Tamar Otter and Wildlife Centre - North Petherwin
North Petherwin, Launceston, Cornwall PL15 8GW
16-09-2011
The main purpose of the centre is to rescue injured and abandoned young otters in the South West and rehabilitate them for eventual release back to the wild. In order to provide further attractions for visitors, other animals and birds are kept within the 22 acre grounds: Muntjac and Fallow Deer, Scottish Wildcats, Wallabies + various species of Owl, Birds of Prey, Geese and Ducks. Pheasants, Guinea Fowl and Peacocks also wander – keep an eye on your cake if eating at the Tea Room.
Best to visit around the middle of the day for the excellent Otter and Owl talks given by the staff – see website for precise times. The otters are most entertaining when they are fed and it is well worthwhile following the keeper and his bucket of fish around the various pens – these animals have very healthy appetites!
The wallabies and the deer wander around the woodlands but, since they are used to human visitors, it is possible to get fairly close without disturbing them. Have some concerns about some of the birds and animals being kept in cages but the underlying cause is worthy and I understand that they have plans to provide the birds of prey with more exercise (outside their cages) in future.
Strada - Cobham
13-15 Between Street, Cobham, Surrey KT11 1AA
29-06-2011
This is the local restaurant of choice at the moment for me.
I am not a huge fan of pasta or pizza and I would also admit to a bias towards independent restaurants. However, I do like Strada's Pesce (fish) and Carne (meat) dishes and the puddings too! Add to that a very good value lunchtime menu and the various discounts that can be found on-line from time to time and you end up with a restaurant that is well worthwhile visiting.
My personal experience of the service here is that it is extremely good (friendly and efficient) and beats other nearby establishments. If you are having a busy day and want a good quick meal, this is the place to go.
[I should add that much of my experience is from eating here at lunchtime although I have always found the restaurant to be pretty busy when I have visited.]
Polurrian Hotel - Mullion
Mullion, Helston, Cornwall TR12 7EN

The Pump Room - Bath
Stall Street, Bath BA1 1LZ

Somewhere to sit down and relax after visiting the Roman Baths. Service can be a little slow especially when busy. Try the water direct from the springs - I think you could best describe it as having a metallic taste. Not particularly pleasant but an improvement from 20 years ago.
The Roman Baths (Aqua Sulis) - Bath
Bath BA1 1LZ

Avoid the crowds, visit on a weekday in Winter! My visit last month was my second. The museum is constantly being updated and improved - some archaelogy is still taking place. I found the Roman Baths more impressive than expected - allow a couple of hours as there is quite a bit to see, and don't forget to taste the waters afterwards in the Pump Room (free).
One thing I did notice was that the smell of sulpher had pretty well disappeared. This was very noticeable during my visit 20 years ago especially near the site of the springs but also when I tasted the water in the pump room. Seems that the mineral content of the water has changed over the years.
Paradise House Hotel - Bath

Visited the B&B/Hotel just before Christmas. Well situated within 10 minutes walk of the town centre and avoiding the worst of the steep hills which surround the city. Despite the freezing temperatures outside the hotel was warm and inviting. Large spacious rooms with full central heating, many with views over the city. Spotlessly clean. Our hosts were friendly and efficient and the breakfast was excellent and included croissants, fresh fruit salad, toast with various spreads available and of course full english cooked breakfast. More expensive than some in the area but otherwise hard to fault. Would happily return if visiting Bath again.

Kinghams Restaurant - Shere
Gomshall Lane, Guildford, Surrey GU5 9HE
26-01-2010
Shere is one of the most attractive villages in Surrey with its old black and white wattle and daub buildings and stream running through the village centre. At one time in used to get a lot of passing trade as it was on the main route from London to Portsmouth. Nowadays more of a tourist trade especially in summer. The village and surrounding area has also been used as a film location - perhaps the best known of which was Four Weddings and a Funeral.
The restaurant is located in an 17th century building on the road leading towards Gomshall and is well worth a visit as it provides the best dining in the area. It is more expensive than average, but not overly so, and the food is always to a high standard. Attractive conventional furniture is in keeping with the age of the cottage but if you are over 5'10" watch out for low beams! Service is friendly and informal but it can feel a little cramped inside when busy.
The restaurant regularly features in the various food guides - overall I would rate this venue as 4 stars +
Jovial Sailor - Ripley
Portsmouth Road, Woking, Surrey GU23 6EZ

We lunched here recently on a weekday. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy so we were rather disappointed with the service received. The main meal arrived quickly enough but they then seemed to forget about us. After waiting for about 40 minutes, we managed to place our pudding order - Cheesecake with Winter Berries. This arrived after just a few minutes but there were no winter berries.
Reasonably good value food but, in my opinion, nothing special. The cheesecake was a bit too sweet and sickly - perhaps it would have been better if it was served with the berries?
Polmary Restaurant - Polperro
The Coombes, Polperro, Looe, Cornwall PL13 2RQ
17-08-2009
Attractive and friendly restaurant about half way down into Polperro from the car park.
Good range of seafood available. The crab bisque is an excellent starter. However, I believe the chef would benefit in buying a decent seafood cookbook. For example, the Seafood Paella had all the right ingredients and the helpings were generous - but the flavours weren’t there. It all seemed to have been cooked seperately and dumped on plated of Batchelors Savoury Rice. So disappointing as this is a great dish if preparely properly.
