“I am hungry” said my visiting friend. It was 11:20pm on a Monday night so that meant kebab or Indian. Luckily there was no open fast food option and this Indian was located at the end of the street. Whilst telling us it was takeaway only because they are open until midnight, we managed to talk our way into getting a table. It wasn’t hard. The place was empty. We gratefully took a seat and ordered.
I want to be able to offer you a realistic expectation of this place so I wont mention that the food was served promptly because it should be if you are the only diners and the staff are keen to leave work on time. Instead lets concentrate on the food. The chicken tikka masala was OK but something was missing. A certain…kick of taste leaving me wanting another curry dish. The saag aloo was bitty to say the least. No clear consistency of spinach and the potatoes in the dish felt like they met some spice, but only on holiday. Rice was good, but slightly standard. As was the peshwari naan, which was above, average but I expect a certain standard to be met.
Finishing up before 12 midnight we were about to ask for the bill as dishes were taken away when we ceased to be the only customers or even the most important customer. For in walked Lembit Opik. “You know the Liberal Democrat MP who married a Cheeky girl?” I whispered to my friend forgetting she had been in the UK for all of 18 hours. It seems Lembik is a regular here, they were actually staying open late for him, brought him his order and drinks pronto and went well into he witching hour for Mr Opik MP and his aide.

A horse walked up the road almost on cue to the conversation being had and in the distance, although it could have been an old pub converted to someone’s home was a pub sign hung and lit. however, it was rather the other way around. This was a pub. It was open. Although it felt a bit like someone’s house that had been converted into a pub. The clientele were few in number but a talkative bunch and there was a lot of banter between them. It is the sort of pub in an estate that there used to be a lot of in the past, but so few of them now that people in their early 20s find it had to believe that they are really pubs.
Serving beers and lager including Guninness and McEwens. I went for the Scottish lager, because it is not often found in London pubs. The venue could probably hold around 6o people and seemed very homely. It is off the beaten track and whilst I would not travel miles to come here for a drink, I would recommend it. The staff were lovely and attentive. There is a fruit machine but I don’t think they show televised events like sports or have a quiz machine

Avoid this hole.
I had a terrifying experience in here a while back. A rather naive female friend of mine and I called in to ask directions to a friends new house. We ordered drinks and asked for the direction to our friend’s new street. The Irish guy in his mid 50’s behind the bar told me he didn’t know and walked off to the end of the bar where a few regulars were sat and went back to reading his newspaper.
We were early and enjoyed our drink, had a little laugh about a few things and chatted about people we knew. I went to use the toilet and was followed by one of the guys at the end of the bar. He asked me if I was English whilst I was washing my hands. I told him I was a Londoner and missed a comment under his breath. I returned to find my friend being spoken to by one of the other guys.
I took two steps away and asked for another two drinks. It turned out my friend was being asked for 'money for the cause’ and being white English but growing up in Barbados from the age of six months until then (around 20 years) she didnt realise this was for the IRA and began to give money. As I told her to stop, the older guy serving shouted 'right. You. Get out. Go on, F* off.”
So we left.
All of this was at about 5pm on a summer afternoon in broad daylight.
The great irony was that the friend’s whose house we were trying to find is Irish and lived in South London for well over a decade.

Top pub. I would call this THE top place to watch Germany in the European football finals. As part of my search to find London’s sixteen nations watching the games with people from their home countries I get a tip off about this place being the bees knees for watching with Germans. Dead right it was too. This old English community boozer, known as the Jolly gardeners is now Zeitghesit at the Jolly Gardeners. It has two bars separated by a bar and at the back is a small beer garden.
On each of the three visits I made during Euro 2008 I found it hard to get into the pub, thought it would be impossible to get to the bar, but someone made it each time. The selection of beautiful German beers and lagers is immense in this venue. Jever, Becks, Warsteiner, Holstein, Schneider weise and so many more. Their was no cover charge to watch games so that meant more money for beer.
Some are on draft, some in bottles, some in both. The staff whilst rushed off their feet, as excellent and always make sure they serve a beer like a German would expect it, but in a hurry. I would thoroughly recommend this place at anytime and have heard good things about the German food served at times when people are not spilling out into the street singing ‘Deucthsland, Deucthsland”

A friend of mine has stayed here on visits to London and tells me it is the best hostel in London. It has a welcoming reception that I have visited, with internet access computers, big screen TV, cans of beer available during licensing hours.
Apparently it has mixed and separate sex rooms. You can book online through hostel booking websites or direct and the direct site offers some beds for only a few pounds on low occupancy nights like Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. My friend got a bed on a Tuesday for £3 I think it was.
The location is great for London, epically the London Eye, Waterloo and Lambeth north tube station is about five minutes walk away. The staff seemed really friendly and helped my friend out in a pickle one time. I am sure I have been told this place is good because it really is.

Puoi prenotare online attraverso siti specializzati in ostelli.

This pub is a hidden gem for a number of reasons. They include that it is set back from the main street. It is open to the public but is actually the reception/living room bar of a hostel called Bright Inn Hostel. This means it has a few quirks. The first of these is that is doesn’t sell food so you are allowed to bring in your own or get some delivered. This means the air smells a little of pizza or kebab or chips. In addition, if you are a resident you can drink at the bar all night and all day. Yes. It is a 24 hour bar for residents of the hostel. There is a 10% discount on all drinks when you show your student card. On a Monday night it is £2 a drink between 8pm and midnight. At other times, it isn’t even wildly expensive by London standards to start with. Finally because of the international nature of the guests, it could be a good place to pick up!
So if you don’t stay or sleep here, why should you visit? Well, it is just like a normal pub. It has satellite sports on sky and setanta showing football, rugby or whatever is on. It has a darts board. It has a pool table, a beer garden too. The guy behind the bar on my visit could not be more chilled, most hostel receptionists are. At the steam engine, you have some real strange conversations going on and actually you could bag yourself a friend for life here, as long as you understand you have just been bagged as a tour guide.
