London school of economics - Holborn
Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE

Obviously a very good university with its pros and cons. I won’t go over them all but to me there were two major benefits:
1) The halls of residences are all great fun and spread out across the city. Each one has a unique feel generating much loyalty and devotion. Their disparate nature forces students to live a much more metropolitan existence than other campus-based places whist still affording the security and ease of friendship of a self contained hall. I’d recommend Rosebery hall given its fantastic Islington location and vibrant bar.
2) To me personally the best aspect has been its international reputation. Working in America on and off I find mentioning you attended LSE to be a real door-opener (yes, to my surprise most have heard of it!). Also, they seem to assume you took some form of economics when in reality geography or dare I say sociology may have been your major! This works with even at the very highest level. Extremely helpful when looking to impress.

This place is a real gem! Tucked away on Holborn it’s not unusual to see large queues tailing out onto the street. Service with a smile: very cheap and infinitely customizable sandwiches make a great lunch.
British Library of Political and Economic Science - Holborn

Heralded as the finest and largest social science library in the world this place always left me distinctly underwhelmed. The architecture seems to my untrained eye somewhat unoriginal and the much lauded spiral staircase in the centre is a real b*tch to walk up. The steps are placed at just such an interval forcing you to walk like you have a club foot or nautical peg-leg.
Due to its open nature and hard surface the noise really carries and it leads to quite a noisy atmosphere. Personally this doesn’t bother me but to some people this is a capital sin.
My main criticism is that the place is always totally packed. For whole months at a time you can’t find a seat for love or money. Students take to sleeping there overnight or at least 'saving’ their place with bags/papers etc. Very annoying. Also during the day it’s full of annoying undergrad kids chatting away pretending to be working. I have no problem with not doing any work, just do it properly at the pub!
Not open to the general public.
For my money, the King’s library just down the road is a far more atmospheric and relaxing place to work. All ULU students have free access.

Very average. Eaten here a couple of times, both times have been 'ok’ but nothing more. As other reviewers have said it’s a little more expensive than average and this isn’t really justified. But it does always seem to contain alot Japanese businessmen and they say this is a good sign…
There are much better Japanese places around.

Not really much to do with economics any more than other social science disciplines. Decent selection of academic works but more expensive than you’d find online. Helpful staff though.
On a completely unrelated note I once stole (in a drunken student haze) some of the lettering from the sign above the door. Not sure why I’m posting this.
Shakespeare's Head - Holborn

Not worth visiting. Huge place with low ceilings and numerous fruit machines. Usually busy in the evenings with students and the clocking-off crowd. Bad atmosphere in the whole place and rather unclean. In the day its only patrons are the homeless and LSE students, cough.
On the upside: beer is cheap. I once left my laptop here, returned an hour later and someone had handed it in (amazing given it’s a 'Spoons)! Also I once met a really interesting old WWII vet having a drink who regaled me with fun gory war stories etc. I think he’s usually there on Thursdays towards the rear entrance, someone check if he’s still around and buy him a drink!

Referred to by many of my friends as 'the posh 'Spoons’ this place is rather nice. Very secluded (behind the court of appeal) this is frequented mainly by legal admin from the the court and surrounding Inns of Court and LSE staff/students.
The exterior is extremely impressive and the interior is a very decent standard being spacious and imposingly atmospheric. The mezzanine upstairs is a nice place to sit and watch the world go by. The bar atmosphere is somewhat lacking due to the high ceiling and lack of music (I’m pretty sure 'Spoons save money by playing no music) and they show no sports (paid channels like Sky at least).
If you’re looking for a very cheap drink in the area this is the place to go. But, this is after all a Weatherspoons, if you can afford it go elsewhere.
George IV - Holborn
28 Portugal Street, Holborn, London WC2A 2HF

Decent if slightly run-down pub. Frequented more by LSE staff than students the George IV is a traditional little pub without much in the way of modernisation. Better than the 3 Tuns (main LSE bar) if you want a quiet drink and the certainty of not being accidentally urinated on, but without the same lively atmosphere.
Don’t bother unless you’re an LSE student.
LSE student bar - Holborn
Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE

Dreadful place unless you’re a student. The Three Tuns had an expensive renovation around 2005 but it hasn’t taken long to turn into quite a filthy and disgusting bar! If it weren’t for the weekend parties held there (Crush etc) it would be entirely reasonable, but at these parties everyone gets very enthusiastic and throws drink (snakebike mainly) all over the walls/ceiling/floor which even the finest £5 an hour cleaners can’t remove.
Avoid like the plague unless you’re an impoverished student and by God whatever you do…don’t go on a Friday/Saturday night!
Bierodrome - Holborn

An okay bar at best. I used to frequent this place regularly simply because of convenience. Firstly the beers are excellent, it’s pretty fun to have a friend pick the weirdest sounding beer for you to drink and working your way through the list; lots of choice and interesting glasses etc.
The food I’d characterise as over-priced and under-par. Snacks are fine (fried chorizo in particular) to wash down with the beer but anything else is beyond their capabilities.
Staff aren’t so friendly or knowledgeable (perhaps because of the heavy turn over).
Only choose this place if you like interesting beers.
