raval used to be The new place is Southern indian /Keralan.

Starters are dhosa (differet to usual Bangladeshi style “Indian”). I enjoyed the change but others used to tomato based curries preferred what they are used to elswhere.

For vegans this place must be a delight as meat free and dairy free dishes
